306: Chapter 304: If There Is Distance, There Is Invincibility.

The rifle looked very old, but Gao Yang found an inscription on the barrel, revealing it to be a Finnish Sako-brand shotgun.

It was still in good shape; despite its age, its accuracy should still be reliable.

Now the only problem was that Gao Yang had to figure out the zeroing distance of the scope.

If he didn’t know at what distance the scope was zeroed beforehand, having a scope would be no better than not having one at all.

Running parallel to the truck, Gao Yang stopped after covering a little more than a hundred meters.

He hid in a pile of bushes and first used a telescope to observe.

Sure enough, the poachers who had stayed behind the thorn wall were now running toward the truck.

Almost every one of them had a gun, and from the view in the telescope, most of them carried AK rifles.

Without spreading out, Gao counted twelve poachers in total.

At that moment, they were about six or seven hundred meters from the truck.

Taking advantage of the time he still had, Gao hurriedly ejected all the bullets from the chamber.

Examining the chamber, Gao found it could hold a maximum of five bullets, which was indeed fully loaded with five rounds.

That meant Gao had a total of twenty-two bullets, which he felt was already plenty to take down twelve men.

Before shooting, it was vital to know the zeroing distance of the scope, meaning the distance at which the crosshairs in the scope coincided with the point of impact.

After knowing this, he could use the scale lines inside the scope for precise shooting.

Gao felt the gun in his hands must have been zeroed, but without knowing the zeroing distance, it was all pointless.

So he had to figure out the zero distance or zero it himself.

To zero it would expose him, but without zeroing, the shotgun in his hands would be as good as a poker for stoking a fire.

After a moment of hesitation, Gao decided to hastily zero it.

Generally, when hunting, the zeroing distance of a scope is typically set at a hundred meters.

Gao aimed for a spot on the truck’s container at that distance and fired a shot, but to his confusion, he had no idea where the bullet went—the truck didn’t show any sign of being hit.

Being only a little more than a hundred meters away from the truck, Gao thought that even if the zeroing distance was two hundred meters, the bullet shouldn’t have missed so far that he couldn’t tell where it went.

Such a close range shouldn’t result in such a large error.

Gao tried zeroing at three hundred meters and fired another shot, but the result was the same—the bullet went who knows where.

Unwilling to waste more bullets, Gao aligned the crosshairs on the scope with the door handle as a reference point and then tilted his head to the side to see where the barrel was pointing.

To his dismay, he nearly snorted in frustration when he realized the rifle had not been zeroed at all.

The dense cross lines in the scope, that is, the crosshairs, were completely decorative, and the scale lines for adjusting up, down, left, and right were haphazardly set.

The barrel pointed high and to the left—if one were to shoot based on the scale lines in the scope, the bullets would not only fly high into the sky but also veer greatly to the left.

In a short time, the poachers had closed in considerably, now only four or five hundred meters away from the truck.

While cursing angrily, Gao quickly adjusted the crosshairs in the scope to at least align with the direction of the barrel, then used the scope to aim at a target point and fired another shot.

Although the point of impact was a whole meter off from the aim point, Gao finally saw where the bullet landed.

Seeing the impact point was the key, and he hurriedly adjusted the scope again before firing another shot.

The point of impact was getting closer to the aim point.

In the meantime, the approaching poachers had not yet opened fire since they didn’t know who was shooting.

However, once they came close enough to understand the situation, they would surely not be so polite to Gao.

Gao needed to hurry, but zeroing a scope wasn’t a job that could be completed swiftly.

He had to keep an eye on the distance to the poachers while also zeroing the scope.

Even in such tense circumstances, Gao stayed calm.

By the time he fired the ninth bullet, and the point of impact stayed within a fist-sized area next to the aim point for two consecutive shots, Gao had finally completed the zeroing of the scope.

The bullets wasted on zeroing pained Gao greatly.

He quickly loaded four bullets into the chamber, by which time the distance between the poachers and the truck was roughly two hundred meters, as Gao had moved laterally from them, they were about two hundred and thirty to forty meters away from him.

At a distance of two hundred meters, a corpse lying in the grass would still be unseen.

Moreover, since the truck was parked tail toward the advancing poachers, they couldn’t see the body in the driver’s seat.

Even though the poachers hadn’t started shooting yet, someone was aiming their gun towards Gao’s location.

At a distance of a little over two hundred meters, they were well within the effective range of an AK47, and the barrage from a dozen AK47s could be very dangerous.

So instead of firing, Gao continued to use the bushes for cover, crawling backwards for a bit before immediately changing direction and running at full speed while crouched.

Gao needed to increase the distance.

