Chapter 140: Chapter 140 Are You Happy?_1
Su Wanxia entertained herself in the office for a while longer until Meng Can called, saying he had arrived at the office.
She hung up the phone, happy, and dashed downstairs.
The two hadn’t seen each other for some time, and the first moment Meng Can saw her, he smiled and said, "You’ve been looking well recently."
Su Wanxia chuckled, "You’re not bad either. Isn’t it nice staying at home?"
"Yeah, it is. I haven’t stayed home this long for ages, and I particularly love the dishes my mom makes."
"Right? Me too, I especially love the food my mom cooks," Su Wanxia told Meng Can, with a reminiscent look on her face.
Meng Can, looking at her radiant smile, stopped what he was doing and asked softly, "Summer, are you happy now?"
Su Wanxia didn’t expect him to ask that so suddenly. She paused, then laughed and said as if in sigh, "Yeah, I think these are the happiest times of my life. I can be with my parents, and also with---heh, you know."
She felt embarrassed to continue because she felt her current life was all she could wish for.
Being able to spend time with her parents whenever she wanted, to be together with him without overthinking, and to chat about everything under the sun with her closest girlfriends—wasn’t that wonderful? She was content.
So, she decided to stay in the country. She wanted this kind of life to last a little longer, to create even more beautiful memories.
How could Meng Can not understand her? While he was happy for her, a tinge of bitterness crept into his heart.
Seeing her happiness was all the reassurance he needed—
"So, where are you planning to develop your career in the future?"
"Well, I plan to stay in the country. What about you? Still planning to go to France?" Su Wanxia was sitting opposite Meng Can, looking up at him across the desk.
"Yes, I plan to continue my career in France. In a few years, I plan to bring my parents over there."
"That’s also good, after all, you’ve already made great achievements in France," Su Wanxia nodded, knowing that Meng Can’s success abroad had come from years of hard work and couldn’t be given up so easily.
And her---she just wanted to follow her heart, go as far as she could, and live every day to the fullest. As for the future, she didn’t know; she only wanted to make the most of each day.
"It’s alright," Meng Can said with a tone of resignation before adding, "I hope there will be opportunities for us to collaborate in the future."
Su Wanxia nodded vigorously: "Definitely."
"How about we have lunch together?" Meng Can finally tidied up the mountain of things on his desk, then he looked up at Su Wanxia, who was propping her chin with her hands.
Su Wanxia’s eyes flickered as if she was pondering something.
Seeing her expression, Meng Can instantly understood the reason.
"Well, if it’s not convenient, let’s wait for next time. When you come to France, make sure to let me know. I’ll treat you to French cuisine."
Hearing him say this, Su Wanxia stopped dwelling on it and spoke up without hesitation: "It’s not inconvenient. Since you’re leaving, I’ll treat you today. How about we go for Chinese? Consider it a farewell."
"Are you sure it’s okay?" Meng Can asked again.
"It’s fine. Besides, what could be the problem?" Su Wanxia was almost ready to swear on it.
"Well then, today you’re treating," he chuckled.
"OK, no problem," Su Wanxia agreed smoothly, though she still couldn’t help feeling a bit nervous inside.
Mu Yingchen had told her to stay by his side at all times, and when he wanted her to accompany him to a meeting, she had made an excuse to evade, which already left him a bit displeased.
If he finished the meeting and didn’t see her in the office, she wondered if he would be furious.
Well, never mind, she would just have to spend another day with him. But Meng Can was leaving, and as a friend and confidant, how could she not see him off?
After packing up for a while longer, Meng Can was finally done. She wondered if it was somehow inherent that men owned fewer miscellaneous things than women, or if women naturally just had more belongings.
She packed her things and filled an entire large box, while Meng Can only used a regular standard box.
"Is that all you have?" she wondered if he threw a lot of his stuff away.
"Yeah, how much more do I need?" Meng Can seemed puzzled and didn’t understand the meaning behind her question.
"Alright, I packed an entire large box when I was sorting out my stuff," Su Wanxia said with a look of helplessness.
Meng Can couldn’t help but chuckle, "Women always have more stuff than men."
"I suppose that’s true," Su Wanxia nodded.
"Haha."
The two of them then went to the parking lot and drove straight to the Chinese restaurant Su Wanxia had mentioned.
In fact, that Chinese restaurant was the same one Mu Yingchen often took her to; most of the waitstaff there recognized her because they were familiar with Mu Yingchen.
But since Mu Yingchen always brought her along, they remembered her as well.
As soon as she and Meng Can entered, some of the waitstaff who recognized her stared in surprise.
She smiled awkwardly at them and then led Meng Can inside.
After the two were seated, Meng Can asked, "Do you come here often?"
"Hehe, yeah, the food here tastes good," Su Wanxia said dryly with a smile.
Mu Yingchen was the one who often brought her here, and over time she had grown accustomed to the taste.
Today, the waitstaff’s surprise at seeing her must have stemmed from their wonder at why she wasn’t with Mu Yingchen but with another man instead.
She sighed silently in her heart, exasperated. Couldn’t she just have a meal with a friend? Their looks of astonishment were simply unbearable.
"Really? Then I have to eat more today," Meng Can said with a laugh.
"Sure, order whatever you like, don’t be shy," Su Wanxia assumed the demeanor of a hostess so convincingly that Meng Can couldn’t help but laugh helplessly.
They ordered their dishes and were chatting cheerfully when Su Wanxia’s phone rang.
She could tell who was calling just by moving her toes.
She slowly pulled out her phone to check, and sure enough, it was Mu Yingchen, that scheming man.
She wondered whether she should pretend not to hear it and not answer, explaining after she finished the meal and returned.
No, no, if she didn’t answer, he would surely keep calling, and there would be trouble when she got back. Better to just answer it.
Thinking this, she resigned herself and answered the call.
"Su Wanxia! Where have you run off to again!" Mu Yingchen’s voice came through the phone, sounding somewhat angry.
She let out a chuckle and deliberately softened her voice, "I’m out having a meal with a friend, I’ll come back after we’re done."
"Out having a meal with a friend?" Mu Yingchen’s voice was as low as it could be.
Su Wanxia knew he was genuinely angry this time.
"Hehe, yes."
No sooner had she finished speaking than Mu Yingchen asked sternly, "Male or female?"
Upon hearing his question, Su Wanxia was at a loss for words, thinking, what does it matter if it’s a man or a woman? What’s the big deal?
