Chapter 1047: 1032, Locke Side Story (1) Chapter 1047: 1032, Locke Side Story (1) Snowflakes whirled and danced in the sky, blanketing the ground in a cloak of silvery white, a uniform brilliance.
The cold wind howled, while inside the fortress, it was bustling with activity.
Glimmering crystal chandeliers, wall-mounted night pearls of considerable value, and antique vases worth millions, everywhere one looked was the epitome of opulence.
Today is the sole heir of the Sophallo family, Black Jack Sophallo’s ninth birthday party, with Y Country’s high society all on the guest list.
At such parties, men networked and talked business, women compared beauty and gossiped—it had become the norm.
The young Black Jack had long seen through all of this and was tired of these parties, especially with the many children his age, particularly girls, surrounding him.
Although he was only nine, his tall stature was exceptional for his age, and his black suit added to his young gentlemanly demeanor. His deep blue eyes betrayed a hint of impatience; his slightly furrowed brow made the little girls reflexively take a step back from him.
Just then, a boy in a white suit came over, a mischievous smile on his face and the promise of future handsomeness in his deep-set features. A devil-may-care smirk played at the corner of his mouth, and he charmed a group of little girls as he approached.
This boy was Black Jack’s good friend, Bai Jue.
“Bai Jue, did you ride a tortoise here?” Black Jack quipped the moment he saw the boy.
Bai Jue glanced at the crowd around him and gave Black Jack a sly wink, “It looks like your charm with the little girls has improved quite a bit.”
Black Jack rolled his eyes at him, then dragged him away from the suffocating banquet hall, the two of them walking shoulder to shoulder outside.
“You just came out like that, aren’t you worried your father will have something to say about it later?” Bai Jue eyed the snow-covered bench but didn’t sit down.
Black Jack laughed it off, “They’re used to me running away halfway through the party by now.”
“With so many pretty little sisters inside, what’s the rush to come out?” Bai Jue shook off the snowflakes on him, teasingly.
Black Jack,”If you like them, you should go back in.”
Bai Jue chortled sheepishly.
Those teary little girls were too troublesome for his liking.
“By the way, I heard that Grandpa Jian brought his two grandchildren along today. I heard a lot about them in the banquet hall just now. It’s the first time Grandpa Jian has let his grandchildren show their faces in public, and they’re said to be very delicate-looking, just a bit quirky in temperament.”
“Grandpa Jian’s two grandchildren are, I believe, twins, and I’ve heard my grandfather mention them before. Apparently, Grandpa Jian only found them not long ago and he treasures them dearly,” said Black Jack.
“I’ve been here for quite a while but haven’t seen Grandpa Jian’s grandchildren,” Bai Jue looked around curiously, “Have you seen them?”
“No,” Black Jack shook his head.
Bai Jue was surprised, “You haven’t seen them either? That’s strange. Where could they be hiding? I just saw Grandpa Jian in the banquet hall; he must not have left yet.”
“Just ask a servant, and we’ll know,” Black Jack suggested.
“True.”
After asking several servants, the two finally learned of Jian Qing’s whereabouts and went straight towards them.
The snow gradually lessened, the ancient tree branches were bare, the snowy ground was covered with fallen yellow leaves, adding a touch of desolation to the snowy scene.
“Black Jack, do you think that child over there might be one of them?” Bai Jue, with his sharp eyes, spotted a small figure sitting under the ancient tree bench and nudged Black Jack’s arm.
Black Jack followed his gaze and saw a thin silhouette, and those chestnut-colored strands of hair.
“Let’s go take a look.”
Black Jack would never have imagined that a mere whim of curiosity could so thoroughly tie his fate to another person’s.
“Hey, kiddo.”
Bai Jue’s outgoing nature made him popular wherever he went.
To him, any child younger than him was a kiddo.
The boy sitting on the bench had his head down, playing with a magic cube as if he hadn’t heard Bai Jue’s voice at all, completely disinterested in Bai Jue and Black Jack’s sudden arrival.
Bai Jue’s first reaction was that this kiddo was really cold.
Not the pretentious kind of cold arrogance, but the kind that completely isolates oneself from others, as if he was right in front of them, but they couldn’t enter his world.
Bai Jue and Black Jack exchanged a look, then plopped down on the bench, which prompted the previously unresponsive boy to suddenly stand up and retreat a few steps back as if seeking refuge.
The corner of Bai Jue’s mouth twitched slightly, “…”
Was he a contagious disease or did he really need to avoid him that much?
At this moment, Bai Jue and Black Jack also got a clear look at this little dumpling’s features. His skin was very pale, an unhealthy kind of pale, yet very delicate. A pair of bright and clear eyes like obsidian shone with an unapproachable aloofness, his cherry-pink lips slightly pursed, and his chestnut hair glittered under the golden light.
He seemed quite afraid of the cold. While other kids were dressed in little suits, perhaps with an overcoat at most, this little dumpling was dressed in a sweater, a scarf, an overcoat, not missing a single piece, all in beige, making him look like a plump Sweet Rice Dumpling.
Black Jack’s deep blue eyes fixed on him, landing on the magic cube in his hands which was restored to its original state, the corners of his lips lightly curling.
This Sweet Rice Dumpling was quite interesting.
“We mean no harm, are you Grandpa Jian’s grandson?” with every step Bai Jue took forward, the boy retreated one step back.
Finally, Black Jack couldn’t stand it anymore and pulled Bai Jue back.
Bai Jue wasn’t annoyed and introduced themselves, “I’m Bai Jue, and he’s Black Jack. What’s your name?”
The boy gripped the magic cube tightly, his eyes cautious like a deer’s as he watched Bai Jue and Black Jack, then turned and walked away.
“Hey, don’t go.”
Bai Jue, who was tall and had long legs, quickly blocked his path in two or three steps.
“We know your grandpa, why are you here alone? Are you lost?”
The boy still said nothing, and Bai Jue scratched his head helplessly.
This kiddo couldn’t be mute, could he?
At this point, Black Jack also walked over.
He looked down at the boy with a rare smile on his face, “Is the magic cube fun?”
The boy’s defenses were too strong, his clear eyes shifting between Black Jack and Bai Jue before retreating further in his little snow boots.
The snow on the ground was too thick, and he was wearing far too much clothing; he lost his footing and fell down, the magic cube flying from his hand.
Bai Jue was stunned, expecting him to cry like those other delicate kiddos, but in the next second, the boy got up from the ground, without crying or fussing.
“Your magic cube.” Black Jack picked up the cube and handed it to the boy.
The boy met his deep blue eyes but ultimately still didn’t reach out to take back the cube.
