Gao Yang and the others held their guns, watching as Teodulo and his men raised their weapons above their heads and gradually emerged from the three-story building.
Only twelve people remained.
Holding an M16 rifle among the crowd, Teodulo put his gun down on the ground, then walked to the side with raised hands.
At that point, all he desired was to slip through unnoticed and survive; he had no other thoughts.
Teodulo’s wish was indeed beautiful, but unfortunately, Gao Yang and his team specifically targeted him, and Teodulo’s distinctiveness made blending in an impossibility.
When Gao Yang saw Teodulo’s face, his heart blossomed with joy.
He had not feared that Teodulo had been killed in the previous battle; his worry was that Teodulo might be buried under the rubble or disfigured beyond recognition.
Now that Teodulo had surrendered alive, that saved them a great deal of trouble.
“Toad, Teodulo has surrendered.
Tell Lucica and her team to come over.
You and Test Tube keep an eye out, just in case any fish slip through the net on your side.”
After notifying Li Jinfang, Gao Yang, without changing his expression, watched as Teodulo lay down his gun and obediently stood in the yard.
Only then did Gao Yang stand up, enter the yard, and point his gun at Teodulo before shouting, “Is there anyone else in the house?
If so, they’d better come out quickly.
In two minutes, we’re going to blow up this building.”
The surrendered men lined up, and the one at the forefront nervously said in English, “There’s no one inside, no living people left.”
Gao Yang did not rush to expose Teodulo’s identity; he planned to wait for Lucica to come over and then identify Teodulo.
“Tell your men to lie down, hands on their heads.
Whoever raises their head gets shot dead.” Gao Yang barked sharply.
After being harshly scolded, the English-speaking man stuttered, “My name is Ferenio, the highest commander here.
We have surrendered.
Please don’t harm us.
Our boss is willing to pay you a ransom for our safety.”
Gao Yang knew that what Ferenio was saying was true; if he could hold these people, he would certainly receive a substantial ransom.
As long as the conditions were set and Teodulo could afford them, he would definitely be willing to pay, because Teodulo himself was among the captives.
It was clear Teodulo was willing to spend money to save his life; if Teodulo hadn’t been among the prisoners, Gao Yang would have been shocked had Teodulo agreed to pay a dime for ransom.
Gao Yang neither confirmed nor denied it but loudly ordered, “Get down, and don’t make me repeat myself.”
After talking to someone beside him, the dozen or so prisoners promptly lay down, and even as Ferenio pressed his face to the ground, he still said to Gao Yang, “You can take everything here.
We have a great deal of cash and are willing to put it all forward to show our sincerity.
In addition, if you let us leave, you will receive even more money.”
Gao Yang had never considered taking a ransom for holding Teodulo.
When you are a mercenary, you need to adhere to mercenary ethics.
If the task was to kill Teodulo, then they needed to kill Teodulo.
Even if letting Teodulo live could bring in more money, it was not an option.
If a mercenary group took money from an employer to kill the employer’s enemy but then the enemy offered more money and they turned around and killed the employer instead, who would dare to hire such a mercenary group in the future?
Gao Yang certainly wasn’t going to damage his own reputation by engaging in such activities.
Letting Teodulo go for more money was out of the question, but if they could get more money while still completing the mission, why not?
This kind of money was certainly welcome.
Gao Yang immediately said into his walkie-talkie, “Toad, quickly stop Lucica and the rest from coming.
I’ll notify you when to let them come over.”
After speaking with Li Jinfang, Cui Bo also approached Gao Yang and whispered, “Brother Yang, I want to go look for Chameleon.”
Gao Yang nodded and said, “Go ahead.
Have Little Fly go with you.
Be careful, there might still be some who aren’t dead.”
Cui Bo tilted his head at Frey, and then the two left the yard and ran to the neighboring one.
After Cui Bo had gone, Gao Yang turned interestedly to Ferenio and loudly asked, “You have cash here?
That’s very good, very good.
How much money do you have?”
Ferenio immediately replied, “We have nearly five million US dollars in cash.
The exact number is four million seven hundred thousand US dollars.
If you collect from the bodies and the living, you should exceed five million US dollars, all in cash.”
Gao Yang clapped his hands and said, “Good, very good.
Go get the money.”
After speaking, Gao Yang said to Tommy and Glolov, “You two go with him to get the money.
Be careful.”
Glolov set down his machine gun, drew his pistol, and after nudging Ferenio with his foot, loudly declared, “Stand up, take us to the money.”
