Chapter 269: Chapter 269: Misfortunes Never Come Singly
"Before I get what I want, I will take good care of Mrs. Fu on behalf of Mr. Fu," Song Zhengxian said with a faint smile as he glanced sideways at Su Mu. "I want three hundred million, two hundred and fifty million wired to the account I specify, and you bring the remaining fifty million in person. Do not call the police, do not bring anyone, or else I can’t guarantee you’ll see Mrs. Fu, whom you got back, ever again."
When Fu Shinian was still in school, he occasionally watched television where kidnapping plots were quite common. In the stories, the person paying the ransom would rarely cooperate with the police; instead, they would just follow the kidnapper’s demands. At the time, he didn’t understand such behavior.
Until he encountered it himself.
Only at this moment did he realize it wasn’t about non-cooperation or distrust; he simply didn’t care. He didn’t care about these external possessions, nor about who ultimately got the money. All he wanted was for the person he yearned for to return safely.
At the same time he hung up the phone, Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu simultaneously asked:
"How did it go?"
"Three hundred million, two hundred and fifty million wired to his designated account, and fifty million in cash to be delivered to him."
Ji Nanfeng: "Alone?"
Fu Shinian nodded and said no more. Just then, a message from Song Zhengxian came through; Song Yi had been waiting on the side. After briefly checking the message, Fu Shinian forwarded it to Song Yi:
"You handle the transfer, and also load the prepared cash into my car."
Song Yi couldn’t help feeling worried:
"You’re really going alone?"
"Yes," he replied without a moment’s hesitation. "Go do it."
Song Yi wanted to argue further, but found himself unable to say anything as it approached his lips. He knew, and so did Fu Shinian, that there was no need for him to say anything; at this point, Fu Shinian cared about nothing else but rescuing Su Mu; in fact, putting himself in Fu Shinian’s shoes, he could completely understand his actions.
Thus, he truly said no more and turned to get things done.
After Song Yi left, Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu exchanged glances, about to say something, when Fu Shinian’s phone rang again. He looked down to see that it was a call from Wen Han; without any hesitation, he answered, only to hear Wen Han’s voice through the receiver:
"I’ve located Su Mu."
Fu Shinian responded, "You don’t need to get involved."
Fu Shinian had sent those videos to Wen Han asking him to collaborate with the police just in case, fearing that Song Zhengxian wasn’t after the money. But now that Song Zhengxian had made the call, it was clear he was only interested in the money and nothing else. By paying him off, a disaster could be averted, and he accepted that. However, involving the police might alert Song Zhengxian and jeopardize Su Mu’s safety.
Rationally, he should trust the police, but what if? What if Song Zhengxian found out and harmed Su Mu?
That would be a loss no amount of money could recover.
If he had known it would end up like this, he would never have planted anyone near Song Zhengxian in the first place; why not just directly give him those two hundred and fifty million?
Wen Han, puzzled, asked:
"What do you mean by ’don’t get involved’? Are you planning to handle this alone?"
"Yes."
"Do you know the place? Has he contacted you?"
"Yes," Fu Shinian replied, not intending to elaborate further: "Wen Han, if you trust me, don’t get involved. I’ll bring Su Mu back safely and won’t let anything happen to myself either."
Wen Han failed to understand where Fu Shinian’s confidence stemmed from:
"What confidence do you have in handling this situation? The opponent is hidden, and you are exposed, holding Su Mu hostage. If he uses Su Mu to coerce you into doing something harmful to both yourself and Su Mu, what are you prepared to do? Will you comply with their demands?"
Without a moment’s hesitation, Fu Shinian responded:
"Harming me is permissible, but if it harms Su Mu, I will never agree."
"You..."
"Listen to me." Fu Shinian glanced at his watch, there was no time to waste: "I’m hanging up."
After hanging up the phone, Fu Shinian ignored Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu’s persuasions. In his view, every additional word of persuasion was another moment of suffering for Su Mu.
He suddenly felt an overwhelming sense of heartache for Su Mu, a pain so intense that he could barely breathe. Too many things had happened to her already: the injustices of the heavens, the ruggedness of fate, and all that he himself had inflicted upon her. She had calmly accepted everything, her strength and resilience likely even greater than what they had seen.
But just because she was understanding and strong, did it mean she had to continuously endure these burdens?
He wished he could return to a time before all these troubles, not wanting anything more than to be with her, to hold her.
He picked up the trench coat from the back of his chair and put it on, then started walking to the door. He had only taken a few steps when his phone rang again. He looked down and saw it was the old mansion’s number. Initially, he did not intend to answer it, but worrying that his grandmother might have heard some news, he answered the call. Unexpectedly, it was Auntie Wang’s voice, frantic and panicking:
"Mr. Fu, the old lady has fainted again, and we can’t wake her up. What should we do?"
In that moment, Fu Shinian could clearly see the two paths before him, one leading back to the old mansion to save his grandmother, the other to take the 50 million Song Yi had prepared for Su Mu’s rescue.
It seemed like Heaven enjoyed forcing people into a dilemma, the situation Fu Shinian faced was just like that classic question every woman might ask her partner: "If your mom and I both fell into a river, who would you save?"
If it were up to Fu Shinian, he would choose Su Mu, because the role of mother held no meaning for him. Even if he hadn’t realized his feelings for Su Mu, even previously, he would have chosen Su Mu. But now, the choice was between Su Mu and his grandmother.
Seeing him frozen in place, Ji Nanfeng and Qiao Yu did not understand what had happened. Qiao Yu stepped forward first and asked:
"What’s wrong? What happened now?"
Fu Shinian put away his phone and made his decision without any hesitation:
"Qiao Yu, go to the old mansion right now. The old lady is unconscious just like last time. Do not delay; take her to the hospital immediately."
"Why now?" Ji Nanfeng also slightly frowned before looking at Fu Shinian: "Are you going to save Su Mu?"
"The old lady is sick, and I’m not a doctor. Rushing back now wouldn’t be helpful, but Su Mu is different, she needs me. I believe if my grandmother were awake, she would also support my choice." He looked at Qiao Yu with earnest pleading: "Take good care of my grandmother for me."
Qiao Yu nodded firmly:
"Rest assured, I will make sure nothing happens to her."
Fu Shinian strode out of the office, while Qiao Yu immediately called the emergency department and hurried out, ensuring they headed to the old mansion as quickly as possible. Ji Nanfeng wanted to help Fu Shinian, since that was his area of expertise, but he also knew Fu Shinian would not agree, so he followed Qiao Yu to the old mansion.
In the underground parking garage, Song Yi helped load two suitcases filled with cash into the back seat of the car. Watching Fu Shinian hurry to the driver’s seat, he couldn’t help but speak up:
"Mr. Fu, let me come with you, at least for some support."
Fu Shinian waved his hand dismissively:
"No need, just manage the company for me."
With that, he got into the car, closed the door, and sped off.
