Chapter 1217: Chapter One Thousand Two Hundred: Being One Step Too Late
The plane landed in Denver City, and since it was already late when they took off from Los Angeles, it was night when they arrived in Denver. After leaving the airport, Gao Yang and his group first found a hotel to stay for the night.
Early the next morning, they rented two large pickup trucks and, under Czech’s lead, began their search for Kevin S. Pearson’s wilderness cabin.
Denver is located on the plains east of the Rocky Mountains. Once you head west out of Denver, you immediately enter the Rocky Mountains, the already high elevation rises further, and the temperature drops accordingly.
It was February, and it was already cold, but entering the mountains made it even colder, so Gao Yang and his group could only buy thick clothing before heading further into the mountainous area.
The journey was not short; the place where Kevin S. Pearson lived was quite far from Denver. They first followed the No. 70 Motorway for over one hundred kilometers, then exited the motorway onto a smaller highway for dozens of kilometers, and onto even smaller roads, until they turned onto a small rural road and reached its end, having driven out over three hundred kilometers.
Jack, who was leading the way, stopped the car on the roadside, got out of the car, and began looking around. Gao Yang pulled over, stood beside Jack, and asked loudly, “How about it? Have we arrived?”
After looking around for a long time, Jack nodded and said, “We should have arrived. I don’t remember very clearly; it’s been fifteen years since I last came here. But I think it’s correct. Now, we need to leave the road, and about two miles later, we should be able to see Kevin’s cabin. The good news is we can drive there.”
Gao Yang waved his hand and said loudly, “Let’s go then, it’s almost noon, we need to hurry.”
Gao Yang had only Yelena in his car, and the pickup followed Jack’s car, slowly driving across the highland wilderness.
The view was very open, which also made one’s chest feel open. Gao Yang smiled at Yelena and asked, “Do you like it here?”
Yelena rolled down the window, took a deep breath, and smiled, “I love it here, very much. I love the wilderness, I love the forests.”
Yelena leaned her head against the car window, staring dreamily at the wilderness with an engrossed expression and a smile that came from the heart.
Gao Yang suddenly realized it had been a long time since he had seen Yelena smile sincerely. Yelena used to be a very cheerful girl, but now she was like a bird locked in a cage, under too much pressure.
As long as Gao Yang and Glolov were still adventuring, Yelena could never truly relax. Gao Yang felt somewhat guilty, but he was also helpless; he could not give up too many things.
Gao Yang didn’t comfort Yelena; he didn’t know how to start or comfort her. Before he completely gave up his career as a mercenary, he couldn’t fundamentally solve Yelena’s problems.
At that moment, Yelena suddenly said, “I’ve started to envy Catherine’s job. I don’t know if she is out in the field again; I haven’t called her for some days. Her phone is unreachable. I think, she must be working somewhere out in the field again, and she must be very happy.”
Suddenly, Yelena turned her head, looked at Gao Yang, and said, “Adele is now in the United Kingdom, and I haven’t seen her for a long time. This time we are in Europe, shall we go to the United Kingdom to visit her? She is much better now.”
Gao Yang did not want to mess with Adele; he couldn’t afford to provoke Adele. But since Yelena mentioned it, Gao Yang definitely wouldn’t refuse outright, so he smiled and said, “Sure, if we have time.”
At that moment, Gao Yang saw Jack’s car stop, and Yelena pointed not far ahead to a rising hill, “Look, there’s a cabin on the edge of the woods!”
Gao Yang also saw it, a not-so-large cabin located on the edge of a large pine forest, at the foot of a not-so-tall hill.
The car couldn’t go any further, it was about four or five hundred meters away from the cabin. After getting out of the car, Jack waved to Gao Yang and said, “This is the place, let’s go over.”
“Let’s go, let’s check it out, put on your coat, you know, I’m starting to get excited now, really excited.”
After exchanging a few smiles with Yelena, Gao Yang got out of the car and waited for Yelena to come to his side, then naturally took her hand, and they all started walking towards the cabin together.
Jack was too fat, he started panting after walking just a short distance, at which point Taylor teased him: “Buddy, you really need to lose some weight.”
Jack waved his hand, caught his breath, and looked at the cabin with a puzzled expression, “Something’s not quite right. It seems like there’s nobody inside. If Kevin were here, he would have definitely noticed us by now. He should have come out.”
Gao Yang shrugged and said, “Let’s just go over there and see what’s going on.”
Continuing forward, everyone soon noticed the cabin, which looked somewhat run-down. The grass in front of the cabin was very tall, indicating that it hadn’t been touched in a long time.
Before even reaching it, Jack said disappointingly, “F**k! This place has already been abandoned.”
Gao Yang sighed, “Since we’re here, let’s go in and take a look.”
Upon reaching the front of the cabin, Gao Yang’s heart sank. The cabin was intact, but the glass of the windows was shattered, the door was closed but just loosely fixed, not locked. Outside there was a pile of firewood, which looked untouched for a long time.
Jack pushed open the wooden door, and the group entered the cabin. It was large, divided into three compartments, with furniture like log-made beds and tables and chairs. The compartment that served as the kitchen had a wooden cabinet with its door open, revealing a dozen cans.
“There are cans!”
Cui Bo shouted, he looked in the cabinet and then loudly said, “There’s also a note!”
“If you need help, feel free to take these cans. If you came looking for me, sorry, I don’t want to be disturbed anymore, I’ve moved to a place that’s safer and quieter, Kevin S. Pearson.”
After Cui Bo read the note aloud, he casually handed it to Gao Yang, who, after reading it, placed the note back in its original spot and weighed it down with a can, saying helplessly, “Guys, it looks like we’re one step too late.”
Jack looked utterly disappointed and said, “He didn’t say where he moved?”
Gao Yang spread his hands and replied, “Obviously, Kevin thought this place wasn’t safe enough, and he also mentioned he didn’t want to be disturbed, so of course he wouldn’t tell us where he went.”
“Damn it, oh shit, real damn spooky!”
Jack was even more disappointed than Gao Yang, cursed a couple of times, waved his hand helplessly and said, “Hang on, I’ll make a few calls to friends, maybe someone knows his whereabouts, let’s try it, maybe someone will know.”
