Mercenary’s War
Chapter 525 - 525 521 One Step One Kill

525: Chapter 521: One Step, One Kill 525: Chapter 521: One Step, One Kill The location where Cui Bo was positioned was ideal for using Directional Mines.

It was precisely because he had pre-emptively set up two Claymores that Cui Bo had managed to hold out until now.

However, both Claymores had been expended, and Cui Bo’s defensive position was a narrow strip less than ten meters wide, and even if Glolov and his men charged up to reinforce the position, it would still be a situation where both sides would inflict casualties on each other, pitting numbers against numbers.

Gao Yang immediately said in a deep voice, “Big Dog, take some men to provide cover.

Rabbit, retreat and set up a second line of defense.

Patrol personnel in other directions should make their own judgment.

If the outpost can be abandoned, bring Claymores to the second defensive line to buy time for the evacuation of the wounded.”

Not knowing how many enemy forces there were, the only option was to call back anyone who could reinforce and then organize the evacuation of the wounded as soon as possible.

Glolov and those who had already arrived immediately began to provide suppressive fire on the enemies up the slope, while Cui Bo had been in his defensive position for half a month and was extremely familiar with the terrain, so much so that he could run down blindfolded.

The problem, however, was that the enemy had cut off his escape route, and leaving cover would almost guarantee being hit by bullets.

On the radio, Glolov shouted, “Rabbit, hold on.

We’ll press the enemy down so you can retreat!”

“Don’t come up here!

There’s no cover, coming up here is suicide, don’t come!”

Cui Bo immediately rejected Glolov’s suggestion, but if Glolov and the others didn’t come up, Cui Bo’s safe withdrawal would be very difficult.

Gao Yang, cradling his Blade of Satan, was already running towards Cui Bo’s position.

After reaching the bottom of the slope in one breath, Gao stopped in a spot with a good view and began aiming up the slope.

The enemy was on higher ground, holding the terrain advantage, but the slope jutting out from the cliff was mostly rocks, and since the area received a lot of rainfall, soil could not retain on the steep slope, making it unsuitable for vegetation.

Thus, there were no large trees on the narrow slope, only low shrubs.

Gao looked upwards.

If someone wanted to climb the slope, they would have to leave the dense jungle, exposing themselves to his gun.

But for the moment, no one was visible on the slope; they were hiding within the dense jungle.

Unless the enemy mounted another assault, Gao would have difficulty finding a target.

Moving forward, he reached a pile of rocks where only low shrubs could grow.

Gao also stopped, settling on the edge of the dense jungle, and immediately began to affix a thermal imaging scope onto his rifle.

The thermal imaging scope works by detecting temperature differences, and then displaying the temperature variation imagery.

Thus it works not only as a night vision device at night but can be equally useful during the day, assuming the temperature difference isn’t too small.

At night, with the human body being at least 36 degrees Celsius and the surrounding environment cooling down, the difference in temperature is stark, making it easy to discern thermal images of human bodies.

During the day, as long as the background temperature isn’t too high, the thermal imaging scope can also reveal human silhouettes.

Gao had never used a thermal imaging scope during the day in his previous combat experiences because the conditions at the time didn’t allow it.

When the ground temperature under sunlight reached a blistering forty to fifty degrees Celsius, the heat emitted from human bodies wouldn’t show up on the scope.

But now it was different; it was morning, and the temperature hadn’t risen too high.

Moreover, within the forest where the sun couldn’t reach, the temperature was even lower, so the thermal imaging scope would definitely work.

After attaching the thermal imaging scope and powering it on, Gao waited shortly for the device to respond.

When images began to appear in his scope, Gao smiled in satisfaction.

He could indeed see figures skulking near the cliff.

If the enemy moved deeper into the jungle, the effectiveness of the thermal imaging scope would be significantly reduced.

However, if they wanted to attack Cui Bo, going too deep into the jungle would render them unable to shoot.

So, they would have to be on the edge of the jungle, in the place where Gao could detect them.

Cui Bo was already in grave danger.

His cover, built on a protruding part of the mountain, was only thirty-some meters away from the cliff, roughly two meters lower than the relatively flat ground above the cliff.

Beyond that, the slope steepened sharply, dropping rapidly in height.

With just about thirty meters’ distance, Cui Bo was unable to cross.

Gao had spotted four figures in front of Cui Bo, and without hesitation, he started shooting.

It felt like a long time since Gao had last fired a sniper rifle, as he had never had the opportunity to use one since arriving in Colombia.

Gao fired four shots in succession, bringing down all four figures that appeared in his scope.

Within the Satan Mercenary Corps, Gao’s primary role was actually that of a Marksman, because he didn’t just shoot accurately, but also very, very quickly.

What’s more important, he was able to shoot rapidly while maintaining extreme precision, or rather, he could shoot with stunning accuracy at a rapid-fire pace.

Shooting quickly wasn’t Gao’s greatest skill, nor was shooting accurately his greatest skill.

