With the faint moonlight, the silhouette of the figure was vaguely discernible as a woman.

The cool breeze blew, causing the fallen leaves to rustle.

Unwillingly, the woman held her breath, her eyes flickering with tension. She glanced behind her from time to time, her palms sweating coldly.

She had to make it quick; no one would come at this hour, she reassured herself, turning to look at the steaming stew pot in front of her.

She took a deep breath, opened her palm, and a small black porcelain bottle almost blended into the night. She reached out to lift the lid of the stew pot, and the rising steam blurred her facial expression.

It was all their fault, they drove her to this, she didn’t want to come to this, if anyone’s to blame, it’s because they were too unfair to her, too unfair to her child.

She bit her lip hard, a fierce look flashed through the depths of her eyes. Without further hesitation, she uncorked the porcelain bottle and scattered white powder into the stew pot.

Watching the white powder disappear into the soup, a cold smile played on the woman’s lips. She picked up the pot’s lid, covered it again, and then tucked the porcelain bottle back into her pocket.

She meticulously inspected the sink, fearing she’d leave a trace. After ensuring everything was in order, she quickly left the kitchen.

“Mom!”

Passing through the dining room, a voice suddenly rang out.

The next second, the lights turned on, and Zhao Xuan quickly covered the fleeting panic on her face, forcibly calming herself down.

She looked up and saw An Yu, slightly drunk under the light,

“Mom, what are you doing here so late at night?” An Yu staggered over, reeking of alcohol that wouldn’t dissipate.

Zhao Xuan reached out to support her, frowning, “I didn’t eat dinner, just came down to grab some food. Why are you so drunk?”

“I’m fine, I’m fine…” An Yu burped, her cheeks flushed red, clearly having had quite a bit to drink, too drunk to be lucid.

“You child, I’ll help you back to your room to rest.” Zhao Xuan draped over her about to topple over, guiding her upstairs.

“Mom, I can’t accept this, I can’t,” An Yu leaned on her, ranting, “Why does Jian Qing get all the good stuff, why? I’m the rightful Miss of the An Family, why won’t great-grandpa like me, why can’t he see me?”

“Alright, stop making a fuss this late at night, you’ll wake everyone up. If your grandfather sees you drunk like this, he’s going to scold you again,” Zhao Xuan covered her mouth, whispering softly.

“Let them talk, I’m not afraid. They all don’t like me anyway, all siding with Jian Qing,” An Yu pulled away her hand, continuing her tirade.

Hearing this, Zhao Xuan felt even more heartache for her own daughter, her hatred for the old Master An and others intensified. She gently stroked her hair and softly said, “Yuyu, that won’t happen. Everything in the An Family belongs to you and your brother. Mom won’t let Jian Qing and them take away what belongs to you.”

“Really?” An Yu squinted her eyes, becoming drowsy.

Zhao Xuan nodded, “Of course, I will protect everything that belongs to you.”

An Yu nodded off carelessly as Zhao Xuan hurriedly helped her back to her room.

For several days in a row, Bai Jue showed up at the flower shop every day, no matter how Zhan Mingyan tried to chase him off, he just wouldn’t leave.

After finishing up with the newly delivered goods, Zhan Mingyan turned around and saw the person sitting on the sofa, instantly feeling a headache coming on.

She quickly walked over and snatched the magazine from his hands, throwing it onto the table, “Bai Jue, are you really that idle, with nothing to do?”

Bai Jue glanced at the magazines on the table and looked up at her, a wicked and rakish smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, “Who says I’m not busy? I am very busy. Can’t you tell?”

Zhan Mingyan let out a scoff, “Busy making trouble here?”

“Of course not,” Bai Jue held up a finger and shook it, gazing straight at her as he spoke, “I am pursuing my future girlfriend. Isn’t it obvious enough?”

Future girlfriend?

Heh, a term that once moved her so greatly, and yet he had the nerve to say this after rejecting her twice. Didn’t he find it laughable?

She looked down at him from her higher position, her gaze cold, “Bai Jue, is this a line you often use when hitting on girls? Sorry, I am not one of them, so you can leave now.”

Bai Jue suddenly stood up, causing Zhan Mingyan to take two steps back.

“Zhan Mingyan, I can’t deny that I hurt you in the past. Please give me a chance to make amends to you, to truly be sincere with you,” he said earnestly as he grasped her hand, his eyes locking onto hers intensely.

Confronted with his earnest eyes, Zhan Mingyan was momentarily stunned, the heart-breaking scene she had witnessed on the island replaying in her mind.

Her eyes dimmed as she pulled her hand away and stepped back, “Bai Jue, some things can’t be reverted once they’ve happened. The scene I saw on the island has become an insurmountable chasm between us; it’s now a thorn in my heart that I can’t pull out. How can I give you a chance?”

Bai Jue’s expression became stern, his tall and firm body tensed. He lowered his gaze to her and saw the bitter smile on her lips, unable to help but reach out towards her face.

Zhan Mingyan’s eyes flickered slightly as she deftly dodged his hand, putting distance between them.

Bai Jue’s hand froze in midair, a bitter and frustrated taste engulfing his heart.

“Bai Jue, you should leave. Don’t come here anymore,” Zhan Mingyan said indifferently, turning her gaze away from him.

“You really won’t give me a second chance?” Bai Jue asked with a hoarse voice.

Following his words, Zhan Mingyan fell silent.

After a long while, she clenched her hands tightly and said resolutely, “I can’t.”

The atmosphere immediately turned icy. Xiaoling and Xiaoqing, standing in the corner, exchanged glances, both feeling anxious for Bai Jue and Zhan Mingyan.

Bai Jue’s eyes gradually dimmed. He took one deep look at her and left the flower shop without saying a word, while Zhan Mingyan never looked his way.

Only when the sound of the glass door closing rang out did she turn around. Through the glass, she saw the man’s retreating figure getting into his car and let out a bitter smile.

To be fated but not destined, perhaps that was the outcome for her and him.

“Mingyan, you obviously like Mr. Bai too. Why did you let him go?” Xiaoqing walked over and asked, puzzled.

“Watching him leave hurts you too, doesn’t it?”

Why must two people who clearly love each other torture one another like this?

“It’s not that you can be together just because you like each other.” Watching the sports car drive away in a cloud of dust, Zhan Mingyan said softly.

He was like a gust of wind. She could feel him, but she couldn’t catch him.

Xiaoqing scratched her head, still not understanding.

“All right, you go back to work. I’m going to sort out the accounts from the past few days,” Zhan Mingyan said, feigning ease.
