Chapter 453: Chapter 207: Path of the Strength God
Lu Hong transformed into a shooting star, locking onto the assassin ten miles away, who also sensed him and readied for battle.
As the target came into view, Lu Hong swung his Blood Holy Sword, and a long river of qi and blood slashed down from nowhere.
The opponent was greatly alarmed, not even having the time to marvel at the overwhelming power contained within, as the stones at his feet surged, bound together by the Earth Element, and transformed into a hundred-zhang-tall hand that faced the sky, attempting to lift the Blood River that Lu Hong had slashed down.
In the blink of an eye, the two’s skills collided, creating a thunderous explosion.
The Blood River was repelled, and Lu Hong staggered back several steps, while the assassin’s giant stone arm also shattered inch by inch. The recoil made him grunt as if he had taken a heavy punch.
"Were you sent by the Hall of Strength to kill me?" After a single exchange, Lu Hong gauged the opponent’s strength, which wasn’t as disturbing as he had worried, so he grew suspicious of his identity.
"I am a trialist," the opponent replied decisively. "You offended Elder Hu. Elder Hu hired me to kill you on the Canglan Path. After the deed is done, he promised to help me pass the final trial and vouche that I could become his disciple."
Lu Hong chuckled, "I’ve only met that Elder Hu once. As for deep hatred, at most we just dislike each other. Do you think I’m worth him paying such a price to eliminate me?"
"I also know it’s unlikely, but I have to try. Even if he gives me a little aid, I’ll have a chance to pass the seventh, eighth, and even the ninth trials to become a disciple of the temple."
"You are quite honest, but unfortunately, I cannot comply with your wish," Lu Hong gripped the Blood Holy Sword tightly as the power of his qi and blood surged through his body once more.
"I know, I know, but I’ve done nothing wrong. I hope you won’t hate me." As soon as the opponent finished speaking, a magic aura burst forth under Lu Hong’s feet.
It seemed that he had started cheating even as they conversed. Lu Hong was startled, and the power of his qi and blood immediately shielded him.
In the next second, countless rocks were stirred up and hurled at Lu Hong, exploding upon hitting the wall of qi and blood, creating a massive shockwave.
For someone proficient in the Earth Element, this was an excellent place to fight, where every stone could become a weapon against the enemy.
Against the opponent’s relentless barrage of stone projectiles, Lu Hong dared not be careless and directly invoked Holy Light, bringing down the Heavenly God once again.
The assassin, who had been dwelling in the Canglan Path for a long time, evidently did not understand the story of this Holy Light. But when he saw that Lu Hong completely disregarded the projectiles and charged at him, panic flashed in his eyes. He quickly drew his weapon, with the Earth Element coursing through his entire body, turning into an armor that protected him all around.
"Kill!"
Lu Hong shouted and brought his swords down heavily.
The opponent raised an earth shield to withstand the impact, and the immense force caused the ground to crack, throwing rocks into the air.
Seizing the opportunity, the assassin infused magic power into them, "Explode!"
Another round of stone projectiles exploded. Unfortunately for him, the completely magic-immune Lu Hong once again ignored the attack and kicked the assassin in the chest.
The struck assassin staggered back, his earthen chest armor shattering upon impact.
"Who are you?!" Realizing Lu Hong’s immunity to magic, the assassin trembled with fear, knowing that without magic enhancement, he wouldn’t stand a chance.
"I am Baron Yitian, Tu Kulou."
As he spoke, Lu Hong landed three consecutive strikes that broke through the opponent’s defenses, and his sword plunged into the assassin’s chest.
"Yi..., Yitian..." The assassin vaguely remembered hearing the name, which was a legend brought by trialists who had arrived in recent years.
Not giving him a chance to think more, Lu Hong stirred up his qi and blood to shatter the opponent’s heart and pulled out the Holy Sword; the body collapsed with a thud.
Sheathing the Holy Sword, Lu Hong looked down at the dead trialist and said softly, "Sorry."
Lu Hong had done nothing wrong. Accepting Elder Hu’s task to assassinate him meant being ready to be killed in turn; everyone had their reasons to survive, and if Lu Hong had shown mercy and let him go, there might come a more targeted enemy next time.
After blowing a pit with his qi and blood, Lu Hong buried the opponent inside. Just then, a milky white beam of light shot up into the sky—an alarmingly large disturbance. Lu Hong glanced worriedly towards the direction of the first trial, hoping it wouldn’t attract too much attention.
When Lu Hong returned to Auli’s side, the little girl had already completed her class change. A faint Holy Light was hidden underneath her skin, and a mysterious divine pattern condensed on her brow, dizzying and soul-weakening to anyone who gazed at it for too long.
Seeing that Auli was well, Lu Hong then looked at the Holy King, who was in a much worse state. His soul, once full under Lu Hong’s care, was now as withered as a piece of discarded paper, wrinkled and unable to stand steady.
"Hey! Are you alright?" Lu Hong asked as he transferred vital energy to replenish the Holy King’s vitality.
