Chapter 103: Chapter 101 Bai Tianhang’s Invitation
After dealing with Sa Re, Lu Hong felt refreshed as if he had just finished a dungeon and defeated a boss. Although he hadn’t obtained any cool equipment, having traveled through the border forest, Lu Hong was already very clear about his location. Since this place resembled a dungeon in the game, it was very likely to contain a powerful item that Lu Hong was aware of—the Eye of the Demon Ancestor.
After the Second Transition, Lu Hong was able to use magic items, so he was very interested in such powerful items. In a past game, a thief had used this mighty item to kill players of higher levels almost effortlessly, and even Lu Hong had been tricked by this "godly" item before.
Lu Hong thought it over briefly. Since he had already lost touch with Luo Yi Si and Luo Bolun still harbored murderous intentions toward him, it would be better to go somewhere else first. Since Luo Yi Si dared to return to the wilderness plane, she must have had means to secure her own safety, so there was no need to worry about her for the time being.
After making up his mind, Lu Hong continued deeper into the border forest, planning to cross straight through it to reach the Demon City territory.
With Sa Re’s death, the large number of soldiers who hadn’t been killed by Lu Hong were confused without instructions from their superiors. And Lu Hong decided not to target them anymore. The purpose of killing Sa Re’s subordinates was to reduce their numbers; after all, if there were too many soldiers around Sa Re, it would have been difficult for Lu Hong to break through their lines to kill Sa Re, and he would eventually get tired from slashing.
Enhanced in physical abilities, Lu Hong sped through the forest like lightning, darting around so fast that the demon beasts only felt a gust of wind blow past. When they looked around, they spotted no trace. Just when they lowered their guard, a streak of red light flashed by, and the demon beast’s head was separated from its body.
It was better to kill any passing demon beasts, as they were all experience points, which Lu Hong needed to level up, especially since after each promotion, the required experience was almost three times more than before.
"I really don’t know when the next upgrade will be," Lu Hong muttered. After three days and nights of non-stop travel, he finally reached the other side of the border forest, the outskirts of the Demon City.
Like the human Red Kingdom, there were no defenses at the border of the Demon City. It seemed that neither side was worried about surprise attacks from the forest, suggesting that some kind of agreement had been reached.
Having smoothly crossed the Demon City border, Lu Hong followed his memories of the game dungeons and easily arrived at a city within the Demon City territory—Evil City.
"Pay up!" At the gate of Evil City, two demon soldiers didn’t even glance at Lu Hong as they blocked his way with their weapons.
Although this was demon territory, humans could be seen everywhere. The wilderness had developed over many years and no longer clung to racial barriers; some humans held significant power in the Demon City.
"How much?" Lu Hong asked, taking out a gold coin. Entering a city should cost just one gold coin.
To his surprise, the demon soldier demanded greedily, ""Well... ten gold coins!"
"You want to say that again?" Lu Hong’s expression grew cold, realizing he was being seen as an easy target.
"What are you looking at! I said ten gold coins!" The demon soldier was not intimidated by Lu Hong’s cold stare and retorted fiercely, "What? You, a mere human, dare to cause trouble in Evil City?!"
"What if I do?" Lu Hong raised an eyebrow; he had already reached the Second Transition by now. In this wilderness plane, not to mention being invincible, his speed alone made catching him a rarity. While he may not be the best in a fight, his ability to escape was peerless, so he wasn’t afraid of offending people.
"Looking for death!" The demon soldier roared, thrusting his spear towards Lu Hong.
Just as Lu Hong was preparing to retaliate and kill, suddenly a pale arm blocked his view, grabbing the demon soldier’s spear.
"Cough, cough... can you give me some face?" The pale youth covered his mouth, blood dripping, speaking weakly.
"Who are you? Why should I...?" The demon soldier attempted to pull his spear back but found that the seemingly frail youth was surprisingly strong.
Before he could curse out loud, the other demon soldier by his side recognized the significance of the youth and quickly held back his companion, saying, "Since it’s Young Master Bai asking, naturally we won’t pursue this matter," even bowing to his companion.
Young Master Bai?! Realizing with his comrade’s hint, the demon soldier quickly released his weapon and backed away, looking terrified of the title.
"My friend, let’s go inside." Having dealt with the demon soldiers, Young Master Bai turned to Lu Hong and said, "Some things have happened in Evil City recently, leading to an unexpected rise in hostility from the demons towards humans. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have troubled you."
"Thank you," Lu Hong nodded, accepting the young man’s kindness, and followed Young Master Bai into Evil City.
After the two had walked a distance, the demon soldiers whispered to each other, "That’s Young Master Bai? The human who has held the position of law enforcement officer in our tribe since he was young?"
