Chapter 288: Chapter 43: The Heavenly Son Guards the Gates of the Nation
"Hold the line, damn it, hold the line!" Questasa screamed at the top of his lungs from the towering earthen walls as one squad after another of soldiers rushed up to the wall’s edge, while earth mages desperately reinforced the walls to withstand the onslaught of the tides.
On the other side of the wall, tens of thousands of sea creatures launched ongoing attacks along the vast coastline against the Sacred Empire’s last line of defense.
This battlefront stretched for ten thousand miles, with every available force deployed on the walls. The Ice Snow Shrine, Nature Sect, Disaster Church, Black Guards, and numerous smaller organizations and powers joined in the Empire’s defense; every moment saw countless lives lost.
Konstantin stood at the highest point of the Imperial City, looking down at the battle with an indifferent gaze, yet his clenched fists gave him away.
Yes, he didn’t want to lose; the Empire had thrived for millennia and could not perish in his hands.
But what could he do? The seven Tower Masters, the Empire’s strongest combat power, were of no use.
"Your Majesty." At that moment, an old minister knelt before Konstantin, "Please, you must evacuate immediately. As long as you remain, the Empire will not fall."
Konstantin wore a bitter smile, "Ridiculous, I, an Emperor of a generation, must flee like a coward? What kind of ruler would that be? Besides, without the foundation of divine blessing, do you think we can subdue the realms under our control? In such a war of survival, eighty-three realms watch our defeat without sending aid. If we retreat to the Immovable Throne, that would be the true end."
"But..." The old minister still wanted to argue, but was silenced by Konstantin’s gaze.
This time, the Prolocutor family put everything on the line, amassing all their strength just to barely hold the line; it was clear how strong the sea creatures really were.
Suddenly, a massive wave a thousand feet high roared towards them; it was Nathias, leading three sea realm elite fighters charging straight for Konstantin.
"Stop them!" The commanders of the Demon Slayers and Devil Hunters legions turned to break through the sea creatures’ encirclement and rushed towards Nathias.
The wave composed of pure magic power smashed down like a giant’s palm, tearing open a breach in the thousand-foot wall.
Nathias wielded the Sea God Trident, each attack conjuring draconic water-thunder. With just one strike, he obliterated hundreds of Third Transition Early Stage warriors nearby.
"Kill!" A furious roar echoed to the skies imbued with endless magic power. Nathias stood on the wall, locking eyes with Konstantin.
"Here I wait for you," Konstantin declared, gripping the Holy Emperor Sword and plunging it into the ground. A golden light tore through the night, illuminating the sky. With the blessing of the Holy Light, the Empire’s dwindling morale revived. As long as the sea creatures remained in the water, they received divine blessings, with an endless supply of magic power. Thus, their vitality was tremendous; without overwhelming them, defeat was certain.
Now, with the Holy Emperor Sword’s power unleashed, humanity also received the ancient blessings, boosting each person’s strength by at least ten percent.
"The Human Empire indeed has something left, but as long as we take down the human king, we will have won." The whale-shark elite Beidi stepped forward, and ripples of seawater spread, freezing hundreds of soldiers charging in as ice sculptures that shattered to the ground.
"Let’s go, capture him." Sharp Tooth, the top warrior of the whale-shark tribe, grabbed a spear and leaped off the wall, cutting a bloody path through the troops.
Nathias glanced back as the commanders of the Demon Slayers and Devil Hunters legions were closing in, thus turning to Beidi and asking, "Which one of them are you stopping?"
Beidi took a deep breath; truthfully, the two Great Commanders, Demon Slayer and Devil Hunter, were not weak. He and Nathias paired two on two were not afraid, but facing either one alone would be a struggle.
The sea creatures’ decapitation plan involved deploying not less than thirty top warriors at the Third Transition Peak. Except for the three of them, the rest were intercepted by various Imperial forces; against Konstantin, no one dared say that just one peak warrior could accomplish the task.
"Let me handle it," Beidi said solemnly, "But don’t disappoint me."
Nathias patted him on the shoulder, "Don’t worry, I’ll ensure we complete the task the queen entrusted to us. Just make sure you hold on and don’t die."
"Of course, I’m a formidable contender for the next Sea War God. I won’t die before I defeat you." Beidi took a step back, turned to face the two Great Commanders.
His eyes emitted a deep blue light, and the roaring seawater boiled even fiercer.
"Secret Technique, Torrential Kill!"
The tsunami roared deafeningly and transformed into two colossal beasts a thousand feet high, crashing into the two Great Commanders with full force.
Secret Skills weren’t easy to deal with; the two commanders dared not slack off. In this brutal battlefield, a severe injury meant not only failing to aid Konstantin but likely death as well. With a change of thought, their steps slowed, as Beidi’s full-force strike barred their progress.
Nathias leaped off the city wall, rapidly approaching Konstantin along the bloodied path Sharptooth had carved.
Seeing soldiers dying in vain at the hands of two elite sea warriors, Konstantin’s expression was sorrowful. Even with the Empire’s combined might, they couldn’t stop the sea creatures’ experts; and bear in mind, the sea realm was simultaneously at war with the Snowy Region. The mere half of their peak strength outnumbered the Empire by double—what did this represent? It was a crushing scenario.
"Everybody, stand aside. Let them come," Konstantin shouted, but unfortunately, the emperor’s orders lost their power at this moment. Every Empire soldier knew that Great Emperor Konstantin was the Empire’s pillar; as long as he stood, so would the Empire.
"Sworn to share life and death with the Empire!" The soldiers shouted bravely, charging to their deaths to drain Nathias and Sharptooth’s magic power. With no seawater around to replenish them, every ounce drained increased Konstantin’s chance of victory.
