Chapter 30: Demanding Justice for My Wife
Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Demanding Justice for My Wife
Ji Nanfeng gave Wei Shaoqin a glance, reseated himself, and continued to leisurely smoke. Everyone sensed the tension in the air growing thick, especially after Ji Nanfeng had lost his temper, so they took the injured person and left the room. For a moment, only Ji Nanfeng, Wei Shaoqin, and Su Mu remained.
Tired of playing charades with Wei Shaoqin, Ji Nanfeng got straight to the point:
"I already know why you called me here today, but do you really think you’ll get an answer from me?"
"You’ve already told me," Wei Shaoqin glanced at Su Mu and took his seat again, "Didn’t your attitude just now say it all? Su Mu and Fu Shinian must have a deep connection; otherwise, you wouldn’t have gotten so angry."
"Since you know, then you don’t need me to tell you what to do. She’s not a woman you can touch."
Wei Shaoqin looked at Su Mu and gave a slight smile:
"What if I insist on touching?"
Ji Nanfeng narrowed his eyes: "Are you tired of living?"
Wei Shaoqin laughed and said nothing, but Su Mu felt like she was being played amidst their conversation. Just as she was about to speak, Wei Shaoqin beat her to it:
"Didn’t you come here to ask for my help? Go ahead, I’m listening."
Suppressing the urge to roll her eyes, Su Mu said:
"To ask you to stop being so childish and stupid?"
Wei Shaoqin: "..."
Ji Nanfeng chuckled lightly, turning to look at Su Mu and found that she didn’t seem much different from the Su Mu he usually saw. Yet, he felt like she was a completely different person. The Su Mu by Fu Shinian’s side was always cautious, giving off the air of an accessory, whereas the Su Mu now was sharp, proud, and independent.
Su Mu glared at Ji Nanfeng, disappointed for overestimating him, having thought he could hold back. It turned out he couldn’t control his actions after all.
Her annoyance was so obvious Ji Nanfeng couldn’t ignore it even if he wanted to. He stood up from his seat and stood in front of Su Mu:
"I’m leaving now. Will you stay here or leave with me?"
"We’re not close."
Ji Nanfeng raised an eyebrow, moved closer to Su Mu, and asked in a voice only the two of them could hear:
"Has Shinian ever seen this prickly side of you, sister-in-law?"
Su Mu stepped away from him as if he were some contagious virus. Ji Nanfeng didn’t continue to tease her and left with a smile.
After Ji Nanfeng left, Su Mu had no intention of staying any longer either. Talk to Wei Shaoqin and ask him not to disturb her life anymore? Su Mu didn’t think so; she believed a moron wouldn’t understand normal human language.
Su Mu walked towards the door, Wei Shaoqin spoke up to stop her:
"You’re really not going to ask me?"
Su Mu looked at him with distaste: "I’ve had one question I’ve wanted to know for a long time."
"Tell me."
"What kind of bad karma did I accumulate to catch your eye?"
Wei Shaoqin: "..."
"The reason I’m standing in front of you today is to tell you to stop bothering Oolong Tea. I won’t be working there anymore, and you can put an end to your boring and childish games."
"Su Mu," Wei Shaoqin called out to her as she reached the door, "actually, the company never processed your resignation; it was just a leave of absence. You can come back and continue working."
"No need; I’d rather avoid an employer like you at all costs."
...
After Ji Nanfeng left the banquet, he went straight to Fu Corporation.
In the top-floor office, he pushed the door open and walked in. Fu Shinian was reclining in his chair with his eyes closed. He frowned at the noise but softened his expression when he saw Ji Nanfeng:
"What brings you here?"
"Guess who I just saw?"
Fu Shinian looked at him excitedly and said indifferently, "Su Mu?"
Ji Nanfeng: "..."
There was no suspense; he guessed the answer without any challenge, making Ji Nanfeng feel somewhat deflated, "Even if you knew, with how excited I am, you could have at least humored me a bit."
Fu Shinian chuckled:
"I’m not as free as you."
Ji Nanfeng gave him a look, suddenly losing the mood to argue, and leaned back leisurely, tapping the desk:
"Make me a coffee."
Fu Shinian looked at him disdainfully but still pressed the intercom for the secretary to bring in a coffee. He had expected Ji Nanfeng to share his encounter with Su Mu during this time, but until he had finished his coffee, Ji Nanfeng showed no intention of speaking.
"Alright, I’ve finished my coffee, and I should get going. I won’t hold up your work."
Fu Shinian watched him with a smile:
"I’m not going to ask you what really happened between you and Su Mu, so don’t try that trick on me. Just make sure you don’t feel suffocated once you step out of this office,"
Having said that, he continued to review documents on his desk. Ji Nanfeng stood opposite him, feeling an impulse to pick a fight as he watched his nonchalant demeanor. He couldn’t understand why his childhood friend had become so infuriating?
Taking into account that he might indeed feel suffocated once he left, he decided not to hold back and opened his mouth:
"Wei Shaoqin had someone bring Su Mu over today, and I just happened to be there playing cards."
