Chapter 348: Chapter 348: By Your Side, I Feel at Ease
Wen Han hadn’t slept. Regardless of whether he was injured or in the military, his biological clock had formed over 15 years ago, and it seemed that he didn’t need much sleep. Although his leg injury kept him from walking around, he could still move his upper body freely. He had somehow found a dumbbell and was exercising his arms.
Hearing the door open, he looked up, but was surprised to see Su Mu. He briefly showed a look of astonishment, then broke into a radiant smile,
"Awake?"
Su Mu walked over and lifted his blanket to check on his injured leg,
"You should be resting if you’re hurt. Why can’t you sit still?"
Wen Han smiled and casually placed the dumbbell on the bedside table next to him, "I’m used to it. If you ask me to sit idle, I really wouldn’t know what to do."
"Is the injury severe?"
"No worries. Getting injured while in the military is common. Don’t worry about me."
Su Mu didn’t ask Qiao Yu how Wen Han was injured, but she knew that for such a tough guy to be hospitalized, the injury wasn’t minor. She didn’t question Wen Han, as he probably wouldn’t say anything to avoid her worrying. He had always been like that, rarely considering himself, but always meticulously caring for her.
"Don’t just stand there. You’ve slept so long, you might not be used to moving around much. Sit down first." Su Mu took a seat on the chair nearby while looking at him guiltily. Wen Han offered a resigned smile, "What I fear most is seeing you look at me like that, Su Mu. Don’t feel any pressure. I’m a soldier, a public servant of the state. Even if it were a stranger who was in trouble today, I would have done the same."
Su Mu nodded,
"I know, and I believe you. But the one you saved wasn’t a stranger, it was me."
"It wasn’t just me who saved you."
Su Mu looked at him, unsurprised by her guess, "Wei Shaoqin went too, didn’t he?"
"Yes." Wen Han smiled. "I’ve never seen him so anxious. But after Qiao Yu confirmed you were fine, I haven’t seen him since, and I don’t know where he went."
Su Mu smiled and didn’t speak. The debt she owed Wei Shaoqin, she doubted she could ever repay.
"Actually, besides me and Wei Shaoqin, one other person went to the lab."
This time, Su Mu truly couldn’t guess who it might be. The name Fu Shinian fleetingly crossed her mind, but thinking it over, it seemed unlikely. Who else could it be though?
"It was Lin Ning."
"Lin Ning?"
"Yes." Wen Han looked at her, "She has been by your side for over two years now, haven’t you ever suspected anything?"
Su Mu shook her head, "She was hired, and initially didn’t know much about photography. I wasn’t planning to hire her, but she was really hardworking and interested in photography, so I made an exception. Over the two years, she really did concentrate on learning. I never found anything suspicious about her. Could she have gone to the lab just because she was worried about me?"
"No, we knew you were there because Su Shiyue called Wei Shaoqin to inform him of the address. I also had my colleagues at the bureau investigating, but Lin Ning seemed to have headed directly to the scene. If no one had been following you, someone must have told her the address."
Wen Han didn’t say who this person was, but he believed Su Mu must have had her suspicions. He smiled slightly, "Don’t think too much about it. She has been by your side for so long without doing anything to harm you; she probably just wanted to protect you."
Protect?
How laughable.
Wen Han raised his hand to ruffle Su Mu’s hair, but regretfully, the distance was too far and he couldn’t reach. Just as he was about to retract his hand, Su Mu snapped out of her thoughts, saw his motion, smiled slightly, and leaned her head forward, allowing it to touch his hand.
He was startled, then laughed, and touched her hair for a few seconds before withdrawing,
"Only my mother knows about my injury. Xiaoyuan and Qiqi are unaware. You should go back and take care of them first. Also, take some time to rest. Someone will come here soon, so don’t worry."
"If it’s alright with you, I would like Qiqi to stay with the Wen family temporarily while you’re in the hospital, and I’ll take care of you."
Wen Han smiled at Su Mu’s words, yet he didn’t agree,
"I know you would take very good care of me, even better than any nurse. But, Su Mu, I can’t bear it. I just want you to be alright. Even though Qiao Yu said there’s no virus in your body, you were still injected with something else. Just to be safe, it’s better to be cautious."
Ever since she woke up, Su Mu had completely forgotten about Xu Yansu injecting her with something. Her mind was filled only with thoughts of Wen Han. Now that Wen Han mentioned it, she suddenly remembered, though she was still quite surprised and deeply skeptical about its truth,
"Are you saying there’s no virus in my body?"
"Yes, that’s what Qiao Yu said. I don’t think he has any reason to lie to me."
Su Mu fell silent for a few seconds, pondering the words Xu Yansu had said to her in the lab. Logically, Xu Yansu had no reason to spare her, and the injection had indeed penetrated her flesh. She didn’t understand whether Xu Yansu had intended to spare her from the beginning, or if this was just the start.
She didn’t dwell on this question further, because no matter how much she agonized over it, she wouldn’t get a definitive answer. She just looked at Wen Han and smiled faintly,
"If I really do need to be cautious, don’t you think I should stay in the hospital? That way, if something happens, I can receive treatment more quickly."
That was a twisted logic, but Wen Han found no words to refute it. He opened his mouth to try to persuade her further, but Su Mu cut him off,
"Does what I’m saying not make sense?"
"It’s not for you to say." Wen Han was rather helpless, but seeing Su Mu’s determination, he eventually had no choice but to compromise, "If you want to stay, stay. After all we’ve been through, only having you by my side makes me truly feel at ease."
Su Mu also looked at him seriously,
"I only feel at peace when I’m by your side."
Her words made Wen Han pause for a moment, but he quickly recovered and didn’t delve into it further. Whether for better or worse, it was enough for him.
But Su Mu didn’t see it that way. After she spoke, she waited for Wen Han to ask what she meant, but he didn’t. He just kept looking at her with a satisfied smile, seemingly uninterested in pursuing the conversation. That content smile filled Su Mu’s heart with both resignation and fulfilment.
Finally, she asked,
"Don’t you want to talk about anything?"
Wen Han shook his head, "I have nothing to say."
Just quietly watching you is enough, and I’m already satisfied.
"I do."
Wen Han looked at her for a few seconds, then nodded, "You talk, I’m listening."
