Chapter 352: Lying for the Sake of Dignity
Chapter 352: Chapter 352: Lying for the Sake of Dignity
"We’re really well-suited for each other."
Even without emotional entanglements, they were the most suitable partners; no one could deny that, not even Su Mu herself.
Jiang Bei nodded, "That’s true, and you don’t need to feel unfair to Wen Han because of that. I believe that even if you don’t end up liking him, he would still want to spend his life with you."
"Maybe there will be a perfect ending after all."
With nothing left to say after this, Jiang Bei was also happy, after all, she could witness the love between her best friend and her brother.
Not wanting to continue this topic, Jiang Bei inquired about the recent kidnapping of Su Mu. Trying to avoid worrying her, Su Mu downplayed the severity, speaking lightly and casually about it. Just as Jiang Bei was about to share her thoughts, a group of people entered the room. Jiang Bei lifted her eyes inadvertently, and with just a glance, her gaze fixed on the spot, unmoving.
Su Mu noticed something was off and followed Jiang Bei’s gaze, only to see Rong Shen, whom they hadn’t seen for a long time.
Always in an environment full of surprises, Rong Shen was sensitive at all times. Sensing the gaze, he turned his head and inadvertently, his eyes met with Jiang Bei’s.
How long had it been?
That was the first thought that crossed Rong Shen’s mind upon seeing Jiang Bei. How long had they not seen each other?
It seemed they hadn’t met since their breakup that year, despite being in the same city, and occasionally hearing news about her. Whether by intention or indifference, it seemed as if their fate had been cut off.
In this not too big, not too small city, it was their first encounter in over a year.
Jiang Bei was the first to react, awkwardly averted her gaze. Su Mu had never seen Jiang Bei like this and was worried for her, but before she could say anything, Jiang Bei quickly got up from her seat and hastened to the restroom. Su Mu knew she was avoiding the situation, and she couldn’t stop her.
Because she was just a bystander, never knowing what had happened between them.
Su Mu wanted to stay with her, but seeing Jiang Bei’s state, it seemed she didn’t want Su Mu to witness it. Worried, yet she remained seated waiting. She assumed that once Jiang Bei left, Rong Shen wouldn’t stay long either, but unexpectedly, after greeting the people behind him, he walked over to Su Mu and even took Jiang Bei’s previous seat.
He looked at Su Mu, a polite smile on his face:
"Long time no see."
Su Mu also smiled faintly, "Indeed, it’s been a long time."
Rong Shen was silent for a few seconds, his gaze slightly lowered, observing the utensils in front of Jiang Bei. The reason she had been drinking left a faint lipstick mark on the cup, pink and plump, which made Rong Shen involuntarily think of scenes when he was with Jiang Bei over a year ago. Back then, he was infatuated with everything about her.
But such infatuation had brutally separated them for more than a year.
Su Mu could feel that Rong Shen still had feelings for Jiang Bei, but even then, feelings should have ended by now. After all, Jiang Bei was already married and had a child; there was no possibility between them anymore.
Rong Shen’s feelings were somewhat inappropriate. As Su Mu was about to say something, Rong Shen pulled himself out of his memories first. He recovered his initial demeanor in an instant, looking at Su Mu with a light smile:
"I heard you recently did a bridal photoshoot for Fu Shinian?"
Su Mu frowned slightly:
"How do you know?"
"There’s nothing I can’t find out if I choose to," Rong Shen glanced in the direction where Jiang Bei had left, "What, have you decided to reconcile with Fu Shinian?"
"Not really..."
"If you can reconcile, don’t drag it out any longer," Rong Shen looked at Su Mu. "Three years ago, Fu Shinian was wrong to let you go, but it seemed he had no better option at the time. Moreover, he almost died for you, staying in the hospital for months. Based on that sentiment alone, not everyone would manage to do that."
Rong Shen’s words momentarily stunned Su Mu. She looked at him and then spoke after a moment:
"Mr. Rong, might there be some misunderstanding? We haven’t reconciled, and he hasn’t almost died for me. All along, he suspected that I was carrying someone else’s child. As for the hospitalization you mentioned, it surely wasn’t because of me, right? Are you sure it wasn’t because of the old lady’s health?"
Apparently, Rong Shen had not expected that the relationship between Su Mu and Fu Shinian was still at a standstill. Hearing Su Mu’s words, he paused for a few seconds and then chuckled lightly:
"He hasn’t told you? Maybe I should."
Su Mu wanted to stop him, but Rong Shen seemed in a bad mood and wouldn’t let anyone in his presence feel otherwise. Ignoring Su Mu’s protest, he spoke out:
"Three years ago, when you were kidnapped, Fu Shinian prepared 300 million for your ransom, transferring 250 million to the designated account, and 50 million in cash to be brought to the scene of the kidnapping, handed over to the kidnappers personally."
"Personally?" Su Mu laughed faintly, "Mr. Rong, three years ago Fu Shinian didn’t come to save me; he chose the old lady instead."
"That’s the outcome he wanted you to believe, naturally you would think so, otherwise all his efforts would be in vain." Seeing Su Mu’s puzzled expression, Rong Shen smiled slightly, "Fu Shinian didn’t choose the old lady because he said he wasn’t a doctor, and staying wouldn’t be of any help to her, but you were the one who needed him the most. That’s why he took the 50 million in cash to the kidnapping site, and in the process of saving you, got shot twice."
Su Mu’s heart skipped a beat at Rong Shen’s words. Logic told her this couldn’t be possible, he had no reason to do such a thing. Yet on the other hand, she couldn’t control the desire to find the truth. If it was true, why did he do it? Why did he not even say that he saved her? What was he afraid of?
Rong Shen observed her for a few seconds:
"It seems you barely believe it?"
"Believe it or not, it doesn’t really matter," Su Mu spoke indifferently. "Even if what you’re saying is true, it may not have been for me. After all, when he later found out I was pregnant and suspected the child wasn’t his, maybe he thought telling me about the gunshot would make him feel sadder. After all, he’s so proud, how could he allow his sacrifices to be for naught?"
To protect his so-called dignity, saying he chose the old lady seemed plausible, something that Fu Shinian would do.
Su Mu’s explanation provoked a light chuckle from Rong Shen:
"Such a reason, I’m afraid only you would believe."
