Mercenary’s War -
Chapter 1107 - 1107 1090 Pushing Forward
1107: Chapter 1090: Pushing Forward 1107: Chapter 1090: Pushing Forward Gao Yang hoped that his string of bad luck had come to an end.
If a person has good luck, everything they do turns out right; if they have bad luck, then everything they do goes wrong.
Gao Yang hoped that he would not encounter the misfortune of a parachute not opening again, and wished that no one in Satan’s team would either.
After collecting his parachute, he checked his weapon and thankfully found no issues.
Gao Yang gestured with his hands twice and whispered into his radio, “Confirm our location, determine the direction and proceed.”
With GPS, there was no need to look at a map.
Their location was quickly ascertained.
The drop zone was still far from Aleppo Prison, and Badadi’s position was in the village they had visited before, to the west of Aleppo Prison.
As for the terrain, Gao Yang and his team couldn’t claim perfect familiarity, but it was certainly not unfamiliar to them.
The terrain was wide open, no need to send out scouts.
The ten men spread out, maintaining a certain distance from each other, and jogged towards their destination.
Running fully armed provoked an unexpectedly long-lost sense of thrill in Gao Yang.
He preferred combat in open terrain.
He had always found street and indoor combat in confined spaces particularly annoying.
The main reason was that street and indoor fighting were too taxing.
Even excellent gunmanship wasn’t key to survival, but in open terrain, it was different.
As the saying goes, with distance, Gao Yang was invincible.
It was 2:45 AM.
Gao Yang estimated it would take about an hour to reach the village near the prison.
If the laser could directly identify the target, there would be no need to go into the village; however, if long-distance laser guidance was not possible, they would have to get closer, until they reached an area suitable for ground guidance.
The squad’s marching speed was brisk, and the more Gao Yang ran, the easier it felt.
The run didn’t drain much of his energy; instead, it made him feel invigorated.
Running laps on a track field and sprinting through boundless open fields gave different sensations.
Gao Yang felt as if he had returned to the times when he used to run out hunting.
Gao Yang’s thoughts drifted to his time spent with the Akuri tribe and then to his father.
Memories of his father led him to think of Test Tube, then to Yelena, and starting with the Chieftain of the Akuri tribe, familiar faces paraded through his mind like a revolving lantern.
Why was he suddenly feeling so nostalgic?
Gao Yang himself was curious as to why he was thinking so much on the verge of going into battle.
Shaking his head, Gao Yang refocused on the path beneath his feet, jogging all the way until a black cluster of buildings appeared ahead.
He then raised his right arm, signaling everyone to slow down and proceed with both caution and search.
The visible village was not far away, just over two thousand meters.
At this distance, guided lasers were already feasible.
Gao Yang crouched down, taking a knee, and began observing through the scope mounted on his gun.
The laser could shine far, but at night, the target could only be identified up close enough to hit it with the laser, meaning they had to keep advancing.
After checking that there was no one on the road ahead, Gao Yang signaled, and the team moved on.
As they drew nearer to the village, the buildings became clearer.
To fulfill Polovich’s request, Gao Yang had thoroughly scouted this village or residential area previously, not expecting this knowledge to come in handy again now.
What was more unexpected for Gao Yang was that when they first came, Aleppo Prison had only been besieged for a short time.
Gao Yang hoped that the people in Aleppo Prison could hold out a little longer, ideally until they completed their mission.
As it turned out, the garrison in Aleppo Prison had held out for almost a year.
Now, less than six hundred meters from the village, Gao Yang could occasionally see people moving around the outskirts of the village—enemy sentinels.
It seemed that they wouldn’t be able to approach the target too easily, as Badadi’s location was in the very center of the village, obscured by too many buildings.
Laser guidance from outside the village was impossible; the only option was to risk getting closer.
After observing for a moment, Gao Yang whispered, “Big Bird, launch the drone.”
The drone quickly took to the sky and flew over the village.
Gao Yang quietly moved next to Jansen and watched the drone’s bird’s-eye view on the monitor.
He whispered, “There are not a few enemy sentinels, but there are still gaps.
Unless they have set up covert sentries that can block heat signals, we should be able to infiltrate the village with ease.”
After examining the situation, Glolov said in a deep voice, “Do you think the Rebel Army has the capability to set up covert sentries?”
Gao Yang chuckled and replied, “Not only do I think they lack the proper means, but the Rebel Army even seems to lack the awareness to set up covert sentries.”
Glolov also chuckled and said, “Then what are we waiting for?
Let’s go.”
Gao Yang waved his hand, pointing in a direction where the sentinels were less concentrated and, according to his memory, an entry point from which they should be able to reach Badadi’s location in the village fairly quickly for laser guidance.
Making no noise, Gao Yang and his team started to slowly approach the village.
As they came within a hundred meters, they were crawling on the ground.
The enemy had an ample number of sentinels.
To enter the village, they had to either take out the sentinels or stealthily creep in where the sentinels’ line of sight did not reach.
When they were within fifty meters of a sentinel, Li Jinfang whispered into the radio, “Do we secretly infiltrate, or take out the sentinels first?
