Chapter 33: Chapter 33 No Longer Compromising Myself for You
When Auntie Lin was about to leave, Su Mu asked a question that had puzzled her for a long time:
"Where is the lady now?"
Since her marriage into the Fu family, she only knew that the grandfather and father had passed away, and that only the grandmother and the Fu Shinian siblings remained. However, nobody had ever mentioned Fu Shinian’s mother to her. The grandmother didn’t speak of it, and she dared not ask Fu Shinian either.
Auntie Lin did not expect Su Mu to ask this question and was startled for a moment. She clearly did not want to discuss it and was about to leave with the medicine box in her hand.
Seeing this, Su Mu did not press her further. This was probably a taboo, and the less people knew, the more it would protect Fu Shinian from being hurt. She understood that.
Looking at the wounds on her feet, although they were still very red, the ointment made them cool and much less painful than before. As she was about to get up and go upstairs, she realized Auntie Lin had not left and smiled:
"Auntie Lin, it’s getting late. You should go rest as well."
"Mrs. Fu," Auntie Lin hesitated, "please don’t mention the matter of the lady to Mr. Fu. He does not like to hear about it."
"I understand."
"Ah..." Auntie Lin sighed, "On the day the old master passed away, the lady left, taking a good amount of money with her, forcing Mr. Fu to gather his spirits amidst the sorrow of losing his father to stabilize the company’s turmoil. That woman truly had no sentiment, and as to where she went, the old lady didn’t want to look for her, and Mr. Fu acted as if she never existed. So gradually, people stopped talking about it. Bringing it up would only hurt."
After a few seconds of silence, Su Mu nodded, "I understand. Thank you, Auntie Lin."
As Su Mu was going upstairs, she paused at the staircase, looking toward the direction of the master bedroom. She thought for a long while and decided to go over there. Standing at the door, she anticipated what Fu Shinian’s reaction to her presence might be, but the story Auntie Lin had just shared made it hard for her not to consider Fu Shinian’s feelings.
With a light sigh, she still knocked on the door. After a few seconds with no response, she turned the handle and entered.
Fu Shinian had not gone to bed yet; he appeared to have just showered, with his hair slightly damp. He was sitting on the bed reading a book and swept a cold glance at her as she entered:
"Get out!"
Su Mu did not heed his words and went straight to the bathroom. She took out a hairdryer from the cabinet, plugged it into the outlet next to Fu Shinian, and was about to dry his hair when he stopped her and asked with a cold laugh:
"What are you doing?"
Su Mu looked at him:
"If your hair is not dry, it can cause headaches while sleeping. I’ll dry it for you."
"No need," Fu Shinian refused, "You’d be better off thinking about how to please your little white face."
Su Mu realized that her words had hurt him, although unintentionally, but such accidental pain could still wound deeply. She could not ignore it:
"I’m sorry, I should not have said those words. It won’t happen again. You know that I would never do such a thing."
"Sorry?" Fu Shinian chuckled lightly, "Has Mrs. Fu done anything wrong? It’s just about learning to keep a lover, just like I do. Fair enough. What do you have to be sorry for?"
Su Mu looked at him:
"I know you wouldn’t do that."
"Not sleep with another woman? Only someone utterly foolish would have such confidence in a man! Have you grown that naive? Su Mu, what makes you think I would repress my desires for you?"
Su Mu did not want to continue this topic; she had not yet recovered from the previous incident and could not imagine what would happen if the conversation went on. So, she shut her mouth, wanting to dry his hair, but before she could even turn on the switch, he had already yanked out the cord and thrown the hairdryer to the ground:
"Did you not understand what I said? Get out!"
Su Mu was startled, not expecting him to suddenly lash out so angrily. She was there to apologize, in a soft tone, with a gentle attitude, trying her best to make him feel her sincerity and to soothe the wounds in his heart, but it seemed to have an even worse effect than she had expected.
However, Su Mu understood that though she tried to empathize with Fu Shinian, she could never fully understand his feelings. The scar from his biological mother would probably never heal.
Coming back to her senses, Su Mu bent down to pick up the broken hairdryer and threw it into the nearby trash can. She noticed a brand new pocket square in the bin, which, if she wasn’t mistaken, was the one he had brought back earlier. She looked back at him once more and left the room.
Fu Shinian watched her retreat, especially noticing her bare and inflamed feet, his brows furrowed, but he ultimately did not speak out.
...
Su Mu had not rested yet, and the effect of the ointment was wearing off. The burning pain was creeping into her nerves, making her restless and unable to sleep. Finally, she got up and took out her laptop.
She needed to find a new job. Although she was not sure if Wei Shaoqin would continue to cause trouble, she could not just sit back and starve to death, let alone that it was almost time to pay her mother’s nursing home fees. She certainly couldn’t borrow more from Jiang Bei.
After submitting a few resumes, Su Mu was ready to exit the recruitment website when she inadvertently saw a job posting for a psychologist.