"Of course, aside from Young Master Bai, who else could make it impossible for you to draw your weapon with his sickly body?" Another demon soldier spoke with a hint of fear, "In the demon realm one can provoke any human, but not this Young Master Bai. He is someone who can decide our life and death with a single word."
As they entered the demon city, Lu Hong curiously asked Bai Tianhang, "Friend, how do humans fare in the demon realm?"
"My name is Bai Tianhang, you and I are of similar age—you need not call me Young Master Bai." Bai Tianhang coughed up a mouthful of blood tinged with chill, wiped his mouth, and continued, "Initially, humans in the demon realm weren’t treated poorly. Although they couldn’t obtain a status equal to demons, most of the time the demons treated them fairly and equally. However, three months ago, during a ceremony in Winterfell, the Demon King Yan was attacked by a human of unknown identity and almost lost his life. Since then, the demons have harbored significant hostility towards humans."
"So that’s the situation," Lu Hong nodded and then, out of politeness, asked Bai Tianhang, "My name is Tuku Lu. I notice that your physical condition doesn’t seem very good."
"Yes, when I was very young, I was attacked secretly, leaving me with a cold illness."
"Was it a Mage of the ice type?" It must definitely be a Mage’s skill to leave someone with a cold illness.
"No," Bai Tianhang shook his head, "I don’t know if you, Brother Tuku, are aware of the underworld?"
"The underworld?!" Lu Hong was stunned. The underworld was a legend in an old game and had never been discovered or opened by anyone. This was the second time he’d heard about the underworld.
"Judging from Brother Tuku’s expression, it seems you know something about the underworld." Bai Tianhang smiled, "The injuries and illnesses I suffer from were inflicted when I was a newborn by an official from the underworld during an attack."
Lu Hong had also heard of these underworld officials. It was said that they were the soul collectors of the underworld, roaming the outer realms to collect valuable souls to take back to the underworld.
"It seems you are quite valuable, to have an underworld official come to collect your soul," Lu Hong said, intrigued, looking at Bai Tianhang whose youthful face seemed to hide a great secret.
"Perhaps," Bai Tianhang smiled faintly, un-opposed to Lu Hong’s presumption, "It was also thanks to my father’s timely discovery and rescue that I was saved from the underworld official. However, it cost my father his life to save me."
"I’m sorry," so his life was fought for, Lu Hong expressed his condolences.
"It’s okay, it’s okay, all these are past matters," Bai Tianhang shook his head and stopped walking, then asked, "May I know what brings you to the evil city, Brother Tuku?"
"Just looking for something. Thanks to Brother Bai for helping me out this time," Lu Hong felt it was time for them to part ways.
However, Bai Tianhang did not seem willing to part ways just yet and with a slight smile, he made a proposal to Lu Hong, "I have a business proposal here. Would you be willing to join in? The rewards after completion are substantial, and I can arrange for information about what you’re looking for, which will certainly be faster than searching on your own."
"Do you know me?" Lu Hong could tell from Bai Tianhang’s words that this man must know him, or else what kind of deal could he so casually ask someone to join?
"Of course, I have had the pleasure of witnessing the elegance you displayed in the border forest," Bai Tianhang replied.
"Oh?" Lu Hong smiled and said, "You know what I did in the border forest?"
"Although the demons don’t guard the border forest, it doesn’t mean they don’t monitor the area. Coincidentally, I am in charge of supervising there, which is precisely why I’ve witnessed your formidable combat capabilities," Bai Tianhang spoke as a group of white-clad guards surged from all around to swiftly clear out the residents on the city’s major streets, creating an absolutely quiet zone for the two of them.
"So my entry into the city was a set-up?"
Bai Tianhang shook his head, "From the moment you stepped into the demon border, I’ve been watching your movements. I had been thinking of how to approach you, but that scene just then gave me a perfect opportunity."
Hearing Bai Tianhang’s explanation, Lu Hong was fairly satisfied, at least the approach hadn’t been cunning.
Lu Hong accepted Bai Tianhang’s honesty and goodwill, "What business, let’s hear it." However, whether he would participate depended on the benefits Bai Tianhang could offer.
"Seize the demon realm’s governing power, control the demon city!" Bai Tianhang’s eyes narrowed slightly, his pale face showing a ruthless expression.
Done for! He’s in deep trouble!
After hearing this, Lu Hong regretfully wanted to die. He had thought it was some kind of treasure-hunting adventure, but it turned out to be a power struggle play? Now, even if he doesn’t get involved, he’s already in trouble; some things can’t just be heard and forgotten.
