Chapter 294: Chapter 49: Life as a Manservant (Part 2)
The Alchemist crept into Raoxue Castle at night. The behavior of the Deputy City Lord of Raoxue City was strange—whatever power he used to strike at Lu Hong must have been instructed, a probe to test the waters.
Kaif kept a close watch on the young girl’s comings and goings, hinting that this small Raoxue plane was not as peaceful as one might imagine.
As Lu Hong pondered, a disturbance seemed to arise within the small town.
"What’s happening out there?" Lu Hong asked.
With a chuckle, Kaif replied, "It should be my aged son’s return from the hunt, and the demon beast he’s killed this time must be quite valuable."
"Oh?" Lu Hong said curiously, "May I ask how you exchange the spoils from these demon beast hunts for wealth?"
"On the third day of each month, we hand them over to Gui Sheng, who tallies our goods and calculates a fair price. The Queen of Raoxue then exchanges the corresponding money and supplies with us."
Through Kaif’s explanation, Lu Hong roughly understood—the girl was a Third Transition powerhouse. Although she couldn’t traverse planes, she must have something to rely on, a magical artifact which allowed her to travel to other planes and trade the materials from demon beasts.
"So, you’re saying... the prices are all controlled by the Queen of Raoxue?" Lu Hong persisted.
"Indeed," Kaif nodded. "The exchange rates for demon beast materials are posted on the bulletin boards around town, and if we want to obtain a magic weapon, those prices will be recalculated upon the Queen’s return from her travels."
This was a monopolistic business! Lu Hong couldn’t help but speculate that the Queen of Raoxue must be suppressing the exchange rates, causing the townspeople to toil in their hunts only to receive a meager income, fostering resentment in their hearts.
Fair! Connecting these dots made Lu Hong feel his intelligence rise steadily higher, steadily growing to meet the standard of a qualified transmigrator.
"Shall we go take a look?" Lu Hong suggested with a smile.
With a gesture, Kaif said, "Please!"
The two left the teahouse, and by this time, the returning hunter was already surrounded by townsfolk.
The thick scent of blood wafted into Lu Hong’s nose. Following Kaif, the villagers naturally parted ways for them, showing that this Deputy City Lord held a high reputation in the eyes of the people.
Parting the crowd, Kaif’s son stood arrogantly atop the head of the demon beast, a display of showmanship.
An eighth-level Ground Brown Bear; a brute with immense strength, rough skin, meaty body, high physical resistance, and high magic resistance—it was a troublesome challenge amongst Second Transitions.
"Kaila!" Kaif scolded, "Who gave you permission to provoke it?"
"Father?" Kaila, not receiving praise and instead facing rebuke, was perplexed.
"Haven’t I told you before? Don’t provoke that demon beast?!" Kaif was stomping with anger.
"But I have already killed it, can it come back to life?" Kaila said, feeling wronged.
"Right, City Lord, the brown bear is dead, why blame the Young City Lord?"
"Exactly, that brown bear made its den outside our city, we were all too scared to go out. It’s good that it’s dead."
"Good my ass!" Kaif shouted, glaring at the villager who spoke up, "Remember! I am the Deputy City Lord, Raoxue City has only one Lord, only the Queen of Raoxue! And, Kaila is not the Young City Lord!"
"We... we understand," the villagers retreated in fright, not even daring to breathe heavily.
Regaining his composure, Kaif turned to Lu Hong, "My apologies for the scene."
"It’s fine, but I too am curious why this brown bear could not be killed?"
Kaif sighed, "This brown bear has parents, both tenth-level demon beasts."
"Ah?" Kaila now regretted his actions. Tenth-level demon beasts, equivalent to a Third Transition powerhouse—besides the Queen, who else in the Raoxue plane could handle them?
As they spoke, a roar of anger came from the plains hundreds of meters away.
Kaif’s face turned pale, "It’s the brown bear couple."
"Dad! Let’s fight them!" Kaila drew his war blade and shouted.
"Fight what?!" Kaif snatched the weapon from his son’s hands, then turned to the others, "Why aren’t you quickly inviting the Queen of Raoxue?!"
"No need, I am already here." Before anyone knew it, the young girl had already levitated into the air, heading towards the city outskirts.
The two third-tier brown bears followed the scent all the way, violently charging the simple walls of the small town.
"Ice!" the girl chanted softly, and an ice wall suddenly rose from the ground. The brown bear crashed into it as if hitting an iron plate, its head reeling from the impact.
