Chapter 217: The Only Blemish

Chapter 217: Chapter 217: The Only Blemish

Even though it was unbearable in the past, it was done in private. However, Fu Shinian’s actions undoubtedly exposed all of her private affairs to the public, something she could not and would not do.

"Why can’t I do this?" Fu Shinian stopped and turned back to look at her, "For you, it has always been about whether I want to, never about whether I can. Your pride, dignity, and reputation were all ruined by yourself. I spared your life solely out of respect for the national law, which has nothing to do with gender and even less to do with you."

The moment the door opened, Qin Nianwan’s hysterical voice rang out from behind:

"What about the past, before I went through all these filthy incidents, when it was just you and me? Don’t you care at all about that time?"

The past? Fu Shinian sneered:

"Qin Nianwan, you have to believe that the time I spent with you is the only stain in my life. If possible, I wish I had never met you."

After closing the door and shutting out Qin Nianwan’s screams, Fu Shinian walked away, followed by Song Yi, who had been waiting quietly in the corridor:

"Everything is arranged over there; we can head there anytime."

"As soon as possible."

"Yes."

When Jiang Bei’s call came through, Su Mu was about to go to the hospital to find her, but learning that she did not have the night shift tonight, Su Mu directly invited her out for dinner and also called Wei Shaoqin.

When Su Mu arrived at the designated place, Jiang Bei had not yet arrived. She declined the waiter’s kind offer to be seated in the private room first and waited near the bar for Jiang Bei. Although it was past regular meal times, barbecue was still a suitable food even at midnight. More customers came in one after another before Jiang Bei finally arrived tardily. The indoor temperature instantly melted the snow on her shoulders. Su Mu stood up from her seat and went to the private room with her.

Sitting across from Su Mu, Jiang Bei first scanned their surroundings:

"Why didn’t we go to the usual spot?"

Su Mu replied with a faint smile:

"I wanted to drink."

Jiang Bei’s gaze fixed on Su Mu’s face: "What’s wrong with you?"

Su Mu, who hadn’t planned on hiding anything from Jiang Bei, spoke frankly: "I just returned from Portugal."

"Portugal?" Jiang Bei frowned, instantly understanding, "Did you go to find Chen Huifang?"

Su Mu nodded and shared everything that had happened in the past two days with Jiang Bei, including her visit to Qin Nianwan. Jiang Bei, unable to wait for Su Mu to finish, stood up from her chair angrily:

"Why didn’t you tell me sooner?"

Su Mu reached out to calm her down but Jiang Bei shrugged her off:

"Don’t touch me, I can’t calm down right now. How come I didn’t notice that you’ve been getting bolder? I won’t say anything about you going to Portugal to find Chen Huifang, since that woman only eyes money and wouldn’t risk her neck. But to confront Qin Nianwan alone? Aren’t you afraid she’d destroy you?"

"I’m not afraid," Su Mu looked at Jiang Bei, "There’s nothing left for her to hurt."

Seeing Su Mu like this, Jiang Bei felt an unexpected pang of heartache and sat down beside her, firmly stating:

"We can’t let this go. I can’t swallow this injustice. Don’t try to persuade me—it’s not just for you, it’s for my brother."

Su Mu smiled slightly:

"I’m not trying to persuade you to do anything. Whatever you want to do, go ahead. I won’t object."

Jiang Bei nodded her head, immediately starting to think of ways to deal with Qin Nianwan. Su Mu interrupted her thoughts:

"There’s no rush. Take your time. I haven’t even asked you what you meant by the text you sent me this morning."

Jiang Bei paused briefly, then her expression grew somber:

"You were right."

"Which statement was correct?"

"Rong Shen."

Su Mu furrowed her brows. "Did he come looking for you again?"

"Not just again, but every day. How can a mob boss be so free? If he’s not showing up on my way to work, then it’s when I’m heading home. It’s more annoying than Ji Nanfeng."

"But Rong Shen isn’t Ji Nanfeng, not so easy to deal with. What do you want to do?"

Jiang Bei was silent for a few seconds:

"I want to go abroad."

Although she seemed indifferent about most things, Jiang Bei saw this matter very clearly. She was no match for Rong Shen, and he was not someone she could afford to provoke. Every look and action he took toward her was akin to watching intending prey, relentless in achieving his goals.

But, Rong Shen’s world was not one Jiang Bei wished to enter.

"Abroad?"

"Yes, the institute currently has slots for an international program, lasting a year. I plan to go."

"When?"

"Before the year ends. It’s soon."

The news came so suddenly that Su Mu found it hard to accept at first. Yet, she understood it was the right choice for Jiang Bei. Perhaps a year after her departure, Rong Shen might have even foregotten about her.

Although Su Mu felt this was unlikely.

"It’s good that you’ve decided." Su Mu held Jiang Bei’s hand. "I support you."

"I knew you would, but if I leave, you won’t have anyone to confide in, especially now that things with Fu Shinian have turned out this way. Have you thought about the future?"

Su Mu nodded:

"I have... I’m ready to file for divorce."

Jiang Bei fell silent, wanting to say something. Seeing the resignation on Su Mu’s face, she realized that Su Mu had given it thorough consideration. Any consolation would be ineffective, and with a sigh:

"I never imagined it would come to this."

"It was wrong from the start." Su Mu said flatly.

"What was wrong?" Wei Shaoqin entered, hearing Su Mu’s remark and couldn’t help but speak up, "What mistake did you make? Do you need my help?"

Wei Shaoqin’s arrival shifted Su Mu’s gaze onto him, her vaguely mocking expression gave Wei Shaoqin a chill, slowing his motion of pulling out the chair:

"Why do I feel like I shouldn’t be here?"

Jiang Bei hadn’t noticed Su Mu’s expression, only focusing on Wei Shaoqin: "Where have you been the last few days, why couldn’t your phone be reached?"

"Don’t ask." Wei Shaoqin avoided Su Mu’s gaze as he took his seat: "The fight I got into the other day, the police came to take a statement at my place, just when my dad was there. He grounded me immediately."

Jiang Bei laughed:

"No way, you’re that old and still getting grounded like a little kid?"

"Right?" Wei Shaoqin seemed to find a kindred spirit and said, "That’s exactly what I protested to my dad, but he simply retorted with ’no matter your age, you are still my son,’ and shut me down. I could only come out after he returned to the United States."

As Wei Shaoqin spoke, his gaze inadvertently fell on Su Mu’s face, noticing her unchanging expression he voiced his confusion:

"Madam, what have I done to offend you this time?"
