Chapter 146 You Look Like Her
Chapter 146: Chapter 146 You Look Like Her
Jiang Bei didn’t let Wei Shaoqin disturb Su Mu and Wen Han, not because she actually wanted to matchmake them, although she had entertained that fantasy before. But she also knew how unrealistic such a thought was. Now, she wanted Su Mu and Wen Han to spend some time alone together because she inexplicably felt that Su Mu would become inexplicably calm by Wen Han’s side.
That kind of calm was different from her usual calmness; it always seemed to emanate from deep within her heart.
On the sofa in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, Wen Han and Su Mu’s gazes were constantly on Wen Shaoyuan, who was running around outside, enjoying the natural scenery. The smiles on their lips were the same, as if the child they were looking at was their own. To those who didn’t know them, they certainly looked like a rare and happy family of three.
Rare moments of peace and serenity.
Remembering what Wei Shaoqin had said, Su Mu spoke softly:
"I thought Shaoyuan would be unhappy."
It was a sentence that seemed out of the blue, but Wen Han instantly understood. His gaze shifted from Wen Shaoyuan back to Su Mu, and he saw the warm winter sunlight shining on her face, making her skin seem almost transparently white.
With a slight smile:
"Xiaobei is actually not as fragile as we imagine. Many things we think he doesn’t understand, he actually already knows."
"Has he never mentioned his mother?"
Wen Han shook his head, his gaze returning to Wen Shaoyuan:
"Of course, he asked when he was younger, since children his age all have both a father and a mother, and he was the only one from a single parent. But in the last two years, he really hasn’t asked again. Maybe he has come to accept this reality, or maybe he knows that even if he asks again, it wouldn’t make a mother appear."
The smile on Su Mu’s lips faded and her gaze began to drift:
"Do you miss her?"
Wen Han seemed caught off guard by Su Mu’s question, hesitating for a few seconds. Su Mu realized that she shouldn’t have asked that question and smiled apologetically:
"I’m sorry, I just..."
Wen Han interrupted her apology with a slight smile:
"It’s okay, it’s not a taboo question. Even when facing Shaoyuan, I have never deliberately avoided it, so just now, you and Xiaobei didn’t need to be so cautious in front of Wei Shaoqin. Although Xiaobei is young and might find it difficult to understand some things, Zhuo Qing is after all his mother. He has the right to know what kind of person his mother was and should remember her. I’m also prepared to tell him everything about his mother when he’s a bit older."
Su Mu was somewhat surprised but agreed:
"You are a good father."
Wen Han chuckled and shook his head:
"I indeed want to be a good father, but the debt I feel towards Shaoyuan over the years has made me realize I’m actually not. Instead, it’s you who, despite having no blood relation with Shaoyuan, have provided him with the warmth that should come from family. He told me about the words you said to him the day he ran away from home, I’ve never had a chance to thank you for those words."
Time had passed so long that Su Mu had almost forgotten what she had actually said to Wen Shaoyuan that day. She vaguely remembered he was just doubting whether his family loved him and she had merely explained things to dispel his doubts, not expecting that he would tell Wen Han.
"I simply told the truth." Su Mu smiled faintly: "But I think even though Shaoyuan looks like you, his character is quite different. He must be more like his mother, right?"
Wen Han nodded her head:
"Yes, Zhuo Qing was also very clever and quick-witted, but then..."
Later, the lively and optimistic girl became quiet and reticent, just like the current Su Mu.
Wen Han had never seen what Su Mu looked like a long time ago, but she had heard a bit from Jiang Bei’s perspective. Su Mu was also a bright and smiling girl, it’s a pity that he never saw her like that. From the first day he met her, life had ground down all her spirits.
Regarding Zhuo Qing, Wen Han never spoke of it again, and Su Mu did not ask further. The two sat quietly, neither speaking a word until Wen Shaoyuan entered the room, running over with a smile full of warmth.
With the company of Wen Shaoyuan, the afternoon was destined to be relaxing, it’s just a pity that even the most wonderful times have moments of farewell. When dusk fell, Wen Han left with a reluctant Wen Shaoyuan.
Jiang Bei had the next day off work and didn’t go back with Wen Han. Wei Shaoqin probably knew they had things to discuss; after dinner, he also left the Glass House.
After going upstairs, Jiang Bei took out her backpack and dumped all the snacks out:
"Knowing you can’t drink, today is a snack party for us, but I know you can’t eat snacks either, so you just watch me eat."
Su Mu smiled and took her seat opposite her:
"Help yourself, you never get fat no matter what you eat."
Jiang Bei shook her head: "Isn’t it: ’Eat whatever you want and never gain weight’? That’s simply the result of being so busy in the hospital that your feet kick the back of your head, especially in the emergency department; there’s never a moment’s rest."
"With your experience and connections, you could totally transfer out of the emergency department. Didn’t you always want to go to surgery before?"
"That was before, things are different now." Jiang Bei smiled and opened a bag of potato chips, "Before officially becoming a doctor, everyone wants to get on the operating table, to make the best incision. But later I realized it’s all the same; it’s all about healing and saving lives. The emergency department is busy, but it’s where most lives are saved and healed. I feel my value can be maximized here. Besides, there are already so many good surgeons in the hospital, yet the number of doctors in the emergency department only decreases, not increases. I couldn’t possibly leave."
Everyone knows the emergency department sees many critical patients, has heavy tasks, and is where the most patients congregate; it is the busiest department in the hospital. Few people volunteer for such a position, and Jiang Bei is one of the few who does, and also does not want to leave.
Su Mu’s gaze was filled with pride as she looked at Jiang Bei:
"I always thought ’angel in white’ was just an adjective, but you’ve shown me what a real angel in white looks like."
On hearing this, Jiang Bei straightened up, tossed away the potato chips, and struck a somewhat flirty pose:
"Really? I always said I’m the very definition of an angel in white."
Su Mu picked up the camera beside her, turned it on, adjusted the angle, and took a picture of Jiang Bei. Jiang Bei couldn’t wait to see it and Su Mu handed her the camera. After looking at it, Jiang Bei couldn’t help but feel sentimental:
"I have to say, some things do require talent. You just took a casual shot, and you’ve captured such an artistic atmosphere."
In the photo, Jiang Bei is holding her face in her hands, her eyes squinting as she sits cross-legged, with a full glass window behind her. On the window, there are strings of small lights, all blurred into shadows by Su Mu, making the scene look particularly fresh and clean.
"This camera is expensive, right?" Jiang Bei handed the camera back to Su Mu: "I remember this camera has always been your dream."
