Chapter 377: Chapter 377 His Choice, Beyond Words

After talking for so long, Qiqi’s first IV drip was over. Qiao Yu stood up to change the IV fluid for Qiqi but didn’t rush to sit down. Instead, he stood by Su Mu’s side, silently watching Qiqi with a smile always on his lips:

"On one hand is the grandmother who raised him since childhood, on the other is his wife and their closest kin. How could you ask him to choose? No matter the choice, it would be wrong—if he pushed you away, his grandmother could still live. But if he kept you, it might have led to both sides getting hurt. His choice wasn’t wrong, but it ultimately did wrong by you and your daughter."

After Qiao Yu finished speaking, Su Mu didn’t reply for a long time. She didn’t know what to respond after hearing the story. Was Fu Shinian great? Maybe in some ways, he was. But to Su Mu, it was all in the past, and that was his decision.

"I’m not telling you this in hopes of you forgiving Shinian. I only felt that you should know. Even if you can’t be spouses or lovers, or even friends, there shouldn’t be this kind of hostility between you."

Su Mu looked at Qiao Yu with a faint smile:

"Forgiveness is not the issue. The moment I signed the divorce papers, there was no relationship left between Fu Shinian and me. Even if what you’ve said is true, even if all he has done in these three years was for me and Qiqi, it was still his choice. I’m sure he anticipated the consequences. I’m grateful for what he’s done for me and Qiqi, but those words you said can’t erase the hurt that was inflicted. Things as they stand now, we’re even, I suppose."

Furthermore, throughout their two years of marriage, Fu Shinian always treated Su Mu as a potential organ donor—that’s what Su Mu truly couldn’t let go of. Even if everything Qiao Yu said was correct, even if Fu Shinian genuinely exhausted himself in his efforts to protect them, he could have chosen to speak up.

Su Mu wasn’t an irrational person. Although she had the desire to share hardships with him, faced with his grandmother, faced with her child, she would have respected Fu Shinian’s choice to leave temporarily. But he chose to say nothing and pushed her away in the most hurtful manner.

Since that was his choice, since he believed it was for the best, since he has persisted in this way for three years,

there was really nothing left for Su Mu to say.

Of course, Qiao Yu didn’t know what Su Mu was thinking. He couldn’t comment too much on her current attitude since Su Mu hadn’t done anything wrong. After all, it was just fate toying with them. He smiled slightly and thought of Wen Han, whom he had met by Su Mu’s side, and asked:

"Are you with Wen Han now?"

Su Mu didn’t hide it and nodded her head:

"Yes."

"Although it’s a bit surprising, congratulations to you."

"Thank you."

Qiao Yu smiled again, said nothing more, and after a few seconds of silence, he left. Perhaps the topics he broached were too shocking, and Su Mu didn’t remind him not to inform him about Qiqi’s illness before he left. By the time Su Mu thought of this, Qiao Yu was already gone from the room, and her reluctance to let Qiqi see Fu Shinian gradually faded.

Undeniably, Qiao Yu’s words had an effect. Even if Fu Shinian was never physically present for Qiqi, Su Mu believed that his love and protective nature for her hadn’t changed a bit. He wanted to be a good father, but life hadn’t given him that opportunity, hence the constant oversight.

If he comes, then so be it.

Not long after Qiao Yu left, Wen Han walked into the hospital room. Seeing Su Mu in a daze, he stood silently at the door for a few seconds, observing her silhouette. He couldn’t see her face, nor did he know what she was thinking at that moment—perhaps it was Qiqi, or perhaps... Qiqi’s father.

Wen Han was sure that Su Mu wasn’t thinking of him at that moment.

He cleared his throat to get Su Mu’s attention. She turned to look at Wen Han and gave a slight smile:

"Why did it take so long?"

Wen Han approached, placing breakfast on the nightstand beside Qiqi’s bed: "The morning crowd was large, so I drove to a place a bit farther away. Going there and back took some time."

Su Mu looked at the breakfast on the table and instinctively wanted to thank Wen Han. However, remembering their conversation from the day before, the ’thank you’ that reached her lips was again suppressed by herself, and she merely smiled slightly and started opening the breakfast:

"Have something to eat with me. After you finish, go home. I know you’re worried about Qiqi and me, but you should at least go back and change your clothes before coming back. After all, if you were to collapse now, I honestly wouldn’t know what to do."

This remark brought a slight smile to Wen Han’s face as he gently touched Su Mu’s cool cheek with his hand, smiling faintly:

"Don’t worry, I won’t collapse. I will protect you for this lifetime, and you won’t have the chance to protect me."

This statement should have been touching for anyone who heard it, but Su Mu furrowed her brow slightly:

"Wen Han, relationships should be equal. If it’s possible, I would want to protect you, too."

Wen Han just smiled and didn’t continue the conversation:

"Eat up before it gets cold."

After Su Mu finished her breakfast, Wen Han didn’t insist any further and went home to change clothes. Su Mu told him to rest well and not to come too early. Wen Han looked deeply into Su Mu’s eyes, and when she felt a bit puzzled, he nodded:

"Okay."

Before buying breakfast, Wen Han hadn’t planned to go home to change clothes. He even called the servants at home to send clothes to the hospital. But after getting breakfast, and after overhearing the conversation between Qiao Yu and Su Mu outside the room, he suddenly changed his mind.

Having heard their dialogue, he naturally understood Su Mu’s attitude. Although he knew that she had no thoughts of reconciliation and wasn’t planning to restart with Fu Shinian, Qiao Yu’s words would inevitably stir some ripples in Su Mu’s heart, even unrest. At this moment, Wen Han felt Su Mu probably didn’t want to face him.

Since Wen Han knew this, there was no reason to stay any longer, especially since he thought it wouldn’t be long before Fu Shinian would appear in this hospital room to see Qiqi. If he were also present, it would only make the situation more awkward for Su Mu. It would be better for him to leave early, even if just for the slight comfort in Su Mu’s heart.

Wen Han’s speculation wasn’t wrong. Not long after he left, Qiqi finished her last IV drip. Su Mu pressed the call button, and after a while, the door to the room opened. Thinking it was the nurse, she didn’t pay much attention until she heard a familiar and long-absent voice behind her:

"Susu."
