Chapter 136: Chapter 136: One Month, One Hundred Million
Compared to Su Mu, Qin Nianwan’s past few days hadn’t been especially good either. Song Zhengxian’s phone calls had tirelessly continued for three days, each and every time fixated on the same topic, asking her when she could send more money. Pressured to her limit, Qin Nianwan finally exploded with intolerance during the last call:
"Song Zhengxian, I earn money, not print it. Can’t you stop pressuring me like this? The entire payment for my last role hadn’t even stayed in my hands for an hour before Han Lu transferred it all to you. I also borrowed 50 million from Fu Shinian to give to you; what more do you want?"
"Qin Nianwan, I shouldn’t need to remind you that we’re in the same boat, right? Only if I’m doing well can you find some relief. Moreover, we’re at a critical time; the company has just been established, and there’s no area that doesn’t need money. Hancheng is planning a new school, and I need to seize this opportunity to claim the land around it. If I succeed this time, we won’t have to worry for this lifetime, or even the next!"
Qin Nianwan closed her eyes:
"How many times has it been already? Every time you promise me a bright future, but not once have you delivered! Song Zhengxian, I beg you to let me go. I just want to live my life peacefully. Let’s act as if we never knew each other. I don’t want the money I gave you anymore, and I will repay Fu Shinian myself. Can we do that?"
Although they weren’t face to face, Qin Nianwan could still feel the dangerous aura emanating from Song Zhengxian. She shouldn’t feel scared; after all, they weren’t even in the same country at the moment. Yet the memory of every previous encounter made her shiver uncontrollably. But having said so much, no matter what else she said, he would always hold this debt over her. Better to just say it outright.
Qin Nianwan gritted her teeth and mustered her courage:
"I know I owed you before, and without you, I might not have survived. But after all these years, I think I’ve repaid my debt. I’m only 27, I have plenty of good years left. Please, for the sake of mercy, let me go. Or if you think the money isn’t enough, I can pay you back slowly in the future, alright?"
Song Zhengxian chuckled lightly:
"I can hear that you can’t wait to leave my side. But have you considered what happens to Xuanxuan?"
At the mention of Xuanxuan, Qin Nianwan softened completely; all her courage was drained in that moment. Feigning hope and pity in her voice, she said:
"Xuanxuan? Is she with you right now? Could I talk to her please?"
"I heard from Han Lu that you might still have some lingering feelings for Fu Shinian? Qin Nianwan, don’t forget why you returned to Shen City. I don’t mind you sleeping with Fu Shinian, nor do I care if you get involved with any man. I just want money, nothing else matters. I’m one billion short for the land auction. Prep that money for me within a month, and I will let Xuanxuan go to Shen City to be with you... maybe... I might even consider letting you off the hook."
Qin Nianwan was shocked:
"Are you crazy? One billion? Where am I supposed to find one billion for you?"
"How did you get the last fifty million? Do I need to teach you?"
"Fu Shinian isn’t a fool. It might have worked last time, but it doesn’t mean he won’t become suspicious this time. If he traces it back to you, neither of us will have an easy time of it."
Song Zhengxian chuckled lightly again:
"So, you’re saying you don’t want to see Xuanxuan then?"
"Don’t..." Xuanxuan was Qin Nianwan’s Achilles’ heel, her heart trembled every time Xuanxuan was mentioned: "Give me some time to think of a solution."
"Don’t forget, one month, one billion."
After saying those words, Song Zhengxian hung up, leaving Qin Nianwan sitting on the sofa, utterly despondent.
She was indeed a sought-after star at the moment, her payment for a role wasn’t low, and she had many film offers coming her way, but no matter how high, it would take months before she saw any returns. Endorsements were a quick way to earn, but for some reason Chen Jie wasn’t accepting any, saying something about following a high-end route.
But Qin Nianwan had no desire to take any high-end routes. She just wanted to take the lucrative route — if it meant breaking free from Song Zhengxian’s grasp. She cared little for what she had to do. Unfortunately, she dared not discuss this with Chen Jie, uncertain if Chen Jie’s intentions represented Fu Shinian’s.
One month, one billion, even if she were killed she couldn’t raise that much money.
Yet this was Qin Nianwan’s only chance to leave Song Zhengxian — his sole show of leniency in many years. She couldn’t give up easily; perhaps she could think of another way, or perhaps she could beg Fu Shinian once more.
When Su Mu woke up, dusk was setting in. The snow outside had stopped, and even the sun had made an appearance in the afternoon, so the first thing she saw upon waking was the sky filled with red clouds, beautiful like a dream.
Looking around, she found herself in an entirely unfamiliar environment, surrounded by glass windows through which she could see the outside from any angle. She admitted its beauty but still felt uneasy about the unfamiliarity — was this another setting Fu Shinian had arranged for her?
Away from the city center — maybe less likely to be found.
When Jiang Bei came upstairs and saw that Su Mu had awakened, he quickly pocketed his phone and hurried over, sitting beside her and taking her hand with affection, but he was mindful not to squeeze too hard, considering her physical condition:
"You’re awake? You frightened me. How are you feeling now? Is there any discomfort?"
Su Mu shook her head:
"I’m okay."
Those two simple words unexpectedly brought tears to Jiang Bei’s eyes, and he looked at Su Mu reproachfully:
"Okay? You can fool yourself, but can you fool my eyes? Don’t forget, I’m a doctor, I can tell whether you’re well or not at a glance. Don’t just say sweet words to mislead me. Fu Shinian really is heartless, to have tormented you this badly. But don’t worry, I will eventually seek justice for you."
At the mention of Fu Shinian’s name, Su Mu’s expression became a bit vacant, as if it were an incredibly distant name for her, so far as to be almost unfamiliar. Jiang Bei, seeing Su Mu like this, thought he had touched upon her sorrow and regretted his rash words, blaming himself for not considering Su Mu’s emotions.
She had just woken up, neither her mood nor her body had recovered, so how could she be challenged with such grievances again?
"I didn’t mean to. It’s just that I’m so angry seeing you like this. If you don’t want to discuss it, I won’t mention that bastard in front of you again."
Su Mu simply smiled and shook her head lightly.
