Chapter 357: Chapter 357: Holding Hands, Wrong Timing

The old lady’s ability to leave the old mansion was indeed a good thing for Fu Shinian. He smiled slightly:

"Good, then I’ll go and live somewhere else with you. I believe you will definitely like it."

The old lady nodded:

"I will, I like whatever you like."

Although Fu Shinian had a plan in mind regarding Auntie Wang’s matter, he still discussed it with his grandmother. After all, Auntie Wang had been with the old lady the longest and the grandmother was the first victim, so she had the most say:

"Grandma, I’m thinking of sending Auntie Wang back to her hometown. The Fu family won’t use her services anymore, and we won’t pursue the things she did to you. What do you think?"

The old lady was silent for a few seconds before she smiled slightly:

"Let it be, let her stay by my side and take care of me."

"Grandma..."

"I still trust her, and I guess she was forced by some other matters. She has given half of her life to our family. I ought to take care of her. We often feel that we have treated them like family, thinking they could talk to us about any problems or difficulties they might encounter. But if we really acted as we thought, would your Auntie Wang have colluded with Shi Lihua?"

Fu Shinian opened his mouth but didn’t speak, for he agreed with his grandmother’s words.

"It’s also that we, the heads of the family, haven’t shown enough concern for her. Even if she was too shy to speak up, there would’ve been differences in her usual manner when she faced difficulties. Did anyone notice? No one did, so she took such a step. Of course, it wasn’t right, but it isn’t a deathly offense, especially since she has taken care of things for 40 years, and I don’t have many years left either. I’m afraid I’d not be able to adapt to someone new."

"And what about Auntie Lin?"

"She knows your temperament the best, but she can’t work for me," the old lady said, settling the matter, "Once we move to the new place, let her come back. I’ll have a good talk with her. Don’t worry, she won’t do such a thing again. If I didn’t understand her well enough, I wouldn’t be so lenient."

After leaving the old lady’s current residence, Fu Shinian didn’t immediately get into the car. He leaned against the car and quietly lit a cigarette. Qiao Yu didn’t smoke, but at that moment he strangely craved for a cigarette and walked up to Fu Shinian, extending his hand:

"Give me one too."

Fu Shinian looked at him as if looking at a strange creature:

"When did you learn to smoke?"

"I haven’t, I just want to smoke today."

Fu Shinian was silent for a few seconds, but still took a cigarette out of the pack from his pocket and handed it to him, then passed him the lighter. Fu Shinian watched Qiao Yu, whose actions revealed his unfamiliarity; his previous words were devoid of any deceit, he really couldn’t smoke.

As the taste of nicotine entered his mouth, Qiao Yu coughed violently, and Fu Shinian watched indifferently, suddenly recalling how Su Mu looked when she first smoked. At that time, she had taken an interest in cigarettes just after they made love, not even bothering to clean up as he would typically do, but lighting a post-coital cigarette instead.

But the first puff she took was just like Qiao Yu’s reaction now.

Now, though? The last time he saw her, she had already become adept at smoking. He wondered what kind of experiences she had gone through over the years to endure the discomfort nicotine brought her.

As Qiao Yu calmed down, Fu Shinian spoke:

"Don’t overdo it, if you can’t smoke, don’t. Friends aren’t dead; you can talk to me about anything unhappy or unsmooth in your life."

"You?" Qiao Yu chuckled lightly: "It would be good enough for you to handle your own affairs without causing me trouble."

Fu Shinian slightly curled his lips: "It will be okay."

"I think the old lady’s words weren’t wrong, things between you and Su Mu might not go as you expect."

"I know," Fu Shinian’s voice deepened: "But it’s tough, isn’t it? I can’t just watch and do nothing."

Qiao Yu stayed silent, then, almost masochistically, took a couple of harsh drags on the cigarette. Fu Shinian, seeing something was amiss, asked:

"What’s really going on with you today?"

Qiao Yu shook his head, ultimately not saying anything. Finally, he irresponsibly threw the unsmoked cigarette butt on the ground, crushed it with his foot, then turned and waved his hand, got into the car, and left. Fu Shinian thought to call out, but he didn’t, because he knew well that Qiao Yu was used to keeping things to himself; even if he had stopped him now, he wouldn’t have opened up if he didn’t want to talk.

Fu Shinian stood motionless and finished his cigarette, then bent down to pick up the cigarette butt Qiao Yu had thrown on the ground, walked to a nearby trash can, and after throwing both cigarette butts away, he drove off.

Driving around, Fu Shinian arrived at the hospital.

Upon reaching the top floor, he naturally went to Su Mu’s room first. Qiao Yu said Su Mu had awakened, so there was a lot they needed to discuss. Despite having been through so much today and not having rested for 48 consecutive hours, the sense of relief that comes with resolution didn’t make him feel the least bit sleepy.

But Su Mu’s room was empty, no sign of her inside.

Could she have gone home?

As Fu Shinian stood at the doorway looking at the empty hospital bed, he came upon this thought. After all, she hadn’t seen Qiqi for two days and must have been eager to see her daughter upon waking up. Thinking of the adorable child, Fu Shinian couldn’t help but smile, taking steps towards the staircase, preparing to go back and rest, when he suddenly thought of Wen Han.

There actually wasn’t much to discuss between him and Wen Han, but given their future interactions concerning Su Mu, and since he had gotten injured for her again, he felt he should check on him. What Fu Shinian didn’t expect was that the moment he pushed open the hospital room door, he would see Su Mu’s figure, and even more unexpectedly, the entwined hands of the two.

Honestly, the feeling was really terrible.

It was like something you’ve always liked suddenly wasn’t yours anymore.

Su Mu and Wen Han were both startled to see Fu Shinian suddenly appearing at the door, so much so that they completely forgot the current state between them, their hands remaining linked. Fu Shinian watched the two for a few seconds, then slowly tugged at the corners of his mouth. The next second, Fu Shinian’s cold voice slowly reached their ears:

"Is this a bad time?"
