Chapter 29: Chapter 29: An Equal Match in a Game of Chess

Su Mu naturally knew that he was always generous to her in material terms and never bickered about it, but she couldn’t rightfully enjoy all of this. Call her affected or foolish, her dignity was the only thing she could hold onto, the last bit of pride she had.

She smiled faintly,

"If you dislike this job of mine, I can simply quit."

Whether Su Mu was telling a lie, Fu Shinian could tell at a glance.

He believed that Su Mu had truly resigned, and he could somewhat guess the reasons, but he didn’t believe the reason she gave for being a designated driver, fearing that she simply couldn’t find a better job.

He’d heard about Wei Shaoqin’s tactics before. Thinking that Su Mu had no background, he used such despicable means to force her to become his woman, activities Wei Shaoqin likely found easy to perform.

But what about Su Mu? She said nothing, fully aware that all she needed to do was speak up, and any kind of job could be hers and any trouble could be resolved for her. Yet, she chose to be that independent, strong woman who shouldered everything alone.

If that was the case, he wasn’t inclined to intervene any longer.

"As you wish. As long as you don’t parade around using Mrs. Fu’s name to commit fraud and embarrass me, whether you live or die, what does it have to do with me?"

Su Mu looked up at him, ultimately saying nothing more.

Fu Shinian probably lost interest as well, turning and walking toward the door. However, at the door, as if remembering something, he turned back to look at her:

"Since Mrs. Fu has chosen to stay in the guest room permanently, from now on, you needn’t worry about my physical needs either."

It took Su Mu a few seconds to comprehend his words:

"What do you mean?"

"Being a graduate of a prestigious university, you don’t understand the literal meaning? You choosing to stay in the guest room is no different from pushing me into someone else’s arms with your own hands."

Su Mu looked at him, her eyes calm without a ripple, not knowing whether she didn’t believe his words or if she was disappointed in him to the point of indifference.

Was it really that surprising? He had always been a devil, and it was only her stubborn belief that painted him as an angel.

"In your eyes, do I have any significance beyond satisfying your desires?"

Fu Shinian smiled faintly,

"Don’t underestimate yourself; your role is much greater than you think."

As Su Mu sat alone in the guest room with dawn fast approaching, she, utterly exhausted, found herself not the least bit sleepy. She curled up on the sofa in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, firmly hugging herself.

It had been two years. From the very beginning of this marriage, she knew it would be hard, but she had ultimately underestimated the mixture of joy and sorrow in marriage and overestimated her own endurance.

Had she not chosen to marry him, would the ending have been completely rewritten?

----

Su Mu slept hazily for three hours, waking up around nine o’clock. Her recent severe lack of sleep made her dark circles so pronounced that not even concealer could hide them. Fortunately, her job did not require showing her face, allowing her to retreat into a cute doll costume, where she could reject expressing any sorrows or joys.

However, Su Mu had never anticipated that in the afternoon, two menacing men in black would suddenly appear at the door, politely turning away anyone who dared approach the milk tea shop.

When Su Mu finished handing out flyers and returned, she saw this scene, entering the shop and taking off her doll costume to see Chacha and Wu Long with worried expressions sitting there, and she asked,

"What’s going on? Who are those two outside?"

Chacha shook her head,

"We don’t know them, they’ve been here for a while now, standing there preventing customers from coming in."

"Did you call the police?"

Wu Long: "The police have already been here, but they haven’t caused any trouble or entered the shop, so the police just spoke a few words and left."

Having been together for some days, Su Mu knew Chacha and Wu Long weren’t the type to harbor grudges against anyone, but seeing those two outside fully prepared, it didn’t seem like they were at the wrong place, and an ominous feeling rose within her.

"I’ll go out and check."

"Su Mu," Chacha stopped her, "don’t go, look at their fierce appearance. It doesn’t matter if we close for the day, I don’t believe they will come every day."

"It’s fine."

Su Mu went out and directly approached one of the men in black, asking,

"Who sent you here?"

The man in black didn’t hide it, his attitude respectful: "Young Master Wei."

Su Mu didn’t need to ask further; she understood completely. Wei Shaoqin was using force directly, now trying a roundabout way to make her compromise. Su Mu didn’t know whether to admire his persistence and patience or to curse his foolishness and dirtiness.

"What will it take for you to leave?"

"As long as Miss Su agrees to meet Young Master Wei, we will naturally leave."

"Sure," Su Mu replied, "I’ll go with you."

Su Mu returned to the store to say goodbye to Chacha and Oolong, and after she reassured them several times that she would be fine, they allowed her to leave. Before leaving, Su Mu carefully examined the setup of the shop, thinking she would probably never return to work there again if nothing unexpected happened.

Su Mu was taken to the Shengyan Club, a place regarded by the people of Shen City as a palace. The staff, likely having received instructions early on, led Su Mu all the way to the door of a private room on the top floor.

