Chapter 270: Chapter 270 Pregnant

The entire rescue process went by without Su Mu having any consciousness; she only knew that when she woke up, it was already the afternoon of the next day.

She opened her eyes to a blur of whiteness, and it took her a long time to recognize that this was a hospital. The memories from before she lost consciousness slowly flooded into her mind. She remembered Song Zhengxian, the phone call she had made to Fu Shinian, yet she had no idea why she was there at all.

But at the thought of Fu Shinian, she almost immediately sat up in bed. The abrupt movement pulled at the IV on the back of her hand, causing blood to flow back into it, but she ignored the pain, even pulling out the needle directly, and was about to head to the door after putting on her shoes when the door to the ward suddenly opened, and Qiao Yu walked in.

Qiao Yu was somewhat surprised by Su Mu’s awakening and frowned slightly at the sight of the blood on her hand. He hurried over to press her back down onto the bed:

"What are you doing? Have you lost your mind right after waking up?"

"Where is Shinian?" Su Mu tightly grasped Qiao Yu’s hand, staring at him: "How is Shinian? Was it him who rescued me? Is he hurt? Where is he now?"

Qiao Yu looked at Su Mu for a few seconds, then hesitated to speak, finally lowering his head under Su Mu’s urgent gaze, carefully cleaning the blood on her hand with a cotton swab, and then pressed the call button for the nurse to bring another set of IV equipment. His evasive eyes gave Su Mu an uneasy premonition:

"Why won’t you look at me? Where is Shinian? What has happened to him? Speak up!"

"He’s fine." Qiao Yu finally looked up at her, smiling slightly: "He’s doing well."

Perhaps it was Qiao Yu’s previous odd reaction that made Su Mu unable to believe his words now; she couldn’t be bothered to question further. After all, if someone decides to lie, one can never extract the truth from them.

She didn’t want to ask anymore; she could find out the truth for herself.

But Qiao Yu stopped her again, saying earnestly:

"I’m not lying to you, he really is fine, he’s now with Grandma."

Su Mu still looked at Qiao Yu with full skepticism, so he had no choice but to come clean: "Grandma’s old illness relapsed when you were kidnapped, and now she’s still unconscious, in much worse condition than last time. Her organs are starting to fail progressively..."

Su Mu could hardly believe what she was hearing. She couldn’t accept that before she left the old house, she was still embracing and talking to the old lady, who promised to be the first person she saw upon waking up. How could everything have changed so suddenly?

Qiao Yu sighed:

"I didn’t want to say it at first because I was afraid you’d get angry. After all, Shinian chose not to rescue you due to the sudden deterioration of Grandma’s health but instead stayed in the hospital with her."

At that moment, Su Mu felt as if she had gone deaf, or perhaps she was unwilling to trust what she heard, but the fact was that she was acutely aware of the choice Fu Shinian had made.

She wasn’t quite sure what she felt inside, a mix of relief and loss existed. Relieved because Fu Shinian was safe, well, and without any danger in the hospital with Grandma, and no mishap had befallen him. The loss was because between herself and Grandma, he had chosen Grandma.

Actually, there was nothing wrong with that; from the very beginning, she knew what place Grandma had in Fu Shinian’s heart, and she even supported him in that decision. But now that it was happening right in front of her, she realized that no matter how understanding one might be, there would still be a sense of loss.

Seeing Su Mu not speaking, Qiao Yu also felt uncomfortable and tried to console her:

"Actually, Shinian’s first choice was you, but then Grandma arrived at the hospital, and after a series of examinations, no one expected the situation to be different this time, organ failure. I called him fearing he might have regrets if he didn’t see her, and that’s when he came back."

Su Mu nodded faintly:

"It’s okay, it’s okay... as long as he’s fine."

She claimed to be fine, but no one was blind; everyone could see the loss and the sudden downturn of emotion in Su Mu’s eyes. Yet, she forced herself not to show it because no one could say Fu Shinian’s choice was wrong.

So, all Su Mu could do was muster up a facade of indifference, claiming ’it doesn’t matter’.

When Qiao Yu was about to offer some words of comfort, Su Mu cut him off:

"How is Grandma now? Have the doctors found out why this happened?"

"Her condition has stabilized for now, but they haven’t found the cause. It might not be too promising, and Shinian has been staying with her because of this."

Su Mu nodded, lost in thought for a few seconds before suddenly standing up from the edge of the bed. Qiao Yu stood up as well:

"What are you going to do?"

Su Mu looked around blankly, seemingly unsure what her series of actions were for. It took a few seconds before she came to her senses and looked at Qiao Yu:

"I, I want to go see Grandma."

She said, moving towards the door, but Qiao Yu clearly saw that she hadn’t even put on her shoes.

Everyone knew Qiao Yu to be as gentle as jade, whether with family, friends, colleagues, or patients—that was the impression everyone had of him. But even such a man, Qiao Yu, lashed out at Su Mu, knowing he shouldn’t have but unable to control himself:

"After all Fu Shinian has done to you, why do you still want to see him? If you have time, why don’t you take better care of yourself? He doesn’t need you, nor does Grandma’s illness. Your presence will be of no help, only adding to the chaos."

Startled like a frightened rabbit, Su Mu was taken aback by Qiao Yu’s words. She looked up at him, taking a long time to digest what he had just said:

"I know my presence won’t help Grandma’s condition, but as a younger family member, shouldn’t I visit her? Shinian hasn’t done anything wrong, and his choice was right. Even if he hadn’t come to rescue me, haven’t I returned safely now? Neither he nor I are hurt; this is the best outcome."

"Do you really think that?"

Su Mu stiffened for a moment, then nodded in acknowledgment:

"Yes, I really do think so."

"You don’t feel wronged at all?"

Su Mu shook her head slightly:

"Not wronged. If I had known at the time, if I could have reached Shinian, I would have called him and told him not to come. If something had happened to the old lady while he was coming to save me, then there would be nothing left between me and Shinian. The only difference now is that it wasn’t me who made the decision for Shinian, but there’s no real difference."

After saying all this, Su Mu expected Qiao Yu to step aside. After all, she expressed all her thoughts clearly and lucidly, even detached from emotion. What reason did he have to stop her now? Was he worried she would cause trouble for Fu Shinian?

That’s not possible; she didn’t throw tantrums in the past, and she certainly wouldn’t now.

But Qiao Yu still didn’t move aside, standing stubbornly at the doorway like a statue. Su Mu felt his obstinance and was about to say more when he spoke, and what he said was shocking:

"You’re pregnant, and right now you’ve upset the pregnancy, you can’t just walk around."