Of course, she didn’t have the qualifications for that role, but the phrase ’psychologist’ made Su Mu reflect on herself. In fact, Fu Shinian wasn’t wrong—her body did have issues. Her lack of interest and response to intimate matters had caused great trouble not only for Fu Shinian but also for herself.
She had always been reluctant to face it, simply because she didn’t want to confront that dark past. But it seemed that letting things slide wasn’t going to work out well.
While muddling through her thoughts, she didn’t know what time she fell asleep. When she woke up, it was already broad daylight, and it was nearly 9 o’clock. Su Mu couldn’t help but sigh; her recent sleep schedule was becoming more and more irregular.
After a simple breakfast, Su Mu left the house. She went to the hospital to look for Jiang Bei.
However, her timing was bad. A kindergarten had a food poisoning incident, and the children were all sent to the emergency department. Jiang Bei was so busy he didn’t have a moment’s rest, and Su Mu didn’t want to disturb him, so she decided to wait in the small garden nearby. But just as she was walking through the emergency lobby, she saw a 4 or 5-year-old boy standing lost in the bustling crowd, searching around.
The parents around were anxious, and the medical staff were running back and forth without noticing him. Worried that he might get bumped into, Su Mu walked over and crouched next to him:
"Little brother, have you been separated from your family?"
He was a very handsome boy, with thick eyebrows and big eyes, and his fair skin and clothing suggested a well-off family background. His perplexed gaze settled on Su Mu’s face, and he eventually nodded slightly:
"I came to the hospital with my grandma, and now I can’t find her."
Su Mu took his hand: "I’ll accompany you to the triage desk over there and ask the nurse sister to announce it for you, okay?"
The little boy smiled and nodded:
"Thank you, sister."
After the announcement, Su Mu stood with the little boy for a while. As new patients arrived, she led the little boy to the waiting area nearby.
Through conversation, Su Mu learned that the little boy’s name was Wen Shaoyuan; he was 5 years old and attended kindergarten. Since it was the weekend, his grandmother had taken him to visit a friend in the hospital. He felt stifled in the ward and wanted to go to the emergency department to find his aunt to play with. However, before he could speak to her, the emergency department received the children with food poisoning, and his aunt had no time to look after him. He got lost in the crowd while pushing through.
Su Mu could tell that the little boy, Wen Shaoyuan, didn’t guard against her at all. Although she was happy to be trusted, it didn’t seem safe for the child:
"Shaoyuan, to you, I’m just a stranger. You don’t need to share so much about yourself. What if I were a bad person?"
"Sister, I don’t just trust anybody, but you’re someone I felt close to at first sight."
After a while, Wen Shaoyuan seemed a bit sleepy. He yawned gracefully, and Su Mu picked him up and sat him on her lap to make him more comfortable: "If you’re tired, sleep for a bit."
"Sister, you smell so good..."
Wen Shaoyuan had only just fallen asleep when Su Mu saw two women hurry over to the triage desk, anxiously asking questions. Only after a nurse pointed in their direction did they rush over. Seeing Wen Shaoyuan already asleep in Su Mu’s arms, both women let out sighs of relief.
One of the women, dressed in a classically elegant style and exuding grace, smiled warmly at Su Mu:
"Thank you for taking care of Shaoyuan."
Su Mu smiled back: "Not at all. He’s well-behaved, a sensible child."
After handing the child safely to his family, Su Mu rejected their offer for a reward. The idea of asking Jiang Bei to introduce her to a psychologist began to seem absurd, and she left the emergency department to go directly back to Bishui Yuntian.
...
The day of Qin Nianwan’s finals arrived in a blink of an eye. Su Shiyue came to Bishui Yuntian early in the day. She didn’t need to, as Fu Shinian would pick her up, but she didn’t want to miss any chance to upset Su Mu, especially with Qin Nianwan, whom she was particularly fond of. The thought of Su Mu’s expression upon hearing the news filled Su Shiyue with glee.
When Su Shiyue arrived at Bishui Yuntian, Fu Shinian was working in his study. Su Mu, on the other hand, was comfortably seated in a rattan chair in front of the ground-floor living room window, reading a book as the sunlight lazily streamed in, casting a glow around her. Su Shiyue chuckled softly as she approached:
"You were quite adept at presenting yourself as diligent back at the old house. Yet, in a place where Grandma can’t see you, you lounge around so leisurely. With such acting skills, why don’t you become an actress?"
Not expecting Su Shiyue to come to Bishui Yuntian, Su Mu put down her book and stood up from the rattan chair:
"Why are you here?"
"I can’t come? If I remember correctly, this property is under my brother’s name. And you, you’re merely a guest in this room!"
Having experienced Su Shiyue’s sharpness before—especially after the kidnapping incident—Su Mu realized that the sister-in-law relationship between them was likely irreparable for life. So, there were some things she no longer needed to yield on every front.
"Is that so? Even if I am merely a ’guest’, as you say, I am still the guest sleeping by your brother’s side."
