Chapter 32: Chapter 32 At Least You Have Me

Su Mu didn’t know what to say, first because she hadn’t expected Fu Shinian to investigate her accounts, and second because even if she gave her reasons, he would never believe them.

"Perhaps, as you just said, it’s about becoming an independent, modern woman?"

Her answer made Fu Shinian narrow his eyes slightly. Those who knew him well were very clear that this was a sign of danger. He couldn’t help but look at her a few more times and had to admit that she had indeed changed. She was like a hedgehog always on guard, her words no longer as compliant and harmless as before.

The words she spoke now had a sharpness that was hard to refute.

When had it all started?

Recalling recent events, Fu Shinian vaguely remembered that it was after he had forced himself on her in the emergency staircase against her will. However, it wasn’t like he hadn’t forced her in the previous two years; she had always been indifferent in that regard. If it weren’t for him taking the initiative each time, she probably would’ve been glad to go without it for a whole year.

But why did this particular time provoke such a strong reaction?

Yet he didn’t care to untangle the reasons behind it.

"Since you want to be an independent, modern woman, I can only respect that decision. Starting from next month, I won’t be so presumptuous as to give you an allowance anymore. As for the 60 million in your account..."

"I will pay you back." Su Mu interrupted him before he could finish, "I was going to return it to you anyway, just not in this way."

Fu Shinian laughed bitterly in his anger:

"Money given away has no reason to be taken back. Although I’m happy you’ve not seen yourself as Mrs. Fu, you’ve still put up with your distaste to sleep with me for two years. Those 60 million aren’t even enough for me to keep a mistress; you’re getting off cheaply."

Su Mu had never witnessed what Fu Shinian was like in the business world, but he was always brutally blunt and merciless with her, seemingly never considering how hurtful his words could be.

"Is that so? If Mr. Fu hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have known that the going rate for a kept woman has reached this high." Su Mu smiled as she looked at Fu Shinian. "I just wonder if my 60 million can find a man to my liking. Would Mr. Fu happen to have any acquaintances to introduce?"

Fu Shinian, who was initially heading upstairs, suddenly stopped at Su Mu’s words. He gave her a sidelong glance:

"What did you say?"

Su Mu didn’t repeat it. She must have been muddled by anger to subconsciously choose to infuriate him with self-destructive language. But once she calmed down, she realized that this did her no good.

"It’s nothing."

She stood up from the dining table, picked up the bowl of noodles that had clumped together, and prepared to dispose of it, but unexpectedly, Fu Shinian approached quickly and without warning, seizing her wrist. Su Mu wasn’t paying attention, and the bowl slipped from her hand, falling to the ground. Soup splashed onto her foot, dressed only in slippers, scalding her.

Su Mu instinctively tried to dodge, but Fu Shinian held her tightly, immobilizing her.

Fu Shinian wouldn’t notice these details; his eyes were fixed solely on Su Mu’s face. Even as she winced from the burn, he was indifferent. What he cared about was only the words Su Mu had just spoken:

"Repeat what you just said!"

"It was a slip of the tongue in anger. You shouldn’t take it to heart," Su Mu didn’t quite understand why he had reacted so strongly.

"A slip of the tongue in anger?" Fu Shinian scoffed coldly. "Su Mu, have I neglected disciplining you for too long? So much that you’ve forgotten who you are? You, who can’t even handle me without relying on drugs for satisfaction, think you can go find a man to keep? You’d be better off thinking about how to cure your condition!"

Auntie Lin, hearing the commotion, walked out from her room and saw them locked in confrontation. She was uncertain whether to approach, but when she saw Su Mu’s foot reddened by the burn, she still came over, carefully saying:

"Mr. Fu, Mrs. Fu’s foot has been scalded. Whatever you have to say can wait; she needs treatment first."

Fu Shinian let go of Su Mu but turned and left for upstairs without even a glance.

Seeing this, Auntie Lin hurried to support Su Mu, helping her to sit on the sofa:

"I’ll get the first-aid kit."

Su Mu smiled faintly: "Thank you, Auntie Lin."

Auntie Lin’s face showed concern, but she hesitated to speak and quickly went to retrieve the first-aid kit.

When Auntie Lin came back with the first-aid kit, Su Mu was leaning back against the sofa, staring emotionlessly out the window at the thick night sky, lost in thought. Her appearance was so pitiable that Auntie Lin hardly had the heart to disturb her. However, considering her injury, Auntie Lin carefully approached:

"Mrs. Fu, let me treat your burn."

Su Mu came to her senses:

"I can do it myself."

But Auntie Lin did not hand over the ointment to her, "You probably won’t be able to apply it carefully on your own."

Su Mu didn’t insist, "Thank you, Auntie Lin."

