Chapter 295: Chapter 50 Methods
He Li quickly delivered the goods to the storehouse of Raoxue Castle and left without exchanging a word with Lu Hong, apparently considering Lu Hong unworthy of his conversation. Of course, Lu Hong wasn’t keen to interact with him either, noting everything in his little notebook, and planning to beat him up once he regained his strength.
"Back already?" The old steward Gui Sheng seemed to have heard some noise and hurried to the storehouse, looking at He Li who was leaving he asked, "Did Kaif help you with purchasing the goods?"
"Yes."
Seeing Lu Hong nodding, the old steward rubbed his fingers together with a sly smile, as if to say, "Shouldn’t you..."
That greedy old man!
Lu Hong didn’t care much about a few silver coins and took them out to give to him, "Here, take these."
"Not bad, quite appreciative." The old steward’s smile grew as he took the silver coins and cheerfully continued, "The young lady seems to have gotten injured a bit. Go to the second cabinet in the third row of the alchemy room, and fetch a magic potion for her recovery."
"Oh, sure." Following the old steward’s instructions, Lu Hong headed into the pitch-black fortress. Truthfully, Raoxue Castle was huge, and with only three residents including Lu Hong, most areas were always idle, like the alchemy room Lu Hong was heading to, where the spiraling staircase was old and creaky. Each step squeaked, occasionally startling the small animals lurking around, like rats maybe?
Lighting a lantern, Lu Hong reached the door of the alchemy room, and with a gentle push, the door collapsed onto the ground, stirring up a noseful of dust.
Brushing away cobwebs, was there even a need for the steward’s instructions? This row of shelves had only one vial of magic potion left.
Taking the potion, Lu Hong was ready to leave, but a notebook on the desk caught his attention.
He stepped forward, flipped it open, and found it contained documents about Raoxue family’s past research on the Seven Deadly Sins!
Lucky him! Just as he was worrying about how to solve his problem, a solution presented itself.
Thoroughly reviewing the notes of Raoxue’s ancestors gave Lu Hong a deeper understanding of the Holy Court.
Holy Court was older than the Eagle Alliance, but they never took part in external wars, and even the Sacred Empire knew little about them.
Holy Court was powerful, exuding an extraordinary strength. Each member of the alliance had to send one direct family member to them for learning and improvement, which could also be seen as sending hostages. After decades of training in Holy Court, these family hostages were transformed into fervent believers of the Court, loyally supporting Holy Court. At that time, Holy Court would send them back to their families in exchange for another hostage, and these fervent believers would then shine in their families, competing for family resources and power. Many would become the next Clan Leaders, securing Holy Court’s control over most of the families in the Eagle Alliance.
Naturally, such a transcendental entity as Holy Court was internally divided into three major factions; the first faction were the bishops as leaders, the second were the judges who held the supervisory work within Holy Court, possessing the power of life and death over members of the Holy Court, and the third and weakest faction consisted of the lower-level family alliances within the Court.
Each Clan Leader of the Raoxue family had been a Daylight Knight with the judges, a central force within the judges, but from the notes, it seemed the Raoxue Daylight Knight had long been leaning towards the lower-level alliance, tasked with researching how to decipher the bishop’s sacred artifact, the Seven Deadly Sins.
The iron nail that pricked Lu Hong was one of the Seven Deadly Sins held by the bishops of the Holy Court, featuring skills to break all defenses and a powerful corrosive ability that corroded all the strength of those it pierced.
Of course, Raoxue’s ancestors didn’t think this power was unbeatable; they just hadn’t found a way to cope with it yet.
After generations of the Raoxue family and hundreds of years of effort, they finally found a way to counteract this power using the null energy emanating from the Zone of Death.
The western expedition that had started from Raoxue plane was actually covertly initiated by the Raoxue family to cover up their search for the null energy.
The expeditions of the past years weren’t without survivors, the only one who returned alive was an ancestor of the Raoxue girl, who came back secretly and hid in the castle, painstakingly researching for decades until he found a method to counteract the corrosion, and his result was embedded in the crystal necklace passed down in the Raoxue family.
