Chapter 185: Chapter 185 Okay, I’ll wait!_1
But—she dared not gamble, dared not use her parents as a stake, because she believed that his mother was capable of anything!
Yet, if she were to leave him again, how cruel that would be to him!
"Just wait a little longer," she murmured without daring to look into his eyes, staring instead at the neatly tied knot of his tie.
Mu Yingchen’s grip on her hand instantly stiffened, and a deep shade of disappointment swept across his eyes.
Wait a little longer? Until when? How many years and months should he wait?
Could it really be so difficult for her to nod her head in agreement?
What exactly was she hiding from him? What was she worried about, and why couldn’t she tell him, why not choose to trust him!
"Wait? What do you mean by that? Yingchen has already lowered his voice, and you’re still saying wait—are you taking my son for granted?" Mu’s mother’s face turned sour upon hearing Su Wanxia’s words.
Wait a little longer! She was actually not giving up yet!
"Mrs. Mu, Xiaxia didn’t say much. Besides, we didn’t even know about their plans to get married. What’s wrong with waiting a little longer?" Su’s mother became angry when she saw the expression on Mu’s mother’s face.
She clearly didn’t want Xiaxia to marry Yingchen, so why was she still putting on an act and pressuring them here!
"Shen Fei—"
"Jing Lanzhi!"
Mu’s mother was about to speak in anger, but after only two words were uttered, Su’s mother suddenly stood up from her seat, uncontrollably shouting at her.
"You—" Mu’s mother became so enraged by Su’s mother’s shout that her face turned black.
Upon hearing the argument between the two women, Mu Yingchen’s eyes flickered, further cementing the thoughts in his mind.
He sighed heavily and said to Su Wanxia, "Fine, I’ll wait!"
Su Wanxia’s heart trembled—what was she supposed to do now...
Both Mu’s mother and Su’s mother heard Mu Yingchen’s words—one was in a rush of anger, and the other was relieved.
Mu’s mother was angry that her plan had not achieved the expected effect, while Su’s mother was relieved that Mu Yingchen had not reacted angrily to Su Wanxia’s response.
"Mom, let’s go back—" Mu Yingchen said, turning to speak to his mother, whose face was not looking good.
"Yingchen, don’t you believe what I’ve said? She is not sincerely with you—" Mu’s mother said.
"Mom, I can feel whether it’s sincere or not. Let’s go back—" said Mu Yingchen, his face also not looking good, as Su Wanxia had hurt him once more.
"You—" Mu’s mother wanted to say more.
But Mu Yingchen directly addressed Su’s parents, "Uncle, aunt, I apologize for the disturbance—I’ll visit you again another day."
"Heh, Yingchen, you’re too polite," said Su’s father.
And so, Mu Yingchen led his mother, her face dark with anger, out of Su Wanxia’s house.
As he was leaving, he did not look at Su Wanxia, nor did he say anything to her, except for that one sentence: Fine, I’ll wait!
After Mu Yingchen and his mother had left, Su Wanxia closed her eyes weakly.
She was too greedy; wasn’t it enough to just stay by his side? Why couldn’t she control her feelings and ended up accepting his proposal? What was she doing?
She and he are impossible—
She opened her eyes and gazed at the engagement ring on her right hand for a long time. Then, she extended her left hand and slowly took it off her finger.
Su’s mother couldn’t help but gasp in shock, "Xiaxia..."
Looking down, she said, "Mom, I want to give it back to Mu Yingchen—"
"Xiaxia, do you know what you’re saying?"
"Mom, I should have never agreed in the first place, or maybe—I should have never come back—" her voice was faint, as if it could dissipate at any moment.
She should have waited until he got married, had his own family, and then returned. Perhaps by then, he would have been a stranger to her, and the contract between her and his mother would have truly turned into waste paper.
But because of her selfishness, things had escalated to this point!
His mother would not let this go easily!
And she would not put her parents in danger.
So, she had to control herself, she had to hurt him.
"Xiaxia, this is your fate. When fate comes, we cannot stop it. If one day your bonds truly come to an end, then they will naturally part."
"Mom—I really don’t know what to do..."
"Silly child, when you don’t know what to do, don’t force yourself to make a choice. Yingchen will definitely find a way. You just stop adding to his troubles—"
Su’s mother said while wiping away the tear at the corner of Su Wanxia’s eye, gently patting her back.
Su’s father watched the two of them and sighed deeply.
After all, is it fate or misfortune—who could really tell?
Time flew by, and it was half a month later. The atmosphere of the Spring Festival was growing stronger.
During this time, Su Wanxia stayed at home. Before she went abroad, Su’s father had said that she should start working at the company as soon as she returned, but because of her situation with Mu Yingchen, her mood was always low, and Su’s father never brought up the matter of work again seeing her like this.
Moreover, the New Year was almost upon them; it didn’t matter if she didn’t go to work.
In the meantime, Mu Yingchen had called a few times, but every time they spoke very little before falling into silence.
Su Wanxia knew that he was waiting for her to speak, waiting for her to say "Let’s get married"—but every time, she only disappointed him.
Jesse had also called once about the photo, asking if she had found out anything from her mother. She could only shake her head.
Jesse could only comfort her not to worry, that these things take time to investigate and can’t be rushed.
Moreover, Jesse told her that for some reason, those people who were always urging him to find a suspect had vanished from the scene as if they had evaporated, leaving no trace. He had thought they had approached her, but they hadn’t.
These two matters tortured her day and night. She felt she was going mad, dazed all day, not knowing what she was doing.
That day, as she stood dazedly by the bedroom window, the ring of a telephone snapped her out of her thoughts.
She came to her senses and, staring at the caller ID on her phone, was slightly stunned.
After a long ring, she finally pressed the answer button.
"Have you eaten?" His familiar, pleasant voice came through from the other end.
Her throat constricted, and she suddenly felt aggrieved, blaming him for his recent indifference and blaming herself for being too sentimental and too dependent on him.
She hummed softly and then fell silent again.
Mu Yingchen also fell silent on the line; although connected by a call, the quiet was terrifying.
She heard him sigh softly, then he said quietly, "I’ll come to your house to pick you up in a bit."
She was startled, then hummed again.
After hanging up, she stared blankly out the window at the darkening sky.
It wasn’t long before Mu Yingchen arrived; she went out, and without a word, he stuffed her into the car and drove straight to his villa.
When they were in the living room, Mu Yingchen stared straight at her lowered head and, sighing heavily, said helplessly, "Tell me, what exactly did you promise my mother?"