Ferenio got up from the ground, casting an imperceptible glance at Teodulo, and compliantly led the way for Glolov and Tommy into the three-story building.
Sirte stood beside Gao Yang, his face relaxed, while Teodulo repeatedly sneaked slanted glances at Sirte but dared not lift his head.
Gao Yang had been paying attention to Teodulo; upon witnessing his actions, Gao Yang knew that Teodulo recognized Sirte or at least his clothes and weapon.
The Angel Mercenary Corps’ uniforms were uniform, and having had many dealings with them, it would have been strange if Teodulo hadn’t recognized Sirte.
Gao Yang didn’t care whether Teodulo recognized Sirte or not; if Sirte didn’t care, then he cared even less.
Since Teodulo maintained his silence, he might as well remain silent, as his fate was sealed anyway.
After waiting a couple of minutes, Lucica and her group of five approached.
Arriving at Gao Yang’s side, Gao Yang didn’t speak and merely gestured for Lucica to stand aside and wait a bit longer.
While Gao Yang and the others waited for Glolov and Tommy to return with the money, Cui Bo and Frey were silently searching for Chameleon.
Cui Bo didn’t know if Chameleon was already dead.
His principle was to see the person if alive, the body if dead, but having walked twice among the yard’s corpses, he had not seen anyone in a white shirt.
Chameleon was easy to identify; despite the numerous bodies in the yard, finding one in a white shirt should have been simple.
Not discovering Chameleon’s body in the yard meant he must have escaped.
While searching for Chameleon, Cui Bo and Frey continuously delivered the coup de grâce to the still-breathing wounded.
After walking around the yard twice, Frey shook his head at Cui Bo, saying, “Rabbit, we’ve delayed too long; Chameleon might have run away.”
Cui Bo looked at the two nearly collapsed wooden houses and said gravely, “People can hide in the ruins.
Chameleon might have run away or might be hiding inside.”
Glancing at the ruins, Frey said, “A thorough search of the ruins will take a long time, but all right, I’ll join you.
Before Boss orders us to retreat, I hope we have some results.”
With many gaps in the mortar shelled wooden house, Cui Bo wasted no more words.
He immediately approached the ruins, preparing to start the search.
Though he felt the chances of finding Chameleon under the debris were slim, he couldn’t be at ease without looking.
Focusing first on gaps readily accessible from the yard, Cui Bo had taken just two steps when he heard a sound nearby like a metal sheet had been hit.
A shiver ran through Cui Bo, and after making a gesture to Frey, the two hurried towards the source of the sound.
Under a large piece of metal roofing, there was a small space.
Cui Bo didn’t rush in; it was too dangerous.
Picking up a piece of broken wood, he signaled to Frey and then tossed the wood into the gap.
As soon as the wood landed inside, the sound of pistol shots rang out continuously from the space.
It was Chameleon hiding in the gap, his legs severely injured.
Although he wasn’t dead, he wanted to escape from the back wall but couldn’t even stand, let alone climb over the wall.
So, he hid in a hole covered by the ruins, hoping to escape this way.
However, Chameleon swore he hadn’t moved at all, but the metal roofing above him inexplicably made a noise, leading to the inevitable.
Gao Yang heard the gunfire from the yard across the street.
He immediately shouted into the radio, “Rabbit, what’s happening?”
“We’ve got Chameleon, and he’s still alive!”
Surprised, Gao Yang thought it wasn’t strange that Chameleon was alive, but the fact that they had captured Chameleon alive was remarkable; that was not an easy feat.
It seemed that there was indeed a higher power at work; wicked deeds will eventually backfire.
Cui Bo loathed Chameleon down to his itching teeth; this opportunity allowed Cui Bo to vent his rage.
Gao Yang breathed a sigh of relief, and he was pleased, but observing Ferenio being pointed at by Tommy’s gun and carrying a large bag, and Glolov holding another bag, made Gao Yang even happier.
After dropping the bags at Gao Yang’s feet, Ferenio kept staring at Sirte.
Gao Yang was indifferent.
He snapped his fingers and said cheerfully to Ferenio, “Good, now tell me, can you come up with more money, I mean right now?
If there’s more, perhaps, I might consider letting you go.”
After swallowing hard, Ferenio said, “As long as you let us live, you’ll get more money than this.”
Gao Yang shrugged and said, “You should have heard clearly, I’m talking about money you can produce right now, immediately.”
Without realizing it, Ferenio glanced at the ruins across the street and then whispered, “There’s some money there, probably over a million US Dollars, I think.
I’m not sure, but there should be, on the Phantom Mercenary Group’s men.” (To be continued.