What? Lu Hong suddenly remembered the pendant hanging in front of the girl’s chest—was it inside that thing? How would he get his hands on it?
Closing the notebook, Lu Hong retraced his steps out of the underground, carrying the magic potion as he knocked on the girl’s room door.
"Who is it? Is it Uncle Gui?" The girl’s voice sounded weak yet still pleasant.
"It’s me, miss," Lu Hong said, "Uncle Gui has gone to prepare lunch, and he asked me to bring you the magic potion from the alchemy room."
"Oh, come in then."
Getting the girl’s approval, Lu Hong pushed open the room door, and the girl had just put on a jacket, her glittering pendant flashing before him.
The girl waved her hand, "Give me the medicine."
"Yes." Lu Hong hurried forward, his eyes continually darting towards the pendant at the girl’s chest.
After a good while had passed, Lu Hong still did not feel the young girl take the magic potion from his hand. Puzzled, he shifted his gaze from the pendant and saw the girl’s face filled with anger as she gritted her teeth and said, "Pervert!"
"No, no, it’s not, I..."
He couldn’t finish his sentence.
"Slap!"
After lunch, the old butler looked at the swelling on Lu Hong’s face and asked in confusion, "What happened to you? Who hit you?"
"Nothing." Lu Hong lowered his head and continued washing the dishes. "I fell."
How could he admit to being mistaken for a pervert?
"Fell?" The old butler was skeptical. "How could a fall result in five marks? You must have been hit."
"Who would hit me? There are only three of us in this castle. The young lady is so gentle and lovely, how could she hit someone? It was definitely my own doing, I fell, for sure."
"Yes!" The old butler nodded. "You’re right, it wasn’t me, and the young lady couldn’t possibly do it, so a fall... it really doesn’t look like one, oh! I get it! You hit yourself!"
Lu Hong was speechless. What kind of bizarre reasoning was that?
"Everyone has their little quirks." The old butler patted Lu Hong on the shoulder. "I understand, you don’t need to explain."
Explain my foot!
Just as Lu Hong was about to say something else, the old butler suddenly stopped his work and tidied up his attire. "Someone’s come, I have to go greet them."
This butler was really something; seemingly not strong, yet he knew everything that went on within the castle.
Lu Hong also put down his work and followed to see. The old butler opened the castle’s grand doors, and indeed, the alchemist who attended last night’s banquet was standing at the entrance.
Upon seeing the old butler, he began, "I heard that the Queen of Raoxue had been injured by a demon beast this morning, and I specially brought some medicine to visit."
"Please come in." The old butler bowed slightly and led the alchemist inside, then turned to Lu Hong and whispered, "You take the guest to the reception hall to wait, I’ll go inform the young lady."
"Alright." Lu Hong approached the alchemist and said, "Please follow me."
"Thank you." The alchemist, very polite, followed Lu Hong to the reception hall.
Adeptly, he poured a cup of tea and handed it over, "Please wait a moment."
The alchemist took the cup with a smile, "No rush, no rush."
While saying this, he openly sized up Lu Hong: "Why are you wearing a mask?"
Lu Hong found a random excuse, "I’m too ugly, afraid I might scare people."
"I see." The alchemist nodded and then asked, "You haven’t been at Raoxue Castle for long, have you?"
"Less than a week."
"How do you feel about serving a young girl?" The alchemist’s tone was somewhat sharp, as if probing Lu Hong.
"It’s alright, sometimes I think it’s quite nice," Lu Hong shrugged, an indifferent expression on his face.
"Have you ever thought about taking over as the master of this castle?" The alchemist sipped his tea, a smile playing at the corner of his eyes.
"Oh? Why do you say that?" Lu Hong was intrigued, even though he didn’t know the alchemist’s intentions, a casual chat was still enjoyable.
"Hehe, I was just asking casually, don’t take it seriously," the alchemist set down his teacup and did not say more.
Since the other party wouldn’t speak up, Lu Hong wasn’t in a hurry either. If the other party really had any moves to make, they would surely contact him again, right?