Nathias and Sharptooth combined their twin blades; to confront Konstantin, the sea creatures employed their strongest duo. Ordinary soldiers couldn’t withstand even a single move from them and in mere breaths, they reached Konstantin.
"Human Emperor, your journey ends here," Sharptooth’s spear tip touched Konstantin’s throat, requiring just a bit more force to end his life.
"Is that so?" Konstantin remained fearless, his eyes downcast.
"Certainly, I’ll grant you a swift death," Sharptooth chuckled. "Your city-protecting formation, which you relied on for dominance, has long been unraveled by the queen. Without the formation’s suppression, you’re nothing but a Second Transition weakling. What? Do you dread dying?"
"Why don’t you try," Konstantin sneered. "To attack my Sacred Empire without understanding humanity’s foundation is the height of stupidity."
"You’re seeking death!" Sharptooth thrust his spear with force, yet the anticipated scene didn’t occur. A faint golden light enveloped Konstantin, rendering Sharptooth’s Divine Artifact unable to penetrate even a fraction.
"Everyone thinks that the Human Great Emperor can only manage state affairs, the weakest of the divine-graced Empires, but do you know it was by leading his troops that the Great Emperor expanded the land?" Konstantin’s tone was calm yet subtly filled with fury.
Nathias suddenly realized something amiss and swiftly pulled Sharptooth three steps back.
A tremendous power emerged from within Konstantin, reaching the Second-Transformation Peak, rising to Third Transition, First Level, Third Transition, Second Level, Third Transition, Third Level... until reaching the Third Transition Peak, all at a rate visible to the naked eye. At this moment, Konstantin’s level was not inferior to Nathias at all.
"The human race indeed still holds a few tricks." Sharptooth wasn’t afraid, instead laughing as he licked his lips as if seeing a delicious meal. "I’d love to see how much real combat skill a ruler who only manages state affairs possibly retains!"
Once the words fell, Sharptooth charged forward, his spear unleashing a flurry of icy sparks.
Nathias followed closely, flanking Konstantin.
"Then, see for yourselves!" Konstantin shouted, his voice ringing powerfully as golden ripples fanned out like a mountain pressing down on the pair.
"Torrential Kill!" Sharptooth activated his Skill, releasing high-speed water streams that shattered Konstantin’s golden ripples. Nathias then wielded his trident, tugging down divine thunder to strike their opponent continuously.
Konstantin swung the Holy Emperor Sword, and wherever its blade swept, nothing was left. The Holy Emperor Sword was a Divine Artifact created through the collective efforts of humanity before the founding of the Sacred Empire, infused with blessings from all the human Heavenly Gods, far surpassing the Sheh family’s national artifact.
The void the sword penetrated was a tear in space itself; Nathias and Sharptooth’s Skills, without exception, were all drawn into the spatial chaos, unable to harm Konstantin in the slightest.
"How can this be?" Nathias looked utterly shocked. Could this weapon truly be so formidable?
"Be patient, listen carefully," Sharptooth said sternly. "His breathing is uneven."
Nathias nodded, "Indeed, it seems activating this Divine Artifact demands a significant cost from him."
"Then let’s exhaust him," Sharptooth smirked, then morphed into countless afterimages, encircling Konstantin in a manner that seemed like there were hundreds of spears attacking simultaneously.
"Get lost!" Konstantin whispered, swinging the Holy Emperor Sword down heavily. Sharptooth felt as if a world bore down on him, his knees buckling, only managing to withstand without collapsing under extreme duress.
"Rage Tide Style!" Nathias wielded the trident, launching an intense assault.
Konstantin recognized the intricacy of the weapon and met it with his sword.
A low thud echoed, pounding at all hearts on the battlefield, injuring every single one.
Nathias and Konstantin each took several steps back, though Nathias might not unleash the full potential of the Sea God Trident; its power was undoubtedly on par with the Holy Emperor Sword, both being powerful relics from the Era of the Gods.
This realization finally allowed Nathias to breathe a sigh of relief; there was hope as long as the Sea God Trident could deplete Konstantin.
Yes, as long as Nathias endured, Konstantin would be exhausted to death.
But, similarly, each clash exerted immense pressure on both sides. Konstantin wasn’t at ease, nor was Nathias. If Konstantin held firm, it wouldn’t be him who would collapse.
Clang.
Clang.
Clang.
With every clash, tens of thousands of lives faded silently away. For anyone below the Third Transition, the battle between these Divine Artifacts was a nightmare; they wouldn’t withstand three of such shockwaves, dying from ruptured organs.
After seven successive clashes, Konstantin bled from all seven orifices, with Nathias left with barely a breath, half-kneeling on the ground, using four arms to support himself from falling, while the remaining two arms trembled as they gripped the trident.
"Ha, ha, ha, you’ve lost!" Konstantin wiped away the blood.
Sharptooth, lying closest to the fight, was gravely injured, muttering, "Nathias! For the queen! For the sea creatures, do! Not! Fall! Down!"
"For... the sea creatures!"
"For... the queen!"
"I..."
"Cannot lose!" Nathias forced out his final strength, rushing madly at Konstantin.
With a lamentable cry, the trident flew three feet away, half-embedded in the ground, while its owner collapsed powerlessly, having lost two arms.
"I..." Konstantin could no longer bear it either, collapsing to one knee, "won..."
As Konstantin declared triumph, the entire human race celebrated; the decisive battle against the sea creatures had finally seen the dawn of victory.
But at that moment, a crystal-clear silhouette slowly emerged above the sea water.
Konstantin raised his head, staring wistfully at the form, terrified, "Naga... Naga... the queen!"