The enemy’s sentinel layout has flaws; our front sentinel is not within the sight of other sentinels.
This is a loophole.”
After neutralizing the sentinels, as long as the Rebel Army doesn’t have any hidden guards or won’t change guards soon, Gao Yang and his team could move as though on a freeway, breaking through the defences at the entrance of the village, which also meant they could proceed directly to Badadi’s hideout.
Their entire operation, from entry to completion and extraction, wouldn’t take very long.
Gao Yang thought for a moment and whispered, “Worker Bee, Big Bird, stay outside for support.
Everyone else, split into two assault teams; we’re going into the village.”
After he finished speaking, Gao Yang whispered again, “Toad, take out the sentinel!”
Li Jinfang set his backpack down, slung his rifle behind his back, and began to crawl towards the sentinel.
With no vegetation or buildings for cover, and whilst there was moonlight, it wasn’t very bright; as long as the enemy didn’t have night vision devices, they wouldn’t be able to see Li Jinfang slowly crawling along the ground.
As Li Jinfang got closer to the sentinel, he would stop whenever the sentinel faced him; and when the sentinel turned around or moved away, he’d quickly crawl forward.
Eventually, Li Jinfang paused less than ten meters from the sentinel and lay still, waiting a long time until the sentinel yawned while looking up at the sky, shook his head, and turned to walk away.
That’s when Li Jinfang slowly rose from the ground and stealthily approached the sentinel from behind.
At a distance of only two or three meters, the sentinel might have heard a noise and hastily turned around.
Li Jinfang lunged forward in a swift movement to appear before the sentinel.
By the time the sentinel’s eyes widened at the sight of Li Jinfang, Li Jinfang had already grabbed side of the sentinel’s head.
With a fierce twist, the sentinel might not have even realized what he saw before he slumped to the ground, limp.
Li Jinfang grabbed the sentinel’s neck with one hand to prevent him from collapsing and took the rifle that fell from the sentinel’s hands with the other.
After gently laying down both the sentinel and the rifle, Li Jinfang softly spoke into the communicator, “Obstacle is clear.”
Gao Yang gestured with his hand and softly commanded, “Move.”
The team quickly closed in on Li Jinfang’s position, then used the pathway Li Jinfang had cleared to officially enter the village.
It had been a while, and Gao Yang only had a vague memory of the place he visited once.
After checking a dark corner, he extended his hand and the team turned a corner, heading toward the center of the village.
To venture into the tiger’s den is the only way to capture its cubs.
Gao Yang’s approach was bold to the extreme, as well as perilous.
They had to be wary of the enemy appearing at any moment.
A single gunshot would mean the operation had failed, and they would have to fight their way out of the enemy lair, so their pace could not be fast.
After turning two corners, Li Jinfang, who was at the forefront, stopped and then signaled Gao Yang.
Gao Yang joined Li Jinfang, observed for a moment, then quietly retreated and signaled, using hand gestures to inform Taylor that he could call the planes now.
To prevent the enemy from detecting the approaching fighter-bombers and raising the alarm, the Su-24s were still dozens of miles away in the airspace.
However, for the Su-24s, a few dozen miles could be covered in just a few minutes.
When Gao Yang and his team reached the position to guide the bombing, the planes would also be in position to drop their payload.
Taylor took the microphone and in a very low voice said, “Sea Eagle, respond if you hear this.”
After a short while, Taylor gave Gao Yang an ‘OK’ gesture and then whispered, “Entering the attack zone, prepare for bombing.
Upon command, drop the bombs immediately.
Repeat, enter the attack zone, ready for bombing, drop the bombs on command.
Over.”
After waiting for a little while more, Taylor gestured to Gao Yang again, who then waved his hand, and the team moved forward once more.
Next, they would pass a small street junction.
Gao Yang had taken this road before and remembered it clearly.
Past the street junction was an empty space in the village where Badadi’s house could be seen.
If the house was visible, it meant they could conduct ground guidance for bombing.
Once the bomb was dropped, they would not need to check if the target was hit; they just had to run.
After passing a small junction and entering an alley between two houses, exiting the alley would lead to the open space, a perfect location for guiding the bombing, but also an ideal spot for an ambush.
Entering the village required a point man, and with Li Jinfang present, he was the undisputed choice.
Li Jinfang was the first to leave the alley and took a moment to scan the surroundings before ducking back and nodding.
Taylor immediately turned on his prepared laser designator, which he had ready in-hand, stepped out of the alley next to Li Jinfang, and stepped a few paces forward.
With those few steps, he could directly aim the laser beam at the target intended for bombing.
While Taylor was directing the laser, Gao Yang was to provide cover; he would follow into the open space.
Gao Yang felt uneasy all night, and as he was about to step out of the alley between the two houses, he suddenly felt an extreme discomfort with no apparent reason, which immediately reminded him of the sentinel whom Li Jinfang had killed by breaking his neck.
Gao Yang’s eyes bulged, every hair on his body stood up, and without hesitation, he stopped in his tracks and in a low voice commanded: “Abort mission!
Retreat!
Quick retreat!” (To be continued.