"Still...," after receiving help, the Holy King barely clung to life. "I’m still alive. I almost thought I was going to die. This girl’s constitution is even stronger than I had imagined. The Great Bright Heavenly God actually used me as a medium to impart knowledge to her personally."
"The beam of light just now was the Heavenly God’s descent?" Lu Hong’s face grew solemn. After confirming with the Holy King, he immediately put him in a Space Ring, then quickly picked up Auli and hurriedly escaped from the scene. The event of a Heavenly God’s descent was too significant to go unnoticed by the temples, and they would surely send someone to investigate.
Sure enough, within half an hour of Lu Hong’s departure, Elder Hu of the Divine Power Temple was the first to arrive, and the powerful figures from the Dark God Temple followed close behind.
"Elder Hu, did you find any nice treasures?" asked a Dark God Temple figure, whose movements were elusive, landing behind Elder Hu with a sinister and soft tone.
"Elder An, you’re only a step behind me. Could I possibly hide anything from you right under your nose?" Elder Hu didn’t turn around; he seemed quite satisfied with the other’s position and had no desire to see him.
"Oh, our Elder Hu is quite capable, isn’t he? How could I, a junior, presume to guess his thoughts?"
"Stop the chatter. Have you noticed anything?"
Elder An sniffed the air around them: "There’s a most unpleasant smell."
What the Dark God Temple found unpleasant was likely the force of Holy Light.
"It’s strange, why would a Heavenly God of the Light series descend in my Divine Power Path?" Although Knights could undergo Body Refinement, they had better options, such as the First Divine Path, the Golden Temple. Other than the Earth Knights who cultivated the Earth Element, no profession with the power of Holy Light would be so mixed up in the Divine Power Path—that would be a waste of their own time.
"Why don’t you ask Huang Zong?" Elder An suggested with a gesture, and as if mentioning Cao Cao, Cao Cao appeared.
The Elder of the Golden Temple, Huang Zong, arrived from afar with the other Hall Masters, landing next to Elder Hu.
"Elder Hu, we sensed the presence of a Heavenly God’s descent here. Do you perhaps know the details?" Huang Zong’s expression changed as he spoke, not waiting for Elder Hu’s response. He turned to the other Hall Masters: "Gentlemen, this matter is likely related to our Golden Temple. I must ask you to step aside. I, Huang, shall offer my apologies another day."
"Since Elder Huang has spoken, we shall take our leave." The other Hall Masters did not linger. Seeing that those surnamed Hu and An were not fighting, they assumed there was nothing to discover, and readily accorded face to Huang Zong, taking their leave.
Once everyone was gone, Huang Zong asked with relief, "Elder Hu, I ask you, has a Heavenly God of Light series recently descended here?"
Elder Hu felt slighted by Huang Zong’s decorum and couldn’t be bothered to deal with him, and so he retorted, "Ask Elder An."
Elder An had intended to leave with the other ten Hall Masters, but was stopped by Huang Zong’s gaze, and now, faced with his questioning, could only reply, "Yes, I sensed the descent of a Heavenly God of the Light series. The residual Holy Light is very rich, yet it’s somewhat different from the divine forces I’ve encountered before."
Huang Zong nodded, feeling the same: "You were the first to arrive. Did you discover anything?"
"Nothing. The person fled quickly, leaving no trace," said Elder Hu. "You just said that this matter relates to the Golden Temple. I didn’t want to intervene, but since it occurred within the Divine Power Path, our Divine Power Temple deserves to be informed."
Huang Zong didn’t argue, simply nodding, and looking at Elder An, "You may leave as well."
"Tsk!~" With a pout, Elder An transformed into a gust of wind and drifted away.
Once assured that Elder An was out of earshot, Huang Zong continued, "Since this event occurred within the Divine Power Path, the Divine Power Temple indeed has a right to know. This matter is connected to an incident that happened in our Golden Temple fourteen years ago. I believe Elder Hu has heard of it."
"That incident?" Elder Hu was stunned. "Do you think it was that female infant?"
"Correct. This cursed child carries the Hall Master’s lineage, possessing the purest Holy Light lineage under the Star Sea. It’s only fitting for a Heavenly God to descend for her. Hence, I ask the Divine Power Temple to help our Golden Temple investigate further. Find this child within the Divine Power Path, and if successful, our Golden Temple will be most grateful!" Saying this, Huang Zong spread his Divine Soul to sense his surroundings, his gaze fixed on a location where Lu Hong had fought earlier. "It seems there was a battle here."
"I had investigated when I arrived—it was just an ordinary battle among Trialists, unrelated to the Heavenly God’s descent."
"Good." Huang Zong accepted Elder Hu’s explanation and spoke again: "This matter is of great importance; I must return to the temple immediately to inform the Saintly Mother."
With that, Huang Zong took out a Gold Order: "This is a token of my trust for Elder Hu. I ask you to be earnest in this matter, to share the Saintly Mother’s concerns."
This token was very significant. Elder Hu smiled as he took the order: "Of course. The Golden Saintly Mother is a first-rate powerhouse of the thirteen temples; to share her concerns is the duty we, the temple Guardians, must fulfill."
