Chapter 319: Want a Trial Period
Chapter 319: Chapter 319: Want a Trial Period
Su Mu took a small step back and gently shook her head:
"Wen Han, this isn’t fair."
Wen Han’s hand froze in the air for a few seconds before he looked at her, "Where is it not fair?"
"Everywhere is not fair." After saying this, Su Mu settled back into the rattan chair, only this time she wrapped her arms tightly around herself, as if only in this way could she fully calm down. Wen Han watched her quietly, not pressing her, and stood looking up at the night sky:
"Su Mu, to be honest, I never thought I would fail."
Su Mu didn’t speak, and Wen Han fell into silence too. On the battlefield his goals were clear, his actions swift and decisive, he had never hesitated. He always took out one enemy after another with speed, ferocity, and precision, achieving one target after another to the best of his abilities.
But he had never encountered the situation he was in now. He looked at Su Mu and spoke softly:
"Even though I’ve said so much, even though I don’t ask you to like me, to love me, even though as a soldier I assure you I will never let you down, and even though it makes me very sad... are you still going to reject me?"
"Su Mu, let’s not be together officially for now. Let’s try it out, just like when you go job hunting, the company gives you a probationary period. Give me a probationary period too, at least give me a chance to prove myself, to prove I’m not just talking, and even if in the end you really decide against it, this trial period will have fulfilled a dream of mine, okay?"
Su Mu slowly raised her eyes to look at him, meeting the gaze of Wen Han as he looked at her. She said:
"Wen Han, I know what it’s like to gain and then lose, I know what it feels like to harbor hope only to end up in despair, and I am acutely aware of the cruelty of standing on the clouds one moment and plummeting into hell the next – I’ve tasted each of these. I can’t give you hope, because I don’t know what the outcome will be."
"What if I don’t care about the outcome?" Wen Han looked at her earnestly, "I don’t mind how it turns out, I can accept it if you ultimately don’t love me. Are you still going to reject me?"
Su Mu looked at him with incomprehension:
"Why must you insist on this?"
"Because I want to give myself a chance, and also give you a chance." Wen Han moved forward and squatted in front of her, "Su Mu, three years have passed already, Qiqi has grown so much, and at 27, you can’t possibly be alone forever."
"I can be very good on my own, you’ve seen it, I’ve been fine all these three years."
"On the surface, it seems fine, but you know better than anyone that you’re not really fine. Qiqi will grow up slowly, she’ll have more and more friends, and whether you like it or not, there will come a day when she won’t need you as much. She’ll get married, she’ll have her own family. Then... what about you? Alone? Qiqi would never be at ease. She is an understanding child, and so in many of her choices, she’ll consider you. You definitely don’t want to become her concern because of yourself."
Just as Su Mu was about to say something, she realized that she had no counterargument, because everything Wen Han said was true.
"If there’s someone by your side who’s good to you, who loves and cares about you, Qiqi would be reassured. She’d also soar higher and farther in her own sky, wouldn’t she? Let’s not think about ourselves, let’s set aside love and like. Even for Qiqi’s sake, you should live well."
After saying all this, Wen Han said no more, and Su Mu also fell silent for a long time. In the end, she didn’t give Wen Han a definite answer, she merely said:
"Let me think about it."
"Okay."
Wen Han smiled.
It was only when they returned from the balcony to the living room that they realized Wei Shaoqin and Jiang Bei’s eyes were focused on them. They could probably guess the nature of the conversation between the two, even if they hadn’t heard the specifics. Su Mu was not in the mood to explain; she was a mess, only managing a small smile before she went to check on Qiqi.
When Wen Han took the seat next to Wei Shaoqin, Wei Shaoqin’s expression was slightly annoyed. Wen Han didn’t pay him any attention, and after a while, his emotions seemed to self-dissipate as he said softly:
"If she agrees, you can’t let her down again, otherwise I will really fight you."
Wen Han gave a faint smile:
"Don’t worry."
Although she hadn’t agreed yet.
Late that evening, Ji Nanfeng came to pick up Jiang Bei. On the way back, Jiang Bei gazed out of the window in silence. Ji Nanfeng thought she was in a bad mood and asked:
"What’s wrong? Wasn’t it a birthday party? What was the theme? Heartbreak 1999?"
Jiang Bei shook her head slightly:
"Just feeling a bit sentimental."
Ji Nanfeng glanced at her:
"The people at today’s gathering, the only one who could make you feel sentimental is probably just Su Mu, right? Has something happened to her again?"
Jiang Bei had never taken the initiative to talk to Ji Nanfeng about Su Mu’s matters, as after all, his relationship with Fu Shinian was extraordinary. But today, she didn’t want to hide it because she really hoped Ji Nanfeng would go and inform Fu Shinian. She looked at Ji Nanfeng and smiled faintly:
"It’s not a bad thing, it’s a good thing."
The good news about Su Mu gave Ji Nanfeng a foreboding feeling, and he ventured cautiously:
"A good thing? What is it?"
"Someone confessed to Su Mu, and she also said she would think about it. She has finally stopped closing herself off and is ready to start a new romance. Isn’t that worth being sentimental about?"
Ji Nanfeng pursed his lips:
"Wen Han?"
"Yeah, she and Su Mu have always been a good match. Many years ago, it was he who saved Su Mu. If it weren’t for someone meddling, perhaps some things wouldn’t have turned out the way they are now."
"I can’t agree with that statement," Ji Nanfeng spoke defensively for Fu Shinian. "If Shinian hadn’t intervened back then, Su Mu might not even be alive today. Frankly, Su Mu doesn’t owe him anything. Shinian truly did save her life, it’s just that he didn’t take her away from the scene of the car accident."
"But the person Su Mu wants to repay is the one who did take her from the accident scene, and Shinian has always known but never said anything. His intentions can’t have been good, right?"
Ji Nanfeng wanted to say more but was interrupted by Jiang Bei:
"You don’t need to tell me the good or bad of Fu Shinian, I have eyes, and I can see for myself."
Ji Nanfeng: "..."
——
After Wei Shaoqin left, Wen Han was also ready to leave. Wen Shaoyuan was somewhat reluctant to let go, but considering Su Mu’s current emotional turmoil, Wen Han did not agree to him staying overnight. However, Su Mu spoke softly:
"Let Shaoyuan stay. I’m free tomorrow, and I can play with them for a day."
"You need to rest properly."
"I’m quite alright," said Su Mu. "It’s just that I might send Qiqi to the Wen Family’s place for a couple of days the day after tomorrow. I have a shoot in Shen City and it’s not convenient to bring her along."
In the past, Su Mu always did her best to take Qiqi with her for shoots. This time, her initiative in opting not to bring her made Wen Han curious:
"Is it because of him?"
