Chapter 612 - 612 598 Elevator Accident (2)_1

Chapter 612: 598, Elevator Accident (2)_1 Chapter 612: 598, Elevator Accident (2)_1 Zhan Mingyan suddenly snapped back to reality, hurrying to step back away from him.

“What are you dreaming about with your wishful thinking? Cut it out.” Her little ears hidden under her hair turned red hot from embarrassment. She clenched her fist, raised her head to meet his gaze, and retorted angrily.

“If you hadn’t pulled on me just now, I wouldn’t have stumbled. It seems more like you’re the one with ulterior motives.”

“Ulterior motives?”

Bai Jue narrowed his eyes, tasting these words in his mouth before bursting into laughter.

Zhan Mingyan’s face flushed, “What are you laughing at?”

“With your beanpole figure, why would it be worth my ulterior motives, huh?” Bai Jue crossed his arms over his chest, looking her up and down with amusement in his eyes.

“You…”

The fire in Zhan Mingyan’s eyes blazed stronger. She wished she could hit him square in the face.

Suddenly, the elevator gave a shaky lurch.

Zhan Mingyan’s face turned slightly pale, and instinctively she steadied herself against the elevator wall.

“What’s going on?”

Caught off guard, the lights in the elevator abruptly went out with a ‘thud’.

“Ah — ”

Zhan Mingyan let out a scream, her legs trembling.

Suddenly a large hand gripped her wrist and pulled her towards him.

“Stop screaming.”

Bai Jue grimaced, his eardrums almost shattered by her loud voice.

Zhan Mingyan’s soft cheek hit against Bai Jue’s firm chest. The screaming ceased abruptly as she clutched the man’s shirt desperately.

Her body continued to shake, beads of sweat forming on her forehead. Her face paled in the dark as she clung tightly to Bai Jue’s chest.

Bai Jue looked down at her and noticed her discomfort. He reached out to touch her forehead, “What’s wrong with you, Zhan Mingyan?”

“I’m, I’m scared.” She stuttered, her voice filled with fear.

This was the first time she had shown her vulnerable side in front of Bai Jue, unlike her usual feisty self.

Bai Jue gave a wry smile, “It’s just a small elevator malfunction, nothing to be scared of. Weren’t you fearless on Solak Island?”

Zhan Mingyan lowered her head, remaining silent.

“Or are you just using this as an excuse to take advantage of me?” he joked.

This time, she did not counter him like she used to. Instead, she sunk into silence.

After a moment, she said with a nasal voice, “My grandmother had a sudden heart attack when we were stuck in an elevator. We couldn’t save her in time.”

Back then, the elevator only held her and her grandmother. She was too young to know how to help her grandmother. All she could do was watch as her grandmother passed away in front of her eyes.

She had been too scared to take an elevator for a long time after that. Only when she grew older was she able to let go of her past. However, she still had a fear of elevator accidents.

In the blink of an eye, she felt as if she was back in the past. The image of her dying grandmother lying on the elevator floor popped into her mind.

At her words, the smile on Bai Jue’s face gradually receded.

“I’m sorry!”

Zhan Mingyan gently shook her head, loosening her grip on his shirt.

She stepped back, creating some distance between them. With her head down and eyes shut tight, her hands tremblingly at her sides.

Even in the darkness, Bai Jue’s sight was still unobstructed. Seeing her pale face, he felt a pang of guilt.

A flicker of surprise passed in his eyes as he reached into his pocket for his phone and touched something small and smooth. He grabbed it without thinking.

He pulled out his phone as well as a small, nicely wrapped piece of chocolate.

This was the chocolate that Jian Luo had shoved into his hand earlier, and it seemed to be of use now.

He turned on his phone for light, and the beam chased away the darkness of the elevator, illuminating Zhan Mingyan’s ashen face.

The redness of her eyes added more vulnerability to her features, making her resemble an abused kitten. A smirk tugged at the corner of Bai Jue’s lips.

“Here.”

Zhan Mingyan stared at the item in the man’s hand, a hint of astonishment in her teary eyes.

“Chocolate?”

She looked up at him, her eyes full of surprise.

“For me?”

Meeting her dew-filled eyes, Bai Jue cleared his throat and tried to feign indifference as he extended his hand toward her.

“Are you going to have it or not? Otherwise, I’m taking it.”

Upon confirmation that the chocolate was for her, a sweet smile spread across Zhan Mingyan’s face, easing the fear she felt earlier.

For some reason, just being around him and seeing his face brought her peace. Could this be what it felt like to be in love?

She reached out and grabbed the chocolate, cupping it tightly in her hand.

“Where did you get this chocolate?”

It was unusual for a man to carry chocolate around.”

Bai Jue casually replied, “On the way here, Jian Luo gave it to me.”

Because of this damn chocolate, he even got a nasty glare from Black Jack. He was completely innocent. Jian Luo loved playing these weird tricks.

Zhan Mingyan responded with a simple “Oh,” and both of them fell silent again.

“Why is this damn elevator still not fixed?”

Bai Jue checked his phone only to find there was no signal.

“Peacock Man, you…”

Just as Zhan Mingyan was about to speak, the lights in the elevator suddenly flickered back on.

The elevator door, which had been firmly shut, then slowly opened.

“Sorry for the inconvenience, the elevator had a temporary malfunction. It has now been restored.” Outside, the repairman apologized.

“Let’s go.”

Bai Jue exited the elevator first. Watching his retreating figure, a sigh escaped Zhan Mingyan’s lips, the glossiness in her eyes dimmed.

When they reached the hospital entrance, Bai Jue stopped.

“My apologies Zhan Mingyan for using your nickname in the ward earlier.” He said straightforwardly, without a hint of discomfort.

Zhan Mingyan gave a bright smile, “This is the second time you’ve apologized to me today.”

“You seem to be happy that I’m apologizing?” Bai Jue’s eyebrow raised, his voice was husky.

She tilted her head and chuckled, “It’s not bad.”

“Mingyan!”

An anxious man’s voice interrupted their conversation.

Bai Jue and Zhan Mingyan turned to look and saw a man in a suit, spectacles perched on an attractive face, giving him a scholarly air.

Upon seeing the man, a hint of helplessness flashed across Zhan Mingyan’s face.

She sidled up to Bai Jue and tugged his sleeve, “Bai Jue, can you help me?”

Interestingly, she stopped calling him Peacock Man when she needed a favor.

“Is that a love debt of yours?” Bai Jue asked, looking forward to some fun.

Although she was reluctant to admit it, she nodded her head.

“That’s my mother’s best friend’s son.”

She had made it clear that she didn’t like him, but he kept insisting and causing her trouble. This was one reason she didn’t want to return to Beijing.

Bai Jue smiled knowingly as he leaned close to her, “If I help you, what do I get in return?”

“One condition, name your price.” Zhan Mingyan hurriedly said as she saw the man approaching.

Bai Jue smirked, “OK!”
