Chapter 201: Chapter 201: He who knows the times is a hero.
After Jiang Bei said those words, Rong Shen had yet to react. Instead, those behind him were the first to stir, simultaneously stepping forward with malice and caution written on their faces, which made Jiang Bei feel that she might not even know how she was going to die.
Such an event, however, did not occur. Rong Shen slightly lifted his hand, stopping all movement from his subordinates. Although Jiang Bei was not infatuated, she had to admit that his command over the crowd was quite striking. He looked at Jiang Bei, slightly raising an eyebrow:
"Do we know each other?"
That was true, she had saved him in the shopping center’s underground parking lot ten days ago while he was unconscious, and by the time he had woken up, he had already been taken to the hospital ward and was no longer her patient. And then the police took over, leaving her with no chance to see him. It was normal that he didn’t recognize her, but he should have at least heard of her.
"Roughly ten days ago, I saved you in the shopping center’s underground parking lot. Do you remember?"
Rong Shen stared at Jiang Bei for a few seconds:
"It was you?"
"What, a hitman sent to my home and you still don’t recognize me? That’s a bit unreasonable, isn’t it?"
Jiang Bei’s words caused Rong Shen to slightly furrow his brows. Perhaps at first, he hadn’t grasped the meaning behind Jiang Bei’s words, but he soon caught on, slightly turning to glance at his men behind him. One of them stepped forward and whispered something in his ear. Jiang Bei, not understanding the situation, could only wait.
Yet the first thing they said after conversing was:
"It’s too cold outside, shall we talk inside?"
"How would I know if you won’t just take me inside and kill me?"
Rong Shen curled the corner of his lip:
"Before I appeared, weren’t you about to force your way in? You weren’t afraid of dying then, so what are you afraid of now?"
Without giving Jiang Bei a chance to respond, Rong Shen stepped inside. Jiang Bei had no other choice, especially since Rong Shen’s men were eyeing her with predatory gazes, making it seem impossible for her to leave even if she wanted to. Later on, she realized that Rong Shen’s words were not wrong; she had initially planned to break in. Now that the door was open, it seemed there was no reason not to enter.
Rong Shen led Jiang Bei to the private room he was currently in. After seating himself on the sofa, he looked at Jiang Bei, who stood off to the side:
"Prefer to stand?"
Jiang Bei took a seat: "Not particularly."
Rong Shen chuckled, and Jiang Bei spoke directly:
"I’m not involved with the underworld, so I don’t know what your rules are, but I’ve seen plenty of movies. I know that a life debt is held in the highest regard, repayment for a life saved is paramount—that’s an unspoken rule on your streets. Yet, in your case, it seems I need to revise my understanding, even changing my worldview. I didn’t expect the underworld to adopt the tactic of biting the hand that feeds. Is it that the movies are too naïve, or is the world just that dark and I’m simply too ignorant?"
Rong Shen looked at Jiang Bei, silent for so long that she began to feel uncomfortable:
"Why are you staring at me like that?"
"You’re the first person who dares to speak to me this way."
Jiang Bei huffed twice, not saying anything, but that didn’t mean Rong Shen didn’t understand what those huffs meant—they were her thinking he was too arrogant and not taking him seriously.
Rong Shen smiled without a word, then called for Qin Meng outside:
"Who was the one who suggested making a move earlier?"
Qin Meng glanced at Jiang Bei, instantly grasping Rong Shen’s meaning. After all, during the time Rong Shen wasn’t there, everybody knew what Jiang Bei looked like. He replied:
"Yang Li and Zhou Wu."
"Go."
With a single word, Qin Meng nodded slightly and left the room.
As the door closed, Jiang Bei’s eyes landed on Rong Shen’s face. She hadn’t spoken yet when she saw him stand up and step toward her. Her tension built, and her hand, hidden behind her back, clenched the dagger even tighter. Rong Shen stood in front of her, leaning forward with his hands on the back of the sofa behind her, limiting her freedom to the small space directly in front of his chest in the enormous room.
She looked up at him, her gaze cold:
"What are you doing?"
Rong Shen watched her intently:
"I still don’t know your name."
Jiang Bei snorted coldly, "My name, surely your men all know it, right?"
"They are them, I am me," Rong Shen looked at her, his gaze heavy: "Tell me."
Jiang Bei didn’t speak, and Rong Shen bent over even lower, until there was no room left for Jiang Bei to retreat. He reached out to touch her face, but was startled by the sudden appearance of a gleaming blade. He merely shifted slightly to the side, skillfully dodging it, then followed by seizing Jiang Bei’s wrist, twisting forcefully until the dagger dropped from her palm. He caught it effortlessly and, without turning his head, flung it away; the weapon drove straight into the solid wooden side table behind them.
Jiang Bei was not discouraged; she aimed a kick at Rong Shen’s lower body, but before her leg could fully extend, Rong Shen had already anticipated the move. Stepping aside to avoid Jiang Bei’s attack, he quickly grasped her ankle, a faint smile playing on his lips. In the next second, under Jiang Bei’s astonished gaze, he forcefully parted her legs and positioned himself between them.
Having practiced Sanda since she was young, Jiang Bei didn’t feel pain from such a move. At that moment, however, she felt nothing but humiliation. He was between her legs in an ambiguous posture, and he caught her wrists with ease, lifting them above her head. The pressure he applied with his body was so great that her legs were rendered useless.
Jiang Bei glared at him:
"Let go!"
"Your name."
"Your granny."
Rong Shen’s lips curled up slightly, his gaze slowly drifting from Jiang Bei’s face to her chest: "Which granny?"
"You..."
"One should know when to show weakness. Do you think with your current posture that you have anything to argue with me?"
Jiang Bei looked at him, and as she was about to retort, she suddenly thought of Rong Shen’s gunshot wound, which was just above the lower back. Although she was pinned down by him, touching his wound was not difficult for Jiang Bei. She smiled lightly, and before Rong Shen could comprehend the meaning of her smile, Jiang Bei’s foot had accurately struck his injured spot.
As expected, Rong Shen released his hold on Jiang Bei. She took the opportunity to get away from the sofa and stood in a more open space, on full alert.
After the initial shock of pain had subsided, Rong Shen came to his senses and looked at Jiang Bei coldly:
"Do you think you’re a match for me?"
"How would I know without trying?"
"How about a bet?"
Jiang Bei watched him, silent.
"If you win, I’ll let you do as you please with me, but if not... you’ll tell me your name."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Bei raised her eyebrows slightly and dropped all her guards:
"Jiang Bei."
Rong Shen was puzzled: "What?"
"My name, Jiang Bei."
Rong Shen looked at her: "You concede?"
"I don’t think so. I call my actions, ’The wise adapt themselves to the situation.’"