Fu Shinian paused from signing documents and looked up at Ji Nanfeng, "So?"
Ji Nanfeng recounted the incident to Fu Shinian, and seeing that Fu Shinian’s face remained impassive, he said helplessly, "Could you show some reaction?"
"What kind of reaction do you want? I’m not one of those women you can easily take to bed!"
Ji Nanfeng: "....I’ve known Su Mu for two years now, and it was the first time I saw her so sharp-tongued. I thought she had always been a meek little rabbit."
Fu Shinian gave a light laugh. Su Mu, a little rabbit? Heh, that was probably the funniest joke he had ever heard.
"They say you are always accurate in judging people, but I didn’t expect you to be wrong this time. If she were truly a naive and gullible rabbit, how could she have resorted to such tactics to win a marriage? She’s just good at disguising herself, pretending to be a gentle and kind wife, which is exactly how she deceived grandmother, isn’t it?"
However, in the past few days, she seemed to struggle more and more to maintain her facade, with a tendency to reveal her true self.
He began to look forward to the day she would completely remove her mask.
"But have you ever considered, why does she insist on marrying you? You offered her half of the Fu Corporation and she didn’t take it. I thought she had other intentions, but two years have passed, and aside from getting you, she hasn’t gained anything else." Ji Nanfeng spoke seriously for once. "And about you, these past two years have been the most erratic I’ve seen you. I remember you didn’t initially dislike the marriage, even Ah Yu and I thought you two would just continue on, but that didn’t last long before you completely changed."
"Are you suggesting that Su Mu likes me?"
"It’s not impossible."
Fu Shinian suddenly remembered what Su Mu had said before, "Can’t I like you?"
Unfortunately, he had plenty of reasons not to believe it.
Fu Shinian didn’t like to talk much about his love life, and Ji Nanfeng understood this, so he changed the subject.
"You’ve already called Wei Shaoqin, and he might have guessed something about your relationship with Su Mu, so today I didn’t hold back and showed a bit of protection for Su Mu, as a warning to Wei Shaoqin. It’s better for him not to entertain any ideas about Su Mu, although I know it might not be of any use."
Fu Shinian didn’t pursue the topic further:
"I’ve recently taken a liking to a piece of land, are you interested?"
Ji Nanfeng almost immediately knew his intention:
"Are you going to compete with Wei Shaoqin for that piece of land in Lin Hai?"
"He’s been a bit too idle lately. I need to find him something to do."
Competing for the land was just a front, the true aim was to trouble Wei Shaoqin, right? Everyone in the city knew that Junyue wanted to open another branch in Shen City, and the Lin Hai property was the ideal location. Wei Shaoqin was determined to get it, but with Fu Shinian’s intervention, the outcome was no longer certain.
"Why should I meddle in an affair meant to defend your wife?"
Fu Shinian: "... At the month’s end, the Ten Year Film and Television press conference will officially announce Qin Nianwan. If you’re free, come and show support."
"No," Ji Nanfeng refused decisively. "I don’t get involved in your affairs with women. I always remember that I’m just here to watch."
Fu Shinian: "..."
After Ji Nanfeng left, Fu Shinian did not continue with his work for quite some time. He was considering what Ji Nanfeng had just told him. He said that Su Mu worked at the milk tea shop during the day, but he distinctly remembered that just last night, Su Mu had told him she wanted to visit the sanatorium to take care of her mother. It seemed her habit of lying had not changed.
He pressed the intercom and asked Song Yi to come in, then got straight to the point:
"Check the recent work status of my wife, as detailed as possible."
"Yes."
Song Yi was very efficient, and before leaving work, he placed the report on Fu Shinian’s desk:
"This is the situation of your wife’s part-time jobs at Oolong Tea and the ride-hailing company for the past half month."
Fu Shinian flipped through the detailed report, which included several surveillance screenshots. He saw the lovable yet clumsy mascot enduring 30-plus degree heat to cutely distribute flyers. When she took off the costume, she looked as if she had just emerged from a pool, but her face bore a satisfied smile he had never seen before.
As for the driving service, it was even more puzzling. She was busy until about 2 a.m. every night. Even if she needed to work, there was no need to push herself so hard. Was she truly that obsessed with money, or did she really need it?
Fu Shinian closed the folders:
"Check her bank account."
Minutes later, Song Yi placed the bank statement of Su Mu in front of Fu Shinian:
"Starting two years ago, this card has only seen deposits and no withdrawals. There’s currently 62.2 million in the account."
62.2 million meant that for the two years of their marriage, Su Mu hadn’t touched a penny of the living expenses he gave her. She had even transferred the 200 thousand from last night’s ride-hailing job to this account. She wasn’t spending his money at all. Why?
Song Yi handed over another bank statement:
"This is the wife’s frequently used account statement, with a balance of just about 1000 yuan."
Fu Shinian glanced at it; she really was short on money. No wonder she was so desperate to earn more.
