Chapter 246: Beautiful Dream
Chapter 246: Chapter 246: Beautiful Dream
"For seven years, it seemed like that was the only thing I did. I thought it would never change."
When Fu Shinian heard this, his heart inexplicably tightened. He looked at her retreating figure:
"Now, you don’t like me anymore?"
Su Mu shook her head, replying honestly:
"I still like you, after liking you for so long, it’s not possible to stop like flipping a switch and cutting the power instantly, but I don’t want to continue liking you anymore. Liking you is a very exhausting thing; I don’t want to go on with it. Just like I said earlier, I want to let myself go."
After a prolonged silence, Su Mu heard a single word: "Okay."
He agreed, but she felt no relief whatsoever. She thought she should say something, but before she could speak, Fu Shinian’s voice rang out again. He said:
"You don’t have to continue liking me, you can do whatever you want, I won’t be your burden anymore. I hope you can let yourself go, live a little easier, so..."
"In the time to come, I will be the one liking you."
Su Mu blinked, motionless.
"Perhaps only by standing where you once stood can I truly understand the roads you’ve traveled, the storms you’ve weathered. Maybe only if I start to like the you who will never like me back can I really comprehend the pain and suffering you’ve endured these past two years, but..." he said cautiously, "could we not get divorced for the time being, give me a trial period?"
Tonight, Fu Shinian indeed upended Su Mu’s every perception of him; he too could be soft, he could be anxious, and he could utter those humble words he once said himself.
Maybe it was only at this moment that Su Mu and Fu Shinian were truly together.
Returning to her room, Su Mu turned on her computer and uploaded all the photos from her camera to the cloud. While filtering through them, she saw the photo that had caused Fu Shinian to lose his focus earlier in the day, a photo of Wen Han with the Glass House in the background.
After some thought, she decided to delete the picture. It wasn’t about anyone else; it just didn’t feel right.
Continuing to filter, she was drawn to a photo she took earlier that day, the first one of her and Fu Shinian taken by Su Shiyue. She was a bit resistant, somewhat awkward, but Fu Shinian held her shoulders tightly, never letting go.
She had thought it was just a simple photo together, but now Su Mu noticed that in several of the photos, his gaze never strayed to the camera; it lingered on her, his lips always holding a smile, as if he was looking at someone who made him feel happy.
This was why Su Mu liked photography. If it weren’t for today’s pictures, she might never have known that Fu Shinian had once looked at her with such a fervent gaze.
Her heart, calm for so long, stirred slightly. She suddenly remembered what she told Fu Shinian just before returning to the room:
"Let me think about it."
Deciding to divorce had taken a lot of resolve, and to completely overturn that decision, she needed time to consider it thoroughly.
That night, Su Mu did not suffer from insomnia. At 2 a.m., she lay in bed and fell asleep within less than five minutes, then she had a dream.
In the dream, she was back at her 18-year-old self during the Spring Festival. Her parents were busy in the kitchen preparing the New Year’s Eve dinner while she took it upon herself to decorate the room all alone. From the kitchen, her parents’ cautious reminders reached her occasionally, and she sweetly responded with a "Okay" each time.
While hanging the lights, she suddenly missed her step and lost balance. On her way down, however, she fell into a warm embrace. Turning her head to look, she saw Fu Shinian’s face.
In her dream, he also had the freshly graduated, green look of a university student, yet his scolding was no less stern than now. He pulled Su Mu over to the window as if she were a primary school student, explaining to her bit by bit the dangers of her actions. And just as she looked up at him with a woeful expression, his voice suddenly disappeared, only a sigh remained, and then he took the un-hung lantern from her hands.
It wasn’t until her parents said they were ready for dinner that she realized how inappropriate it was for Fu Shinian to be at her house. As she urged him to leave quickly, he looked at her as if she were mentally challenged:
"We’re married, where do you want me to go?"
"Married?" She turned back to look at her parents, only to find that at some point her grandmother had also joined them, all three chatting away happily. Sensing Su Mu’s gaze, they simultaneously waved her over.
Su Mu walked over to the dining room in a daze and took her seat, with Fu Shinian sitting down beside her. He raised his glass and politely exclaimed, "Grandma, Dad, Mom, happy New Year."
Su Mu’s parents exchanged a smile and drained their glasses:
"Happy New Year."
When she awoke, there were tears at the corners of her eyes. She raised a hand to gently wipe them away, looking around the empty room with a momentary loss of focus, seemingly unable to distinguish between reality and dreams.
She spent a long time trying to accept that ’a dream is just a dream’ before getting out of bed. Before she could slip on her slippers, the door to the room was carefully pushed open. Su Mu turned around and saw Fu Shinian’s somewhat surprised expression:
"Awake?"
Lately, her sleep seemed to last into the afternoon and she rarely appeared awake at this time.
Su Mu quietly responded, but Fu Shinian clearly sensed something was amiss. He walked over and stood in front of Su Mu. Since she was looking down, he couldn’t see her face, so he crouched down and then frowned:
"Why are you crying?"
Her eyes were red, clearly showing signs of having cried.
Su Mu shook her head, got up, and walked over to the window to draw back the curtains. As the cold, clear light of winter streamed in she said:
"I had a dream."
"A nightmare?" Fu Shinian got up and looked at her silhouette.
"No," Su Mu said with a faint smile, "A very beautiful dream."
So beautiful she almost didn’t want to wake from it.
Fu Shinian didn’t press for details, but he probably guessed as much. He gave Su Mu a few seconds to compose herself before speaking:
"Qiao Yu and Ji Nanfeng are coming to pay New Year’s respects to Grandma, they’ll be here soon. Since you’re awake, why don’t you come with me?"
It was clear that Su Mu was not very interested, but Fu Shinian did not insist. Just when he was reminding her to rest well, Su Mu actually nodded: "Okay."
On the first day of the New Year, she should go down early to wish Grandma a happy New Year.
Fu Shinian looked at her for a few seconds and then smiled faintly.