After running about two hundred meters, he lay down on the ground again, and almost at the same time, the poachers had spotted the bodies and gunfire erupted immediately.

The poachers were still near the truck when Gao Yang had already covered a distance of more than three hundred meters from it.

Even though he could be shot by those poachers, Gao felt this distance was manageable for aiming his rifle.

With a shot fired, one of the standing poachers immediately fell, and bullets began flying towards Gao.

He reloaded and after aiming at another standing person, he fired again.

After the second person dropped, the remaining standing poachers finally all got down to the ground.

With everyone on the ground, neither side could see the other.

Gao Yang didn’t hesitate and immediately changed direction, continuing to crawl diagonally.

While crawling, he kept looking back, but he could see nothing.

After moving forward for a bit, Gao quickly started running crouched again, covering more than a hundred meters in one breath.

He then stopped, lying prone and seeing nothing, he slowly straightened up and eventually, simply kneeled on one knee, took out his binoculars, and began to observe.

A few of the poachers had given chase.

Gao Yang let out a small chuckle, picked up his rifle, and from a kneeling position fired again.

After he took down another person, the rest hit the ground once more.

Gao estimated the distance between them was now around four hundred meters.

At this range, he didn’t believe those poachers could hit him with their AK47s.

Perhaps the poachers had shotguns, but Gao also didn’t think they had as good a marksmanship as he did.

The reason was simple—if any of them knew how to adjust a rifle scope, Gao wouldn’t have had to go to great lengths to zero the scope of the rifle he had taken from them.

As long as the distance was maintained, those poachers were just lambs to the slaughter.

Gao was very confident of this.

Glancing at a thick, sturdy tree not too far away, Gao trotted over to it with relative ease and took cover.

After checking that no one was standing up to run in his direction, even as the poachers continued to fire blindly, Gao started contemplating how to climb up the tree.

At a distance of over four hundred meters, if the other side had a good marksman, climbing the tree would be suicidal, but clearly, they didn’t have a decent sharpshooter; among the group, none seemed capable of adjusting a rifle scope, which posed no threat to Gao.

In terms of using the naked eye to aim with iron sights, that was a joke.

Not to mention whether the AK47 was accurate enough, at this distance, a person would appear at most as a small black dot.

Gao definitely couldn’t make a precise shot with mechanical sights at this range, and if those poachers could achieve that, he would accept his death.

The tree Gao planned to climb had a high crown, but fortunately, the thick trunk branched at a low point, and then branched successively up to the top where the leaves were.

Such a tree was very easy to climb, most welcomed by leopards who liked climbing trees, as it hardly required an effort to ascend.

After scanning the tree for leopards and seeing none, and observing that the poachers near the truck were still not standing to run towards him, Gao immediately slung his rifle over his back and climbed up to the third branch split in the tree.

Once seated, he steadied his rifle, found an excellent position on an obliquely growing branch, and an ideal shooting spot was formed.

With the high ground, Gao could clearly see the poachers hiding near the truck.

Looking down from above, those lying in the grass or running crouched were all clearly visible.

Filled with a sense of revenge, Gao aimed at a person bent over dragging a body, followed by a gunshot, and after a brief moment, the target in the scope immediately fell.

He reloaded and fired another shot, hitting a poacher floundering like a headless fly, knocking him backward.

Then one of the poachers raised something, likely a binocular, to look his way.

After spotting the person, Gao let out a slight smile.

Another shot rang out, and the man dropped.

The remaining men panicked, with six left.

Regardless of whether they were lying prone or scrambling on all fours, they almost simultaneously took cover behind the truck.

Gao seized the opportunity and fired a shot, but this time he missed, and all six lucky surviving poachers found refuge behind the truck.

The poachers hiding behind the truck, Gao’s ideal shooting position was now pointless.

Just as Gao, in frustration, slammed a branch in front of him and was planning to climb down the tree and change position, he noticed a person entering the cabin, pulling the body in the driver’s seat out.

Gao didn’t rush to act; he aimed at the door.

Although the person entering the cabin hid his body below the glass, making it impossible for Gao to shoot, he believed the man would soon have to come out.

Indeed, after realizing there were no keys in the ignition, the person jumped out of the cabin.

If that person had zig-zagged, Gao might not have taken the shot, but as he watched the man run straight toward the rear of the truck, Gao couldn’t help but fire again, and this time he didn’t miss, as the fellow collapsed by the tail of the truck.

The enemy advances, we retreat; the enemy retreats, we advance.

This was Gao’s tactic.

Guessing that the poachers wouldn’t dare show themselves again, Gao immediately leaped down from the tree and, clutching his gun, started running towards the truck.

Now, the hunter had become the hunted.(To be continued.