Auntie Lin carefully dabbed the ointment on Su Mu’s foot with a cotton swab, wincing at the sight of the foot that was almost completely burned. Su Mu, however, did not utter a sound or even flinch. Unable to hold back, Auntie Lin finally spoke:

"Mrs. Fu, why do you have to endure this? Mr. Fu may have a bit of a temper, but didn’t you have a good life these past two years by accommodating and indulging him?"

Su Mu smiled faintly:

"I’ve been in a bad mood recently, and I’ve worried you."

Auntie Lin had been working for the Fu family for many years, previously serving in the old mansion. She only started working at Bishui Yuntian after Fu Shinian got married. Auntie Lin was the housekeeper of Bishui Yuntian, but she was also an elder to Shinian. Su Mu respected her greatly.

"Is it because of Mr. Fu’s recent news?"

Su Mu wasn’t sure how to talk to Auntie Lin about the things she had encountered recently, so she just went along with the conversation, "You saw it too?"

Auntie Lin nodded, "Miss Qin indeed had a past with Mr. Fu, but you don’t need to mind that. Mr. Fu is not the kind of man to be fickle or keep other women on the side like some rich men do. He would never do anything to wrong you."

Su Mu didn’t respond, and thinking she was skeptical, Auntie Lin explained:

"What I said is true. I don’t know what other wealthy families are like, but having worked for the Fu family for decades, I’ve watched firsthand how the elder Mr. Fu treated Mrs. Fu and how Mr. Fu’s father treated his wife. Shinian’s grandfather and father have always taught him to be a man of responsibility and to take charge, starting with being accountable to his wife and family. A man who is not faithful to his wife cannot be trusted in business either," she said.

"Mr. Fu has been immersed in this ethos since childhood. Some things are so deeply ingrained that they cannot be changed. So rest assured, I believe Mr. Fu would never do anything to hurt you."

Su Mu smiled faintly:

"Was grandfather good to grandmother?"

"Of course." Auntie Lin smiled, "When the old master was alive, he was very good to the old lady. How do you young people say it... pampered her like a little princess? I remember one winter the old lady caught a cold but insisted on having ice cream. The senior Mr. Fu and Shinian were against it, but the old master secretly went out and bought her ice cream. Shinian was so annoyed, saying that it wasn’t being good to grandmother, but the old master simply replied, ’It’s not her fault she’s sick, but it’s my fault if I can’t satisfy her wishes.’ They were together for a lifetime, and I’ve never seen the old master lose his temper with the old lady, though she often vexed the old master quite a bit."

Upon hearing this, Su Mu couldn’t help but smile, even wishing she could travel back in time to see how the two elders interacted. They must have experienced the kind of love everyone envies, knowing and accompanying each other, loving and cherishing each other.

"What about dad and mom?"

When it came to Fu Shinian’s parents, Auntie Lin’s mood became less relaxed, even stealthily glancing upstairs to make sure Shinian wasn’t there before she began speaking in a much lower voice:

"The senior Mr. Fu was very good to his wife, extremely accommodating and never upset her, but the wife... she did not care much for the senior Mr. Fu, being distant and indifferent, never taking Shinian’s father to heart, even having affairs outside."

Su Mu was stunned; she had always thought that Shinian lived in an enviable family where life from childhood to adulthood must have been carefree. She never imagined that he too had hidden pains.

Suddenly, she understood his recent rage. His mother had an affair, so he couldn’t bear his wife acting like his mother. Her actions had undoubtedly ripped open his old wounds completely.

"Then Shinian..."

"Mr. Fu had a hard time as a child. Since his wife didn’t like his father, she also disliked Mr. Fu, even considering abortion when she found out she was pregnant. It was the senior Mr. Fu who pleaded for a long time before she gave up on the idea. Throughout his life, she never cared for him when he was sick, never drove him to school, and didn’t even remember his birthday."

Su Mu fell silent, feeling a heaviness in her chest, as if a fist was gripping her heart tighter and tighter, spreading pain throughout her entire body.

She knew no one was perfect, and no one could lead a flawless life, but she could never have guessed that Shinian’s deficiencies were caused by his mother. She couldn’t imagine that there were mothers in this world who didn’t love their children.

Such an outstanding person, handsome and smart, and yet could not he earn even a bit more affection from his mother?

After applying the ointment to Su Mu’s foot, Auntie Lin packed up the medicine box and saw that Su Mu was still in a daze. She couldn’t help but add:

"Mrs. Fu, everything I told you today is true. You need to take it to heart. Mr. Fu despises infidelity because of what his mother did. It’s something he would never do; that’s his bottom line. Being close with Miss Qin might just be about handling some matter."

At that moment, Su Mu had completely set aside her own feelings. Her mind and heart were filled with thoughts of Shinian, longing for maternal love he couldn’t receive. She wanted to hug him, to offer him warmth, and to tell him, ’Even if the whole world turns its back on you, at least you still have me.’
