Chapter 160: The Older, the Wiser
Chapter 160: Chapter 160: The Older, the Wiser
Everyone’s gaze suddenly focused on Fu Shinian’s face.
In fact, even if Su Mu had hit hard, after two hours of icing, the mark had already faded a lot; if one didn’t look closely, it was hardly noticeable. Yet Su Shiyue had pinpointed it precisely. Su Mu didn’t feel guilty, but in front of the old lady, she felt somewhat uncomfortable.
As she wondered whether to admit it or not, Fu Shinian looked at Su Shiyue and spoke softly,
"What’s wrong with my face?"
Su Shiyue thought he would explain, but instead, he retorted with a question, leaving her stunned. Before she could say anything, Fu Shinian turned to the grandmother and asked,
"Grandma, do you see anything different about my face?"
The old lady shook her head:
"It looks quite normal to me, although it might be that the heating is too high in the room, making your face a bit red."
Fu Shinian then looked towards Su Mu:
"What about you? Do you think there’s something wrong with my face?"
Su Mu, looking at him, thought he was detestable. No one knew better than her how this ’slight redness’ had come about, yet he deliberately used this topic to question her. With calm composure, Su Mu shook her head:
"No."
Fu Shinian gave a light smile and took off his coat:
"The old lady is right; I do feel a bit hot."
After dinner, the grandmother and Fu Shinian talked for a while before she went to rest. Su Mu had been sitting quietly by her side, and seeing that the grandmother had also gone to rest, she thought of finding an excuse to leave. However, Fu Shinian made a phone call that lasted nearly an hour, during which she couldn’t get a word in.
Seeing that Su Mu looked like she was about to leave, Su Shiyue proactively took a seat in front of her:
"Sister-in-law, do you need to leave? It seems my brother’s conference call won’t finish anytime soon. Why don’t you go ahead, and I’ll pass along the message for you later."
Su Mu looked at Su Shiyue, but did not speak.
Su Shiyue gave a shallow smile:
"Sister-in-law doesn’t trust me."
"Should I trust you? It hasn’t been that long, and you’ve already forgotten what you did back then?" Su Mu chuckled lightly, "It’s okay if you forget; I remember it all for you."
"What are you trying to do, sister-in-law? Even if I was thoughtless and offended you back then, in the end, you didn’t lose out at Wei Shaoqin’s hands, did you? Besides, we are family. Even if just for my brother’s sake, you should be more magnanimous."
Su Mu suddenly found this version of Su Shiyue quite interesting. She really didn’t know what she had experienced in England over these past few months to have changed so much. The words she spoke were not as blunt and brainless as before, always seeming to carry another layer of meaning.
"I have already shown you leniency once, remember?" Su Mu looked at her, "The grove outside Bishui Yuntian, the things you had done to me there."
"It’s been too long, I don’t remember it that well."
Su Mu lightly curved the corners of her lips but said nothing more. She was too tired today and didn’t want to continue the guessing game with Su Shiyue, wasting her mood. However, she truly didn’t want to wait anymore, so she took out her phone and sent Wei Shaoqin a message asking him to come pick her up.
Wei Shaoqin seemed to have been waiting for her message, replying almost instantly: "Will be there shortly."
But plans can never keep up with changes. A few minutes later, Su Mu rose from her seat, but before she could take a step, she saw Auntie Wang hurry out of the grandmother’s room, her face filled with panic:
"Madam, the old lady has started to run a fever again."
Su Mu was startled, taking quick strides toward the old lady. Even Fu Shinian, who was on the phone by the window, abruptly ended his call and walked over, already dialing Qiao Yu to hurry over.
The old lady’s face was very red, and her forehead felt very hot. Su Mu stood by her side, her mind in disarray. Hearing footsteps behind her, she turned and asked,
"Have you notified the doctor?"
Fu Shinian nodded:
"Qiao Yu is on his way."
Su Mu responded and turned back to look at her grandmother, still with a face full of worry.
Qiao Yu arrived quickly, but after initially examining the old lady, he seemed momentarily stunned. His gaze at Fu Shinian also carried a meaningful look, and Su Mu’s heart was suddenly hoisted up:
"What does that expression mean? What’s wrong with Grandma?"
Qiao Yu pressed his lips together and only after a few seconds did he speak, addressing Su Mu:
"Su Mu, you go out and fetch some water for the old lady. And bring back some alcohol. She’s sleeping now, so it’s best to start with physical cooling first."
Su Mu could tell that Qiao Yu had something to discuss privately with Fu Shinian. Although she was very worried about her grandmother, it wasn’t a good time to insist on anything. She complied and left the room first.
Only Fu Shinian, Qiao Yu, and the lying old lady remained in the room when Qiao Yu finally let out a light chuckle:
"Whose idea was it?"
Fu Shinian slightly furrowed his brow, not yet having a chance to say anything, when the old lady lying on the bed sat up directly, her face beaming with smiles, nothing like the unresponsive patient from moments before:
"Mine."
Qiao Yu looked helplessly at the old lady:
"Grandma, you’re going to scare someone to death doing this. I raced over from the hospital, completing a 1-hour journey in just 20 minutes. Aren’t you afraid I’d drive too fast and meet with a mishap?"
The old lady fearfully patted Qiao Yu’s hand:
"Grandma knows she was wrong. Don’t be mad. But Grandma also knows you’re sensible, not reckless like Nanfeng. Otherwise, how come it’s you who ended up as a doctor, not him? Grandma trusts you."
"That doesn’t mean you can joke like this."
The old lady smiled faintly:
"There won’t be a next time."
Fu Shinian stood aside, his hanging heart finally relaxing. He watched their exchange quietly. Once their discussion seemed to have paused, he leisurely spoke up:
"Old lady, what were you doing?"
"What was I doing? I did it for you!" The old lady shot him a piercing glance: "What have you done to my Susu again? How could a nice girl like her fall for you? She looks like she has lost so much weight, she’s practically skin and bones. You both manage to keep your stories straight, but unfortunately for you, your grandmother isn’t blind."
Qiao Yu raised an eyebrow, looking at Fu Shinian, who looked quite fatigued and pinched the bridge of his nose, not saying a word:
"Although you both walked in hand-in-hand today, it looked as though you both couldn’t wait to be eighty meters away from each other. When you’re around, Su Mu goes to help out in the kitchen, and she only comes to talk to me when you’re busy. She doesn’t even dare to look at you. What on earth did you do to her?"
Qiao Yu couldn’t help but sigh: Ginger is still the spiciest after all.
No one who knew the inside story had spoken a word to the old lady about anything between Fu Shinian and Su Mu, yet she managed to guess quite accurately.
