Chapter 295: Chapter 295: A Year Ago, They Had Met Once

This was the first time Jiang Bei mentioned Fu Shinian to Su Mu after her divorce, as well as any news related to him.

There were things she originally did not want to say, but since Wen Han had stirred up the seemingly calm surface of Su Mu’s emotions, Jiang Bei felt there was no need to hide certain things. After all, seeing Su Mu’s state, even if she didn’t speak up, Su Mu would still have wild thoughts:

"You’ve met Fu Shinian’s girlfriend, the woman he brought to my wedding, Xu Yansu. She’s a doctor at a well-known research institute abroad. She returned three years ago and saved grandma; afterward, she stayed by Fu Shinian’s side. They have been together for about two years now."

Su Mu chuckled lightly, looking at Jiang Bei:

"Why tell me this?"

"Don’t you want to know? Otherwise, you wouldn’t be so distracted."

Su Mu shook her head: "I just wanted to make sure the news Wen Han brought was true."

"Actually, you know it’s true. After all, Wen Han wouldn’t tell you if he wasn’t completely sure."

Yes, Su Mu was aware of how Wen Han was as a person and understood that most things he uttered were already the truth. Yet, she still found it somewhat unbelievable—perhaps she just couldn’t believe that someone who had once been so full of life was now tormented by illness.

Su Mu did not speak, but Jiang Bei had her own opinion:

"Susu, do you believe there’s such a thing as karma in this world?"

Su Mu looked at Jiang Bei, silent.

"I believe there is, and Fu Shinian is the best example. The way he treated you back then, what he’s going through now is heaven’s punishment and retribution for him."

"Is there no cure for his illness?"

"Are you worried about him?"

Su Mu shook her head: "No, I just feel it’s already rare for the old lady to have contracted this disease, but now even he has it. I’m worried there might be a hereditary factor involved."

"Are you worried about Qiqi?"

"Yes. She’s still young and shows no signs of anything abnormal, but years ago Fu Shinian also showed no signs of anything." Su Mu was troubled: "How is the old lady doing now?"

"How to put it? Not too good, but also no worse than three years ago. Even what Xu Yansu can do is only to control the condition and prevent frequent flare-ups, but the effect is minimal."

The topic made the atmosphere between the two quite heavy, and Jiang Bei could not find comforting words to say. She only mentioned that she would find an opportunity to ask Ji Nanfeng what he knew. Half an hour later, Jiang Bei’s phone rang again, and she got up to leave.

Aside from the two little ones who had already slipped into dreamland, the only one left awake in the large room was Su Mu. After taking a shower and dealing with some photos on her computer, she prepared to go to bed but tossed and turned, finding no trace of sleepiness. She regretfully thought that she should have insisted on not taking a nap that afternoon, but it was too late for regrets now.

She got out of bed to check on Su Yimo and Wen Shaoyuan, finding them still sleeping soundly in the same position as before, so she smiled and quietly left.

She reopened her computer to sort through photos, but when she opened a folder, she inadvertently found one from three years ago. It contained photos she had taken during the Spring Festival, holding the mindset that post-divorce, she would never return to the old house and wanted to preserve memories for the future.

But who could have predicted that the marriage would indeed end, yet she had never once opened this folder of memories.

The cursor hovered over the folder for a long time, but ultimately she did not click it.

Releasing the mouse, Su Mu rubbed her temples wearily, leaning back in her chair as she looked out into the night. Yet again, she couldn’t help thinking about the words Wen Han had shared with her in the kitchen today, that Fu Shinian had been diagnosed with the same illness as the old lady two years ago, but a year ago when she saw him, Fu Shinian was still in good health.

Yes, a year ago, at Jiang Bei’s wedding, they had seen each other once.

Jiang Bei and Ji Nanfeng ending up together was something nobody had expected, even Jiang Bei herself sometimes reflected on it as incredible, but perhaps this is life, always filled with the unforeseen.

Because of Ji Nanfeng’s relationship with Fu Shinian, Su Mu couldn’t possibly be absent, and Fu Shinian also had to appear, which caused Jiang Bei some conflict.

The night before the wedding, Jiang Bei told Su Mu that she could skip her wedding, but Su Mu didn’t want to miss the most important day of Jiang Bei’s life, after all, she was her only close girlfriend.

"It’s just a meeting, not a fight, we’re all adults, there won’t be any problems," Su Mu said with a slight smile. "Besides, it’s not like I’ll never come back to Shen City, there’s always a chance for a coincidence."

Yes, the world isn’t too big or too small, everyone is in the same city, and social circles often overlap, avoiding someone completely isn’t an easy thing to do.

But who knows if the fate between Su Mu and Fu Shinian had all worn out at the time of their divorce, such that in the two years after the divorce, Su Mu had never once run into Fu Shinian. Of course, that was the best outcome, but occasionally she couldn’t help but wonder if this was some special arrangement by fate.

On the day of the wedding, Su Mu served as the photographer and didn’t bring Su Yimo with her, regardless of whether Fu Shinian was there or not, Su Yimo was not suitable for such an occasion.

From the apartment to the new house, and then to the hotel’s resting room, Su Mu never caught a glimpse of Fu Shinian. She felt neither disappointed nor relieved; after all, she wasn’t here to see him, nor did she intend to avoid him.

All her attention was on Jiang Bei, and at this moment, in the resting room with just the two of them, Su Mu sat beside Jiang Bei and spoke of things that shouldn’t have been mentioned again:

"I wish I could hear you say ’I don’t want to get married’, but I clearly know that you wouldn’t do that."

Jiang Bei answered with a slight smile upon hearing this:

"If you already know, why bother saying it?"

"I don’t want to see you so resigned to your fate." Su Mu looked at her. "I have never seen an expression of ’resignation’ on a bride’s face. What did you tell me when I was getting married? You’re so rational, so clear about what you want, why did you end up making the same choice as me in the end?"

Jiang Bei looked down at her phone, her fingertips gently caressing it as if she were waiting and hoping for something, but eventually she put the phone away, placing it aside, and with a faint smile, she looked at Su Mu:

"Having been sensible for so long, I’ve always wanted to taste what impulsiveness is like."

Just as Su Mu was about to say something more, there was a gentle knock on the door of the resting room. The next second, Ji Nanfeng in a black suit pushed the door open and saw the two women sitting side by side. He smiled lightly:

"Did I interrupt your conversation?"

Su Mu shook her head:

"No."

Ji Nanfeng probably knew what they were discussing but didn’t point it out. He smiled slightly and then changed the subject:

"I thought you wouldn’t show up today."

That comment was directed at Su Mu, and the reason was clear to everyone. Su Mu replied with a slight smile:

"I couldn’t possibly miss Xiaobei’s important day."

"Hmm, someone else might share your sentiment, even though I said I wouldn’t mind, they still came."
