Chapter 189: Chapter 189: I, Too, Have a Temper

The boss responded and quickly came over, but to the surprise of the three, he held a hot drink amongst the bottles of alcohol and then, under everyone’s puzzled gaze, placed it in front of Su Mu. Wei Shaoqin looked at Su Mu and then turned to the boss, smiling slightly:

"Big brother, we didn’t order this, did we?"

"You didn’t this time, but it was prearranged before."

Jiang Bei: "When was it arranged? Did we arrange it?"

"No." The boss smiled, his gaze softening as he looked at Su Mu, "The last time you came here with your boyfriend, he told me when he came to pay that from now on, whenever you come, I shouldn’t give you alcohol, fearing you’d get into trouble. Not only did he say that, but he also paid a fair amount in advance for your meals. Considering you hadn’t come in for a while, I was actually worried. I even thought about placing an ad to give the money back."

The boss’s words jogged Su Mu’s memory. On the night she returned from her business trip, she had been so exhausted she passed out before dinner and didn’t wake up until late at night. She was told that Auntie Wang hadn’t left her any food downstairs and wouldn’t allow her to cook, and just when she thought she’d have to go hungry all night, he took her out for dinner.

That was the first time he had taken her out alone, and it was to eat.

However, Su Mu remembered that Fu Shinian didn’t eat anything at the food stall that time. Instead, he just kept her company, watching her eat a lot, and he was the one who settled the bill in the end. At that time, Su Mu was curious about what he had said to the boss, but he never told her, and she never thought it would be this.

Su Mu said thanks, and the boss left with a cheerful laugh. Jiang Bei and Wei Shaoqin’s gazes, however, remained on Su Mu’s face without shifting, with Jiang Bei speaking first:

"When did that happen?"

Su Mu smiled:

"It seems Fu Shinian isn’t entirely indifferent to you after all, he even pays attention to these details, reminding the boss not to let you drink alcohol. Was it because you got drunk last time and didn’t go home?"

Wei Shaoqin seemed to remember something too:

"The time you drank with me?"

Su Mu smiled, which was as good as acknowledging it.

"Before, I thought you were just comforting us by saying Fu Shinian was good to you. Now it seems he’s not all bad."

Jiang Bei didn’t care about that and straightaway took the hot drink away from Su Mu:

"Don’t worry about that. He’s not here today anyway, and you can’t really be so obedient to not drink at all. We had an agreement, today no one is going home until we’re drunk."

Listening to Jiang Bei finish, Su Mu looked slightly conflicted. Jiang Bei saw right away what she was thinking and was about to scold her when Su Mu got up first, picked up the hot drink Jiang Bei had moved away, and smiled:

"I’ll just drink this."

Jiang Bei gave her a frustrated look but didn’t press further, clinking glasses directly with Wei Shaoqin:

"I think from now on, you’re my real brother. Su Mu can step aside."

Wei Shaoqin raised an eyebrow:

"Fine, we’ll scorn those who cast aside their friends for the opposite sex."

"Absolutely! Firmly scorned."

"Cheers!"

"Cheers!"

Both of them drained their glasses in one gulp.

Su Mu sat to the side, watching the two of them down one glass after another, while she occasionally sipped her hot drink. She cradled the hot beverage carefully in her palms, feeling the warmth seep through to every cell in her body.

She couldn’t help but wonder; although she held the most ordinary drink sold everywhere, it tasted like nothing could be better when it reached her heart.

Jiang Bei and Wei Shaoqin were completely letting go, getting tipsy over and over again. Every time the owner came over, he would glance at Su Mu to make sure she wasn’t drinking before he continued to serve alcohol. Su Mu had no choice but to assure the owner she definitely wouldn’t drink, and he responded with a chuckle:

"It’s not that I want to control you, it’s just that I see your boyfriend really cares about you. That feeling of knowing you’re out drinking but can’t be by your side, I’ve experienced it too; it’s indeed quite distressing, so I agreed to his request."

"I know, thank you."

If it had been any other time, Su Mu thought she would have been overjoyed to hear such news, but after what she had been through, the kindness of Fu Shinian felt like a mountain pressing down on her chest, leaving her so suffocated she couldn’t breathe.

By the time they left the barbecue stall, it was already past midnight. Two men in black had taken over in shifts; it was clear that Ji Nanfeng intended to protect Jiang Bei around the clock. In this respect, Su Mu found herself looking at him in a new light. Perhaps his interest in Jiang Bei was just a whim, but such whim wasn’t entirely off-putting.

Wei Shaoqin’s car was parked at the street corner, and Jiang Bei had also driven here, but given how much both of them had drunk, it was clear they were in no state to drive. Su Mu had intended to have the men in black drive Wei Shaoqin home, but they flatly refused without a second thought:

"Our orders are to ensure Miss Jiang’s safety and to never let her out of our sight. The safety of others is not within our scope of protection."

Whether Wei Shaoqin was truly drunk or faking it, he scoffed at this remark:

"What a joke, do I need them to protect me?"

Su Mu hesitated, "Can you follow us in his car then? That way, you wouldn’t be leaving her out of your sight."

The men in black nodded:

"That would be acceptable."

First, Su Mu helped Jiang Bei into a car, then went to assist the staggering Wei Shaoqin, but he brushed her off with a wave:

"I don’t need your help."

Su Mu didn’t insist and simply walked beside him, offering support only when he was about to fall. After steadying him, she would let go. When she opened the back door of the car for him to get in, Wei Shaoqin suddenly halted, steadying the swirling alcohol in his stomach before turning to look at Su Mu:

"Are you... really doing well?"

Su Mu looked at him and nodded, "Really, I’m not lying to you."

Wei Shaoqin let out a light laugh as the cold air turned his breath into mist:

"You don’t have to pretend in front of me. I’m not going to turn back and chase after you again, I have my pride too, you know."

Su Mu smiled slightly:

"I’m not pretending, I really am doing well. And now, Fu Shinian is very good to me."

"Are you sure?"

"Sure."

Seeing Su Mu’s firm expression, Wei Shaoqin also smiled, raising his hand as if to touch her hair. But as his hand neared, he paused and pulled back. Su Mu glanced sideways at his hand, and he instantly withdrew:

"Alright, as long as you’re well, that’s what matters. Otherwise, I would definitely have to go set off fireworks to celebrate. Who told you to not choose someone as good as me back then, and to go for that heartless guy instead? But you no longer have that chance, I am destined to be the man you can’t have, even if you want me."