"Considering the difficulty of your cultivation, retreat now, and I may spare your lives," the girl shouted fiercely.
The brown bear knew all too well that its cub was dead. The enraged couple, devoid of pointless roars, lit up with yellow magic power, and earth spikes shot up from the ground, aiming to kill the girl.
"Stubborn and foolish!" Blue light blossomed in the girl’s palm, as a huge ice flower instantly bloomed, blocking all the bear’s skills.
Since the fight had started, the girl was no longer merciful. Waving her magic wand, snow began to fall from the sky, and the temperature plummeted rapidly, but none of this affected the town within. Lu Hong, watching from a distance, couldn’t help but feel sorrowful—when would he ever recover his strength?
The bears’ ability was clearly not limited to this. The couple’s bodies swelled as they braved through the girl’s snowstorm skill in attack.
Indeed, a thick hide was no joke. The damage caused by the blizzard was nearly zero. The only benefit was that it slowed down the enemy’s speed, enabling the girl to nimbly dodge their attacks.
Dodging the male bear’s claws, the female bear let out a sonic wave bullet, and the girl quickly raised an ice shield to block it. Taking advantage of this opening, the male bear attacked again, its heavy paws striking the ice shield and sending the girl flying.
Not giving the adversary a chance to breathe, the female bear once again summoned her magic power. Earth elements surged, melting a patch of muddy swamp right where the girl would land, dragging her into it. The mud then solidified, emitting a strong glow.
"She’s been hit." Lu Hong thought to himself that this was bad. The next second, a tremendous roar resounded outside Raoxue City, but fortunately, the city was protected by a formation, sparing it from harm.
But the girl wasn’t so lucky. Having taken a combination of punches from the brown bear couple, she was bound to have suffered some damage.
"Damn beasts!" Anger filled the girl’s tone. She rarely found herself in such a sorry state, especially in front of all the town’s residents. Wasn’t this tarnishing the reputation of the Raoxue family?
Back in the sky, the girl’s body showed several black marks, evoking pity in onlookers.
Spreading her palm open, a clear crystal hovered above it. Then, drawing upon the magic apparatus’s power, the girl desperately channeled her magic power: "Absolute Zero!"
The brown bear couple sensed a significant threat. Digging their feet into the earth, earth elements burst forth, forming a thick protective membrane over the bears.
Crack... crack...
Alongside the unfolding of the girl’s skill, the brown bears were tightly enveloped in ice, turning into two massive ice sculptures.
Having done all of this, the girl appeared quite exhausted. She landed on top of the brown bears’ heads, and addressing the residents of Raoxue City, she said, "The brown bears have been subdued by me. But they are not dead, do not approach the ice sculptures." With that, she rose again and flew back to the castle.
"Thank you, City Lord, for the rescue; we are eternally grateful!" Kaif led the way, kneeling on the ground and bowing toward the girl’s departing figure.
"Thank you, City Lord, for the rescue; we are eternally grateful!" The other villagers also knelt and bowed in unison, following Kaif’s lead.
Lu Hong just stroked his chin, thinking that the girl seemed to be at the elementary level of the Third Transition. Struggling so much against two brown bears, her combat ability didn’t seem very strong.
After the girl had left, He Li had also prepared the list of items and arranged a small cart in front of Lu Hong.
"My lord, all the items you need are ready. Would you like to check?"
"No need," Lu Hong took the cart. "Thank you, Deputy City Lord Kaif, for your help. Just call me Lu Hong from now on; I’m not used to being addressed as ’my lord.’"
"Lord Lu, you will surely become the steward of the Raoxue Castle. You will be in charge of the submission of resources; it’s appropriate to address you as ’lord’." Kaif chuckled.
Lu Hong shook his head: "Not necessarily." To be honest, if he were to replace the old steward upon his departure, it would take at least three to four years. Besides, staying here was only temporary. As soon as he found a way to restore his strength, he wouldn’t want to stay a day longer!
"Hehe, travel well, Lord Lu."
"Right." Lu Hong took a deep breath, eh?
The cart felt kind of heavy? It didn’t move.
Let’s try that again.
Eh?
It still didn’t move?
What in the world is so heavy?
By this time, the nearby residents could no longer hold back their mocking laughter.
Kaif, also smiling, said to He Li: "Help Lord Lu move these things to Raoxue Castle."
"Yes," He Li took the command, effortlessly lifted the handle, and the cart moved away.
"Uh, thanks," Lu Hong’s face flushed red. How embarrassing! Just hold it in! Hold it in! Just put it down to another small note.