"Miss Su, this is the place," they said.

Su Mu nodded, "Thank you."

The club’s soundproofing was excellent, which was the first thing Su Mu noticed upon entering, as she hadn’t heard any noise at the door.

Everyone was having a great time, and few paid attention to her. Su Mu looked around and spotted Wei Shaoqin in a card game at the southeast corner. She walked over, snatched the cards from Wei Shaoqin’s hands, and slammed them down on the table.

This startled everyone at the table, and then the whole room quieted down.

Wei Shaoqin didn’t show any particular reaction. Unperturbed by Su Mu’s bold move, he leaned back leisurely in his chair, watching her mockingly,

"That was quick. I thought I’d have to wait until evening to see you," he said.

"Wei Shaoqin, there should be limits to how low you can stoop. You keep resorting to the dirtiest tricks. I, the person you’re targeting, am embarrassed for you. Can’t you come up with something more sophisticated, at least to give me the sense that I’m facing a worthy opponent?"

The room fell silent for a moment until a man sitting with his back to Su Mu broke the silence,

"Where did Junior President Wei find this fiery lady?"

Su Mu furrowed her brows slightly. The man’s voice sounded familiar, but before she could pinpoint it, others started to join in the heckling.

"Wei, what did you do to upset this beauty? Did you rack up another romantic debt outside?"

"It doesn’t sound like it. It sounds more like Wei forced a good woman into a bad trade..."

"She is indeed beautiful, but I’m afraid Wei might not be able to handle it."

...

Amid the jeers, Wei Shaoqin wasn’t the slightest bit angry. He kept his gaze fixed on Su Mu, admiring her imperious and fearless demeanor as if he found it mesmerizing.

He smiled and lit a cigarette,

"A worthy opponent? I did attend elementary school, Miss Su. Are you perhaps misunderstanding that idiom? If you truly had a worthy opponent, you wouldn’t have been forced to quit your job and resort to handing out flyers on the streets and working as a designated driver. You certainly wouldn’t be standing before me now."

The man sitting with his back to Su Mu glanced up at Wei Shaoqin and chortled, seemingly mocking his crude methods.

Seeing this, Wei Shaoqin didn’t get upset. Instead, he introduced Su Mu,

"Su Mu, let me introduce you. This is Third Master Ji, well known to everyone in Shen City."

Su Mu never expected to meet Ji Nanfeng here. When had he become so close to Wei Shaoqin? It seemed that the affluent had their ways of coming together.

Ji Nanfeng didn’t look at Su Mu. He tossed his cards onto the table, leaned back in his chair, and casually lit a cigarette. He then looked at Wei Shaoqin,

"Junior President Wei specifically invited me here today. It can’t just be to show me the woman you’re interested in, can it?"

"They say Third Master Ji is extremely discerning, and I wanted you to take a look," replied Wei.

"Do you think I’m that idle?" retorted Ji Nanfeng.

Su Mu had remained silent. From her perspective, everything Wei Shaoqin did today was deliberate. He could have troubled the tea shop anytime, so why choose today? Earlier, she heard Ji Nanfeng mention that Wei Shaoqin specifically invited him, indicating that his intent was not to make her lose her job but rather to probe her relationship with Fu Shinian, especially since everyone in Shen City knew that Ji Nanfeng and Fu Shinian grew up together.

Ji Nanfeng’s indifference was exactly what Su Mu wanted to see. Of course, she wasn’t deluded enough to think Ji Nanfeng was considering her feelings. Until Fu Shinian made their relationship public, Ji Nanfeng would do everything to keep it a secret for Fu Shinian.

"Third Master Ji has romanced enough women to form a reinforced battalion. It looks like Wei has really fallen for this one," someone commented.

"Come on, if Third Master Ji is a reinforced battalion, then Wei is at least a platoon. How long do any of the women by his side last more than a month?"

"I remember Wei was sent abroad by old Master Wei after he got a woman pregnant. The woman was forced into an abortion that went wrong, and she ended up jumping off a building," another added.

Su Mu frowned slightly at this.

"Wei, this hot pepper looks better than any celebrity in the entertainment industry. When you’re tired of her, consider taking care of your brothers," said another.

Before Su Mu could react, Ji Nanfeng, who had been silent, suddenly stood up. Unbeknownst to anyone, he had picked up a glass filled with whiskey and violently smashed it on the man’s head, causing blood to gush out immediately.

Everyone was shocked, including Su Mu.

The man lay on the ground, clutching his head but didn’t dare complain. Everyone here was wealthy or noble, but who could compare with Fu Shinian and Ji Nanfeng? So even if beaten and humiliated, they could only swallow their teeth and blood.

Wei Shaoqin chuckled, stood from his seat, and walked over to Su Mu,

"I’m a bit puzzled by Third Master Ji’s actions. What about you? Have you also taken an interest in this woman?"
