Chapter 374: Chapter 374: Shinian Misunderstanding, Overnight Stay
Su Mu could distinctly feel her heartbeat coming to a halt. But fortunately, Wen Han was just teasing her and didn’t really want to do anything. Seeing her freeze up, he retracted to a safe distance and then stood up from the sofa:
"Alright, no more teasing. I’m going to wash up."
Su Mu also stood up:
"I’ll get your toiletries for you. Tonight, Qiqi and I will sleep together. You can sleep in my room."
Su Mu was about to leave, but Wen Han stopped her:
"You go rest. It’s not my first time here, I know where things are. Don’t mind me. I’ll sleep in Xiaobei’s room tonight."
Before Su Mu could say anything, Wen Han had already turned and left. Watching his retreating figure, Su Mu let out a long sigh of relief.
Fu Shinian had been waiting downstairs, thinking he would see Wen Han come out. But an hour passed, then two, and Wen Han never left the apartment. It wasn’t until the lights in Jiang Bei’s apartment went out that Fu Shinian realized Wen Han must have stayed the night there.
He scoffed, feeling a momentary urge to go up and smash the door. But what would he do after that? At this time, Qiqi would surely be asleep. If something really had happened between Su Mu and Wen Han, it would be too late for him to intervene now. Besides, Su Mu would probably find him even more annoying, right?
Staring at the darkened window, Fu Shinian finished his cigarette, stamped it out underfoot, opened his car door, and drove off at high speed.
The weather had been fine during the day, but not long after Su Mu had fallen asleep, lightning and thunder began outside, and soon large raindrops were pelting the window, making a loud racket. Qiqi was terrified of such stormy weather; she would always wake up crying out for her. Su Mu also made it a point to sleep with Qiqi whenever it rained.
But today, Qiqi was strangely different. The thunder didn’t wake her up; instead, she continued to sleep heavily.
Su Mu got up and turned on the warm light by the bed, touched Qiqi’s forehead, and found that her previously reduced fever had returned, even hotter than before. She quickly got out of bed, grabbed a thermometer, and measured Qiqi’s temperature—nearly 39 degrees Celsius.
Not only the fever, but Su Mu also noticed that although Qiqi was deep asleep, she was not resting peacefully, her hands continuously scratching at something. Su Mu lifted Qiqi’s pajamas and saw many small red spots on her skin. Though not many, they were particularly noticeable against her fair complexion.
Su Mu could no longer care about anything else; she hurried to dress Qiqi, and in the midst of it, someone knocked on the door. She hastily bid them enter, and Wen Han stepped in to see Su Mu frantically dressing a sleeping Qiqi. He didn’t say anything extra but came forward to help and then saw the red spots on Qiqi’s neck.
Wen Han glanced at Su Mu with her reddening eyes and softly comforted:
"It’s probably just a rash, nothing serious. Don’t worry."
Su Mu nodded but said nothing. Wen Han understood that his words hadn’t really soothed her. After all, Qiqi was her life; any slight unease would send her into a state of panic.
Holding the child, with Wen Han holding the umbrella over them both, by the time they got to the car, Wen Han was almost completely soaked. Su Mu looked up at him with concern:
"Your clothes..."
"I’m fine."
Su Mu was silent for a few seconds before speaking:
"You come sit in the back with the child; I’ll drive."
"No need," Wen Han refused. "In this weather, it’s safer if I drive."
"Your leg isn’t suited for driving."
"Don’t worry, I won’t overestimate myself."
When they arrived at the hospital it was already past 2 a.m., and they found the emergency room overcrowded. Wen Han inquired and learned that it was due to a landslide on Mt. Xi caused by the heavy rain, smashing a tourist bus and sending many injured people here.
Su Mu was extremely anxious holding Qiqi, but there wasn’t a single free medical staff in the emergency room, filled instead with cries of pain. Wen Han looked at Su Mu and said:
"I’ll make a call."
But before Wen Han could make the call, Qiao Yu had already spotted Su Mu. He had been called back urgently to treat a few critically injured patients, and it was between patients that he noticed her. After giving a quick instruction to a nurse, he walked swiftly over:
"What’s wrong with Qiqi?"
Given the time and seeing Qiqi in Su Mu’s arms, Qiao Yu didn’t need to guess.
Not caring if Qiao Yu’s presence would let Fu Shinian find out about Qiqi’s situation, Su Mu had only one wish—that Qiqi would get better soon. She explained Qiqi’s condition to Qiao Yu. After examining the red spots on Qiqi, Qiao Yu slightly furrowed his brows:
"Don’t worry, I’ll call pediatrics, they’re not as busy."
"Thank you."
As Qiao Yu made the call, he glanced at Su Mu and smiled:
"Too formal, aren’t we? Qiqi is my niece after all."
After speaking briefly on the phone, Qiao Yu hung up and turned back to Su Mu: "Just go straight to pediatrics. I’ve already notified them. He’s the deputy chief of pediatrics, both skilled and ethical. You can trust him."
Su Mu thanked him and hurried with Qiqi toward the elevator. Qiao Yu watched her back, then glanced at Wen Han beside her. At this time, Wen Han’s presence could only prove that he and Su Mu were living together. Fu Shinian’s road...
Qiao Yu shook his head, dismissing thoughts he shouldn’t entertain, and quickly returned to his patients.
It was around 4 a.m. by the time Qiqi had been seen by the doctor and brought back to the ward. Wen Han had been by Su Mu’s side the whole night, sleepless. Watching Qiqi, who had been given an IV, sleep soundly, her hand no longer scratching itches, did Su Mu’s heart finally settle back into place. She sat down by the bed, holding Qiqi’s hand, her eyes unwavering as she watched her, as if the child might disappear the next moment if she didn’t keep her gaze fixed.
Wen Han comforted Su Mu with a few words. She responded, but Wen Han knew she hadn’t taken his words to heart:
"Is it that no matter what I say, you won’t leave Qiqi’s side at this time?"
Su Mu looked back at Wen Han, only then noticing that his clothes had nearly dried:
"Go back and change your clothes, will you? You just got out of the hospital not too long ago and your body is still recovering. Don’t fall ill again."
Wen Han smiled faintly: "You don’t need to worry about me. With the state you’re in, I dare not collapse."
