Chapter 236: Chapter 236: I Once Gave You My True Heart

When Su Mu arrived, Jiang Bei had already nearly finished packing. Su Mu looked at the small suitcase on the floor and spoke:

"Is that all you’re taking?"

"Yes, there’s an old saying ’poor at home, rich on the road’, but for me, I prefer to travel light. Whatever I lack, I can buy there," Jiang Bei said, his eyes filled with ceaseless concern as he looked at Su Mu. "How about you? Did you go back to the old house with Fu Shinian yesterday?"

Su Mu seated herself on the living room sofa:

"I have formally proposed a divorce to him."

Jiang Bei was surprised:

"You said it?"

"Yes, I said it," Su Mu smiled faintly: "I thought it would be difficult, but it turned out to be just five words ’Let’s get a divorce’. The moment those words came out of my mouth, I truly felt relieved. It’s only that I’m concerned about Grandma, and with the year-end approaching, I plan to wait until after the New Year to find a good opportunity to talk to her."

Jiang Bei nodded in agreement:

"I haven’t spent much time with the old lady, but that one time in the nursing home, I could really see that she genuinely cares about you from the bottom of her heart. It’s right that you consider her feelings. But what about Fu Shinian? Does he agree with the divorce?"

Su Mu was silent for a few seconds before shaking her head slightly:

"No, he said he disagreed."

"You need to understand, if Fu Shinian says he disagrees, then this matter can’t be resolved smoothly. After all, he nearly rules Shen City, and having a lawyer reject your case is just a matter of his saying so."

"I know." Su Mu sighed: "But I’m even clearer that I can’t continue living this way. Perhaps the path to divorce is difficult, but marriage is not easy to maintain either. I’ve already tried."

Jiang Bei took her hand:

"As long as you are mentally prepared, I support you."

Su Mu gave a faint smile and changed the subject:

"Let’s not talk about me anymore. You are leaving tomorrow, are you going to spend tonight with your uncle and aunt?"

"Yes, I should go back. My decision to study abroad was quite abrupt and it upset them a lot. If I don’t go back today, they might follow me abroad," Jiang Bei said, and then remembering something, he stood up, went to the entrance to get a set of keys, and handed them to Su Mu: "Here."

Su Mu looked puzzled:

"What are you doing?"

"I’ll be abroad for this year. Come and stay here, and help me look after the house," said Jiang Bei.

Su Mu, understanding Jiang Bei’s intention, smiled faintly:

"Do you really think I will be left with nothing after divorcing Fu Shinian? He is not a stingy man."

"Fu Shinian is generous, but you might not accept," Jiang Bei insisted, pressing the keys into her hand: "I know you’ve rented a studio and plan to live there often, but having an extra place is never a bad thing. My place will be empty for a year, who knows in what state I might find it upon returning? It’s better that you help me tidy up, so I don’t have to hire a cleaner."

Su Mu did not refuse any further and stood up to embrace Jiang Bei:

"Thank you."

Jiang Bei teased her with a laugh and continued packing. Su Mu occasionally helped while thinking of something, she asked:

"Does Rong Shen know you’re going abroad?"

"I doubt it," Jiang Bei responded indifferently. "He hasn’t contacted me since that incident, and I’m happy for the peace. However, Ji Nanfeng has heard the news and has been quite annoying these past few days."

"Since neither Rong Shen nor Ji Nanfeng is your type, make sure you don’t miss out on any opportunities while abroad. If you meet someone good, bring them back."

Jiang Bei burst out laughing and gave Su Mu a ’you really get me’ expression:

"If there really is someone I fancy, I’d even tie them up and bring them back!"

The next morning, Su Mu set out from the old house to see Jiang Bei off, but happened to run into Fu Shinian, who was also about to leave. He looked at her dressed to go out and asked:

"Going to the airport?"

With the old lady watching from behind, Su Mu couldn’t appear too eager and nodded:

"Yes."

"I’m also heading to the airport to drop you off."

"Susu." Su Mu was just about to refuse when she heard the old lady calling her from behind, "Don’t bother with him, I’ve already prepared a driver for you. He’s waiting in the yard; you don’t need to take his car."

Fu Shinian: "..."

Although Su Mu did not see Fu Shinian’s expression at that moment, she could imagine how stifled he must have felt hearing the old lady’s words, perhaps never having thought that one day he would fall out of favor in front of his own grandmother.

At this thought, she couldn’t help but smirk.

Seeing this, Fu Shinian felt even more depressed, his gaze at the old lady filled with helplessness.

Other grandmothers, even if they are good to their granddaughters-in-law, would still side with their grandsons behind the scenes, since blood ties do matter, but the Fu family’s old lady, Fu Shinian had never seen her consider his side, always seeming to undermine him at every turn.

Su Mu originally intended to refuse, but the old lady’s words made it difficult for her to voice her refusal. Although the matter of their divorce had to be eventually made clear to the old lady, it was still unspoken at the moment. After a few seconds of silence, she turned back and spoke to the old lady:

"Grandma, let’s not bother with that. I’ll just go with Shinian."

"Susu, don’t compromise for me or yourself; I feel the same way as you, I can’t stand this young man either."

Fu Shinian: "..."

Su Mu held back her laughter and looked at her grandmother:

"Grandma, you’re overthinking it."

"Whether I’m overthinking it or not doesn’t matter, what’s important is how you feel."

"I’m feeling quite good, Grandma."

The old lady smiled upon hearing this: "Okay, then I won’t delay you any longer, hurry on now, come back soon. I’ll ask Auntie Wang to prepare delicious food for your return."

"Alright."

The two left side by side, with Fu Shinian driving the car himself, Su Mu in the back seat.

Perhaps still mulling over the grandmother’s earlier words, Su Mu’s lips bore a faint smile, even alone in the car with Fu Shinian, which made him unable to resist glancing at her several times through the rearview mirror.

Su Mu noticed and restrained her smile, but Fu Shinian snorted lightly:

"Is it that funny?"

Su Mu’s gaze fell on the window: "It is pretty funny."

"What did you do to make the old lady treat you so well?"

"I didn’t do anything special." Su Mu turned her head to meet the eyes in the rearview mirror: "What I’ve done for Grandma, I’ve done the same for you, even more, in fact. The only difference is, Grandma could see my sincerity, whereas you always felt I had an ulterior motive."

Her gaze did not waver as she met Fu Shinian’s probing look. This assertive Su Mu somewhat stunned Fu Shinian; the old Su Mu would certainly not have dared to look at him this way. Although unwilling to believe it, the Su Mu of the past was truly never coming back.
