Chapter 145: Why Didn’t You Bring Your Wife?
Chapter 145: Chapter 145: Why Didn’t You Bring Your Wife?
Su Mu chuckled lightly:
"That might be a bit of an overstatement, nobody in this world is indispensable; it’s just a matter of getting used to someone. As for Shaoyuan, I was just the first to leave a good impression, otherwise, he wouldn’t have accepted me so quickly."
"I acknowledge what you’re saying; everything takes getting used to. However, Shaoyuan had other tutors before you, yet you are the first he has been so open and honest with. Sometimes he doesn’t even share intimate words with me, his grandmother. You can’t deny that sometimes it’s about fate. I believe there is that something between you and Shaoyuan."
Su Mu gave a slight smile and said no more. She could feel that both Wen Han and Jiang Bei did not wish for her to quit her tutoring job, and she understood that changing tutors was not necessarily good for Wen Shaoyuan. But she did not enjoy being kept waiting.
Yet, with Wen Han’s words getting to this point, and considering his previous help, Su Mu felt it would be improper to refuse:
"I’ll try to adjust as soon as I can."
Wen Han smiled:
"Take it at your own pace. Do not force yourself because of Shaoyuan’s issues; I don’t want this to become a stress for you."
At this moment, Wen Shaoyuan spotted them and wriggled out of Jiang Bei’s hand, calling out ’Sister Su’ as he ran over quickly, nearly falling in the process. But after regaining his balance, he continued to run towards her at the same speed.
His innocence and purity made Su Mu feel that rejecting Wen Shaoyuan would be cruel, as he was so incredibly dependent on her.
Perhaps remembering a previous lesson, this time Wen Shaoyuan, no matter how much he wanted to hug Su Mu, restrained himself. He stood in front of her, gazing up with his little palm-sized face, then the smile slowly faded from his face:
"Sister Su, why have you lost weight?"
Su Mu squatted down and touched his hair: "Because Sister Su is on a diet. I ate a little too much before."
"Really? I didn’t think Sister Su was overweight before; I actually think you’re a bit too thin now." Wen Shaoyuan touched her face, "Is it because the weather is cold, and Sister Su is feeling the chill? Why don’t you come to live at my house? Grandma’s cooking skills are excellent. You’ll eat a lot for sure. Look at me—I’ve got a little belly now."
Su Mu amiably patted Wen Shaoyuan’s little belly:
"It’s cute for a child to eat more."
"For you girls, eating more is about being healthy."
Su Mu laughed, this was the first heartfelt smile she had since leaving Bishui Yuntian: "Alright, Sister Su will listen to you."
When they returned to the Glass House, Wei Shaoqin had already come back. Upon seeing the handsome man next to Su Mu, he frowned, but when the little troublemaker called that man ’Dad,’ he relaxed. After all, he thought, a man with a wife and child probably wouldn’t have any other designs on Su Mu.
He wasn’t considering himself, nor was he afraid of gaining a rival in love. However, he was worried about Su Mu being deceived again. She had already been fooled once by that scoundrel, Fu Shinian; there couldn’t be a second time.
Jiang Bei introduced them, and Wei Shaoqin shook hands with Wen Han, acknowledging each other. But Wei Shaoqin couldn’t help but blurt out provocatively:
"Mr. Wen, how come you didn’t bring your wife with you?"
Wei Shaoqin had never met Wen Han, and Jiang Bei hadn’t mentioned whether this Wen Han was indeed the Wen Han from the Wen Family of Shen City, so he automatically disregarded the fact that there was a well-known family member named Wen Han serving as a regimental commander in the military in Shen City. His question was purely an attempt to remind him, you’re a married man, don’t entertain thoughts about Su Mu.
However, his words seemed to chill the atmosphere.
Jiang Bei looked as if she wanted to kill him, and Su Mu also seemed somewhat displeased. Even as Wei Shaoqin, albeit a bit dense, realized he had misspoken and wondered how to recover, Wen Han spoke up. He was not angry or offended but simply said:
"She passed away."
Wei Shaoqin gave an awkward smile, "Sorry, I was not aware."
"It’s alright."
Wen Han, holding Wen Shaoyuan’s hand, walked towards the living room. Wei Shaoqin, annoyed, slapped his forehead, not getting a chance to apologize to Jiang Bei before being kicked inexplicably. Although it was his fault, Wei Shaoqin, who had grown so much, aside from being slapped by Su Mu once, had never been hit by a woman before, Jiang Bei being the second.
Immediately feeling so annoyed that it made his teeth itch:
"Is this whole thing my fault?"
Jiang Bei clenched his teeth and whispered, "Who in Shen City doesn’t know that the Wen Family’s daughter-in-law died from complications during childbirth? Are you blatantly trying to challenge my brother? Let me tell you, with your puny build, my brother could crush you like an ant."
Wei Shaoqin then realized:
"He is Wen Han?"
"Didn’t I already tell you?" Jiang Bei looked at him as if he were looking at someone with an intellectual disability.
"How was I supposed to know that this Wen Han is the Wen Han of the Wen Family? You didn’t make it clear."
"I didn’t make it clear?" Jiang Bei was so angry he was about to explode: "How should I have introduced him? Say he’s the only son of North China Military Region Commander Wen Songyan and diplomat Zhou Yaxian? Are you out of your mind?"
Wei Shaoqin: "..."
Su Mu looked at Wen Han and Wen Shaoyuan, who had already taken their seats on the living room sofa, and said indifferently:
"I was afraid Shaoyuan would be upset."
After all, Su Mu had never heard him mention his mother.
Wei Shaoqin apologized again:
"I really didn’t know he was the Wen Han I knew."
Jiang Bei and Su Mu didn’t pay any more attention to him and went directly to the living room. Wei Shaoqin, watching the backs of the two, felt so aggrieved that it was almost unbearable. Before he knew Su Mu, he was the tyrant who thought he was the most important person in the world, did whatever he wanted, and cared for no one’s opinion.
But since he had met Su Mu, especially after becoming so-called friends with her, his status had been falling day by day. He felt he was even less regarded than Auntie Yang who helped out at the Glass House; at least when they saw Auntie Yang, they greeted her with smiles, whereas they looked at him as if he owed them eight million dollars.
Wei Shaoqin couldn’t help but think he had to win back his lost ground.
Perhaps because of Wei Shaoqin’s previous lack of restraint, he was unusually quiet at the dinner table, silently serving dishes to Su Mu, with great attentiveness. Wen Han noticed this, his gaze shifting back and forth between the two, but ultimately he remained silent.
Wen Shaoyuan, however, had some trouble watching, and spoke up:
"Uncle Wei, Sister Su isn’t a child anymore, I’m the child, why don’t you serve me any dishes?"
Wei Shaoqin hadn’t interacted with Wen Shaoyuan before and didn’t realize he was a mischievous one. He couldn’t help but laugh:
"Although you are a child, you’re also a man, and a man should learn to take responsibility. You’ve got to do your own things."
Wen Shaoyuan wanted to retort, but Wei Shaoqin cut him off:
"Also, don’t call me Uncle Wei; I’m your brother."
Jiang Bei, speechless: "You mean we should be calling my brother ’Uncle’ then? Why don’t you call me ’Auntie’ and see how it sounds?"
Wei Shaoqin: "What’s it to you? This is between me and the kid."
"Because I can’t stand you trying to repaint an old cucumber green."
Su Mu had been watching the banter with interest, which made Wen Han, who had been about to intervene and stop Jiang Bei, hold back the words on the tip of his tongue. Perhaps this could also become something that would make her happy.
