Chapter 211: He Once Saved Her Life

Chapter 211: Chapter 211: He Once Saved Her Life

Ji Nanfeng’s words pulled Fu Shinian’s memories all the way back to seven years ago. He vaguely recalled that it did indeed happen; it was merely because his grandmother prayed to Buddha, hoping that heaven would spare his grandfather a little longer. Though Shinian believed in science and did not think his grandmother’s actions would help his grandfather, who was gravely ill, his feelings mirrored hers—they both hoped for his grandfather’s recovery.

That night, after escorting his grandmother home, he passed by the emergency room hallway and saw a little girl covered in blood being wheeled out. He initially thought she was headed for surgery, but the nurses merely left her in the hallway and ignored her. Puzzled, he stopped in his tracks, interjecting for the first time:

"Why leave her here?"

"No money, no ID; there’s nothing we can do."

To this day, Shinian could still remember the nurse’s inhuman expression and tone.

Perhaps influenced by his grandmother’s recent actions, he paid the hospital bills on the spot and even signed the surgical consent form. At that moment, he thought about establishing a hospital owned by the Fu Corporation, ensuring that no one brought to the hospital would be denied treatment due to lack of funds.

He didn’t wait for the outcome, but later heard by chance that the little girl’s surgery was very successful.

It might have been a coincidence, but his grandfather’s condition improved after that night, and he was discharged from the hospital half a month later. However, the disease did not let go of him; Grandfather Fu passed away a year later, leaving Shinian and his grandmother forever.

If Su Mu initially determined it was Fu Shinian based on the signature on the surgery consent form and the payment receipt, then in fact, there was nothing wrong.

Qiao Yu looked at Fu Shinian:

"Your fates really aren’t shallow."

After a two-hour flight, when they landed at Portugal International Airport at ten in the evening, both Su Mu and Wen Han had only carry-ons and didn’t need to wait for their luggage. Wen Han wanted to head to the hotel first, but Su Mu had other plans:

"You go back to the hotel; I want to check out the casino."

The casino city was most bustling at night, and Su Mu did not want to waste the evening.

Upon hearing this, Wen Han looked at her:

"You should rest a bit first."

Su Mu shook her head, steadfast:

"I’m not tired."

Even if she returned to the hotel, she wouldn’t be able to sleep. She hadn’t had a good night’s sleep at Bishui Yuntian these past few days; she didn’t believe she would forget everything and become carefree upon arriving in Portugal.

Seeing Su Mu’s demeanor, Wen Han no longer advised her. He simply said:

"I’ll accompany you then."

Wen Han’s intention was out of concern for Su Mu’s well-being. Since she insisted on going to find someone in the casino first, naturally, Wen Han would accompany her.

Su Mu nodded and led the way out of the airport.

During the cab ride to the casino, Su Mu was very quiet, nestled in the back seat of the car, gazing at the neon lights outside the window, so silent she seemed almost non-existent. Wen Han, sitting beside her, could clearly sense a difference from the Su Mu of the past.

There’s no true empathy in the world; even though he might understand Su Mu, he could never fully comprehend her emotions and state of mind.

The impact of that incident, coupled with later knowing that Fu Shinian was informed, may have left her emotionally fragile.

In truth, she probably understood better than anyone that even if she found Chen Huifang and learned of the real mastermind, it wouldn’t change what had happened. But she still wanted to do it.

Because it was the only thing she could do now.

There are many casinos in Portugal, and neither had arranged for someone to follow Chen Huifang beforehand, so now they could only search from one casino to the next. The two got out of the car in the busiest part of the casino area. Su Mu looked up at the noisy street without any reaction, simply stating:

"Let’s go."

After searching four casinos consecutively and not spotting Chen Huifang, the time had already approached 1 am. Seeing that Su Mu was about to head to the next one, Wen Han eventually spoke up to stop her:

"Are you planning to search them all tonight?"

"Yes."

Her resolute tone told Wen Han that she had made up her mind, and no matter what he said, it would be futile.

Wen Han looked at her and finally did not argue back, but glanced around and said:

"Even if you want to search, you need to eat first. You won’t be able to keep going like this."

Su Mu opened her mouth to refuse, but Wen Han, without further discussion, took hold of her wrist. Su Mu tried to jerk her hand free as though she had been electrocuted, but unexpectedly Wen Han gripped it even tighter. He turned his gaze back to her:

"What are you afraid of?"

Su Mu did not look at him:

"Let me go."

"Come eat with me."

Su Mu silently compromised, knowing all too well that if she did not agree, he would undoubtedly not let go.

Wen Han released Su Mu’s hand, and she immediately tucked her hands into the pockets of her clothes, seemingly afraid of making any further inappropriate actions. Wen Han suppressed a bitter smile within himself and said nothing, proceeding directly to a nearby restaurant.

It was late at night by then, but the restaurant was still bustling. They chose a spot by the street corner and sat down, Wen Han handed the menu to Su Mu:

"What would you like to eat?"

Su Mu shook her head and handed it back: "Anything is fine."

Wen Han did not press her further and simply ordered two signature combos. After the waiter left, Wen Han poured a glass of water for Su Mu, who held it in her hand and thanked him. Afterwards, she remained silent.

"In fact, you can vent your anger at me."

At his words, Su Mu looked up at Wen Han, whose eyes were serious yet calm:

"You’ve been holding it together all this time, haven’t you? Continuing like this is not good for your health."

"Even if I’m harboring a fire inside, why should I vent it on you? You’re a victim too in this matter."

"Because I’m a man."

Whether man or woman, in Su Mu’s eyes, both Wen Han and herself were victims.

Perhaps men can be more philosophical about these things and find it easier to cope than women, but Su Mu wouldn’t blame Wen Han for that reason. He wasn’t the planner or executor of the event; even if she blamed herself, she couldn’t hold him responsible.

Choosing not to see him again felt unnecessary since their only connection beyond Wen Shaoyuan was minimal. However, she hadn’t expected him to follow her to Portugal. Su Mu understood that coming here was a difficult matter for him as an active-duty soldier.

"In the eyes of the law, are victims treated leniently because they are male?"

Wen Han was taken aback:

"No."

"So why do you feel you suffered less than I did? In reality, it’s all the same, at least to me."

Wen Han wanted to say something, but just then, the waiter brought over the meals they had ordered. Su Mu said indifferently:

"Let’s eat."