Shooting both quickly and accurately, especially with a sniper rifle— that was Gao’s greatest ability.

Shooting quickly and accurately, not being a Marksman would be an injustice to his skills.

Providing effective cover for comrades engaged in fierce frontline combat and inflicting maximum damage on the most threatening enemy targets is the principal duty of a Marksman.

Everyone has a role that suits them best, and while Gao Yang was capable of doing many things, there was no job more fitting for him than being a marksman, nor was there anyone more suited to the role of a marksman than Gao Yang.

After firing several shots and killing the several men about to charge at Cui Bo, Gao Yang swiftly swung his gun towards the enemies on the edge of the cliff, extending shots to the side.

The enemies there could fire at Cui Bo from both flanks and from behind, cutting off Cui Bo’s retreat.

With just one gun and by himself, Gao Yang could only shoot from one side first, so he habitually chose the left side.

The scope, with its infrared thermal imager installed in front of it, had a comparatively small field of view.

Gao Yang swept his gun from right to left, and whenever a red silhouette appeared in the scope, he fired a shot, with the gunfire followed by a person dropping or instantly stopping their movement, because some were already lying on the ground firing.

Since he had to find a spot with fewer plants that wouldn’t interfere with his shooting, Gao Yang’s position was almost a hundred meters from the cliff.

This was not the most advantageous fighting distance for Gao Yang because the enemy could still shoot at him, and it was too close for rapid target acquisition given the narrow field of view of the scope.

However, it was definitely within Gao Yang’s strongest shooting range.

Besides the initial four shots, after each subsequent shot, Gao Yang would immediately shuffle a couple of steps to the left or right before continuing to fire.

His movement greatly reduced the chances of enemies pinpointing his shooting location, but it hardly affected his rate of fire since he searched for targets while on the move, stopping to take a shot upon spotting a target.

Even though it was daytime, hidden behind the vegetation, neither side could accurately observe the other, which is a characteristic of jungle warfare.

Thus, the people who came to reinforce Cui Bo could only blind-fire at the cliff.

This could create a suppressive effect, but it wouldn’t inflict effective damage on the enemy.

Even someone as formidable as the machine gunner Glolov could not precisely shoot at people he couldn’t see.

The same was true in reverse.

The enemies on the cliff had the geographical advantage, but they could only shoot after observing movements.

With each step came a kill.

Every time Gao Yang fired, someone was hit, and he never missed.

When the magazine was empty but there was still one round left in the chamber, Gao Yang took out a full magazine, quickly replaced it, and once again moved his gun.

He discovered that he could no longer see any trace of the enemy in his scope.

Gao Yang lowered the gun and visually inspected the area then aimed to the right, preparing to repeat the process.

But just as he had detected a new target and fired from his scope, he noticed his target fall on their own.

Shortly after, Gao Yang heard a series of gunshots.

The gunshots came from a position not far to his right.

Gao Yang took a couple of steps and saw a silhouette standing and firing.

They were using an MSG-90 semi-automatic sniper rifle, or rather, a marksman’s rifle would be more appropriate, and the shooter was from the Angel Mercenary Corps, one of the severely wounded members who had been resting at the temporary camp with them.

Gao Yang didn’t speak.

He raised his rifle again and resumed firing, and then, the sounds of two semi-automatic rifles alternated.

Continuing to fire on the move, Gao Yang noticed several times that both he and the Angel marksman were hitting the same target, a downside of not having an understanding and predefined areas of responsibility.

Just then, Gao Yang suddenly heard Cui Bo scream through the earphone, “RPG!”

A rocket was incoming.

Gao Yang instinctively dove to the ground, and it was only after the explosion of the rocket that he realized it had been fired from the left side he had just cleared.

Gao Yang immediately said, “Prince, I’ll take the left, you take the right.”

After stating that and dividing their respective areas of responsibility, Gao Yang quickly aimed his gun back to the left.

After a brief search, he fired a shot, and then, a rocket was fired straight to a position below the cliff where he had just killed a shooter who was about to launch a rocket launcher.

As Gao Yang swept back and forth, looking for potential new targets, the marksman to his right continued to fire.

Gao Yang silently estimated the speed of the gunshot sounds and concluded that the person’s firing rate was almost equal to his own.

“Right side clear!”

Soon, the gunshots on Gao Yang’s right ceased, and after hearing the report from the other marksman, Gao Yang urgently said over the radio, “Rabbit, retreat!”

Cui Bo tumbled out from his hiding spot and then scrambled down the slope, as Glolov and the others simultaneously locked down the area behind Cui Bo with their fire, forming a barrage.

The barrage posed no threat to those on the cliff, but anyone daring to come out would run straight into it.

Gao Yang still surveyed his left flank, guarding against the appearance of anyone who could threaten Cui Bo, and indeed, some tried to emerge, but they posed no actual threat to Cui Bo after Gao Yang shot twice.

Under everyone’s cover, Cui Bo scrambled down without a scratch.
