“Eh, Zhan Mingyan…”

Bai Jue turned around, the glass door closed, he was met with disappointment.

“Hurry back.”

Having said that, Zhan Mingyan immediately drew the door curtains.

Bai Jue stepped back and turned to look at the floor-to-ceiling windows, only to see the curtains were also drawn, leaving no gaps, out of sight from the inside.

“Ah—” He sighed, glanced at the umbrella in his hand, and simply sat down at the doorstep.

One hand resting on his knee, he looked up at the dark, oppressive night sky, not a star in sight, feeling somewhat depressed.

Inside the house, Zhan Mingyan lay in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep.

The sound of rain outside went tick-tock, tick-tock, further unsettling her.

She turned over, looking at the small lamp lit on the table, its soft yellow light reflecting in her eyes, involuntarily conjuring up the image of the man drenched by the rain.

That bastard, I wonder if he’s made it home yet.

After a while, she threw off the blankets, sat up, slipped on her slippers, and walked outside to pour a cup of water.

After taking a couple of sips, she set down the cup, approached the window, and drew back the curtains to look at the pitch black out there, the raging wind bustling through the windows.

Just as she was about to drop the curtains, out of the corner of her eye, she caught sight of the man sitting at the doorstep, stunned at first, then astonished, and with a tinge of heartache she hadn’t noticed before.

This lunatic.

She strode to the doorway, lifted the door curtains, and quickly opened the door.

Just as she stepped out, the cold wind struck her, making the hair on her arms stand on end.

Arms crossed, she looked down at him and scolded, “Bai Jue, have you lost your mind? Didn’t I tell you to go back? Why are you still here?”

In the middle of the night, in the rain, he just sat there, the madman.

The moment she opened the door, Bai Jue awoke. He squinted at her, noting the tint of anxiety on her face, and curled the corners of his mouth.

“I said I’d guard the door for you.”

His voice was hoarse and carried a touch of weakness.

Zhan Mingyan bit her lip, crouched down, and began scolding him nonstop, “Are you out of your mind? I already said it was not necessary, can’t you understand human words? In this storm, without even using the umbrella, is there something wrong with your brain? If you stay out here all night and catch a cold or a fever, who’s going to take responsibility?”

“You take responsibility.” Sensing the concern in her words, Bai Jue smiled contentedly, his eyelids heavy, he leaned towards her.

“Hey, hey, Bai Jue, what’s wrong with you?” Zhan Mingyan caught him, alarmed by the burning heat of his skin.

Her complexion shifted slightly as she struggled to lift him, Bai Jue’s full weight pressing down on her, each step taking her breath away.

“Huff—” It took a great effort, but she managed to dump him onto the sofa, then she went to close the door and draw the curtains before turning to fetch the medicine box.

After grabbing the fever reducer and pouring a cup of warm water, Zhan Mingyan turned on the light and hurried back to the couch.

“Bai Jue, take your medicine quickly.”

She knelt beside the sofa, stuffed the pill into his mouth. Bai Jue, groggy, opened his eyes, took the cup of water and gulped it down, then fell back to sleep.

Zhan Mingyan set down the cup and frowned at his drenched clothes.

If he slept in these wet clothes, he might continue to have a high fever the next day.

She reached out to lift him, putting his hand over her shoulder to support him as they walked back to the inner room, where she tossed him onto the bed. She busied herself looking for clothes for him.

After rummaging through every drawer and cupboard, she only found a loose nightgown and a baggy short-sleeved T-shirt.

She wiped the light sweat from her forehead, wrestling with which piece of clothing to put on him.

After thinking for a few seconds, she stuffed the T-shirt back into the wardrobe and returned to the bed with a nightgown in hand.

The nightgown was long enough; she didn’t need to find pants for him. This would do, barely passing muster.

“Bai Jue, wake up. Don’t sleep yet, change your clothes first then sleep.”

Bai Jue turned over, showing no signs of waking up.

“Damn you, Bai Jue!” Zhan Mingyan tugged at him, but failed to move him. She sat on the bed, exhausted, wishing she could kick him off.

In the middle of the night, he really knew how to trouble her.

Forget it, considering his fever, she reluctantly decided not to fuss over it.

She took a deep breath, reached out and started tugging at his clothes. The sleeves were damp and clung to his arms, making them difficult to remove.

She scratched her head, then her eyes lit up. She got up, ran outside, and soon returned with a pair of scissors.

Grabbing the cuff, she cut right through the clothing. With a “rip,” the expensive garment was ruined.

Hearing the noise, Bai Jue finally opened his eyes. Zhan Mingyan was pulling at his shirt, and suddenly met his gaze, startling her.

“You’re awake. Hurry up and change your clothes yourself.”

She dropped the scissors and the torn shirt, clearing her throat.

Bai Jue glanced at her, half-closed his eyes, started to undo his belt, and pretended to take off his pants. Seeing this, Zhan Mingyan quickly turned her back.

“Bai Jue, I found you a nightgown, just make do with it.”

The rustling sounds behind her ceased, and Zhan Mingyan frowned, sneaking a peek. She felt a headache coming on.

She saw Bai Jue had taken off his pants and was wrapped in the blanket, sleeping soundly. The nightgown lay untouched at the end of the bed.

She walked over, picked up the nightgown, and carefully helped him into it. Thankfully she had accidentally bought a size too large, otherwise it would have been really difficult to put it on him.

“You’ve exhausted me!”

Zhan Mingyan gasped for air and, looking down at Bai Jue wearing the nightgown, couldn’t help but laugh. Driven by mischief, she took out her phone and captured this rare sight.

After taking the photo, she covered him with the blanket and stepped out with a blanket in her arms.

In the darkness, the man in the bed opened his tightly shut eyes, a hint of amusement flickering deep in his pupils. He looked down at the nightgown on his body with mild disdain.

With a wave of his hand, the nightgown that Zhan Mingyan had struggled to put on him dropped to the floor, and he pulled the blanket over his head to sleep. The pillow was scented with her faint fragrance.

As dawn began to break, the night’s rain finally stopped.

On the couch, Zhan Mingyan wasn’t awake yet, and the blanket that covered her was about to slide to the floor.

She murmured softly, slowly waking up, her sleepy eyes looking around.

Right, Bai Jue!

With a start, she quickly got up, put on her shoes, and ran into the inner room.

In the dim light, the person on the bed was sound asleep.

Zhan Mingyan lightened her footsteps, approaching the bed. She looked down to see the man’s facial bruise had faded a bit.

She reached out, her warm fingertips gently touched it, then swiftly withdrew her hand.

“Good morning!”

The husky voice somehow sounded sensual.

Zhan Mingyan quickly pulled her hand back and stepped back, while Bai Jue opened his eyes, pinching the bridge of his nose, feeling a bit groggy.

“You still have a bit of a fever, you need to take some more pills. I’ll go get them for you.”

After speaking, she rushed out.
