Mercenary’s War
Chapter 1077 - 1077 1060 Probing Attack

1077: Chapter 1060: Probing Attack 1077: Chapter 1060: Probing Attack “Night Demon Two, spotted the enemy attempting to flee, they’ve been suppressed and pushed back, but you’d better accelerate your attack speed, over.”

After receiving the report, Gao Yang immediately commanded: “Night Demon Four, proceed to block the enemy’s escape route, make sure no one gets away.”

Ludwig’s establishment of a secure passage at the crossroads didn’t actually take up much time, but the enemy wouldn’t need much time to retreat either; a few minutes were sufficient for everyone to get up from their beds and flee for their lives.

The blockade formed by the three helicopters was obviously not enough to keep the enemy pinned down and unable to escape at all times.

From the moment the guided bomb hit, Gao Yang’s responsibility had shifted from ground guidance to frontline commander.

For the time being, he didn’t need to engage personally, but could command the overall situation relying on the view provided by Jansen.

Ludwig’s action encountered some minor setbacks, but it did not affect the overall situation.

Gao Yang spoke earnestly: “Move fast, Falcon Group accelerate your advance.”

Falcon Group had already passed the crossroads, moving quickly along both sides of the street.

Encounters with the enemy occurred frequently, but generally did not affect Falcon Group’s maneuver.

Urban warfare, even with an abundance of forces at one’s disposal, could not permit soldiers to charge en masse unless they intended to be mowed down by enemy machine gun fire in one go.

Since the beginning of the assault, the operation had proceeded quite smoothly without wasting much time.

Falcon Group cleared scattered enemy troops along the way, and occasionally needed to stop and strike at organized enemy fire points.

Nonetheless, it took less than three minutes to advance to a position less than fifty meters from the core battlefield.

With Falcon Group leading the way, Farouk’s special forces team followed closely behind, naturally not running in a cluster.

The path was cleared, but the surroundings hadn’t been cleaned thoroughly.

One wrong move and the enemy could emerge from behind, meeting them face to face with a burst of gunfire.

Hence, they had to follow spread out in skirmish lines.

The dust had mostly cleared, and the enemy’s vision was slowly being restored.

Even without night vision devices, the enemies near the core battlefield already had some visibility.

Falcon Group finally reached the narrowed entrance of the open field.

Advancing further would allow direct attacks on the low buildings where the enemy might be hiding, of course, that would also mean entering the most dangerous zone.

Gao Yang spoke solemnly: “Nightfiend Team move forward, ready to engage at any time, after Nightfiend Team passes through, Scimitar Team tighten the line and advance forward, special forces launch the first assault on the final target, Falcon Group prepare to take over the attack from the special forces.”

The final showdown was approaching.

After taking a deep breath, Gao Yang said sternly: “Is the special forces team ready?”

Farouk replied solemnly: “Ready, please give the order, sir!”

Gao Yang declared gravely: “Go!”

On the display screen, Gao Yang saw someone wave their hand, and then two combat teams, each with ten members, crouched low and hurried along the street.

The core battlefield didn’t resemble a typical residential area.

Two large buildings were located on the southernmost side, then rows of two-story civilian houses on the east and north sides, and on the west side there was likewise a row of two-story residential buildings.

An opening was left in the empty space surrounded by the residential areas.

The core battlefield was not enclosed, nor did it have any walls.

There were gaps between the two-story buildings, though not very wide, still enough for a car to pass through.

In the middle of the building area, there was a space filled with irregular piles of building debris and many shell craters.

This used to be a wealthy residential area with a very good environment.

Although it had been severely damaged since the beginning of the civil war, it still remained the best place to live in the vicinity, relatively less destroyed.

The terrain was very complex, and complex terrain meant danger.

Based on the reconnaissance results and the drone surveillance conducted after Gao Yang and his team arrived, it was judged that the row of houses on the easternmost side of the core battlefield was the most likely hiding spot for the enemy.

Therefore, the two teams initially attacked the row of houses on the east side.

There had been no gunfire from the two large buildings since the beginning.

Two bombs of 500 kilograms each hit in succession, blasting two very large gaps in the buildings.

The entire north-facing wall of the building on the right had almost separated from the structure, piling up a huge heap of rubble beneath.

The two assault teams had reached the field, just on the edge, and then, what was expected finally happened.

Using a half-man tall pile of bricks for temporary cover and observing the surroundings for a moment, a soldier leapt to run towards another pile of debris in front of him.

Just as he got up, Gao Yang saw the soldier stumble and fall.

“Sniper!”

Gao Yang and Taylor almost simultaneously whispered out, and right after they finished, they heard Farouk also roar in the intercom: “Sniper!”

“Where did that shot come from?

Where’s the sniper?”

This was a tough battle, and in a tough battle, there were bound to be casualties.

If the enemy was weak, then it wouldn’t be a tough battle.

Taylor couldn’t help but ask.

Gao Yang didn’t see where the bullet was fired from, but judging from the posture of the soldier as he fell, he knew the sniper’s location.

“Nine o’clock from the man down!

Same elevation!”

Gao Yang was answering Taylor’s question but also alerting Farouk, and most importantly, informing those he had recruited.

Just as Gao Yang finished speaking, another soldier who was lying down leaped up only to be shot down again.

After speaking, Gao Yang quickly asked, “Who’s leading the team?”

“Gale and Alcohol!”

The response came from Alcohol, as Gao Yang could tell by the voice.

After Alcohol responded, Gao Yang saw someone among the people lying on the ground take a shot, followed by Aimer’s voice ringing out.

“Enemy sniper killed.”

The team led by Faru was all newbies, with no qualified squad commander, so during the battle, they were commanded by Gao Yang’s people, the mercenaries hired to fight for him.

Gao Yang couldn’t help but worry.

After spending time together, it was impossible not to form a bond, and upon learning Gale and Aimer were leading the team into the death zone, Gao Yang’s heart immediately tightened.

Aimer’s counter shot seemed to officially open the curtains of battle.

Just after he located and killed the enemy sniper, gunfire erupted.

Bullets fired from three sides rained down on the assault team on the ground from parallel heights.

Bullets fired from the ground floor of the buildings were manageable because Aimer and his team had cover, but gunfire from the second floor posed an instant massive threat, as cover not tall enough couldn’t block bullets from the second floor.

The enemy began to fire intensively, and of course, the friendly forces wouldn’t just stand idly by.

As the hidden enemy started shooting from windows and firing ports, Faru yelled, “Fire, fire!”

The counterattack began almost simultaneously.

Aimer started continuous firing with high efficiency.

As a marksman, each of Aimer’s shots brought casualties to the enemy.

Once the enemy’s position was confirmed, machine guns, rifles, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, and the cannon from the Mi-24 helicopter in the air, all returned fire with violent and furious power, far exceeding the enemy’s mostly rifle firepower.

Gale’s team encountered a hit, but as the enemy also opened fire, they were immediately suppressed comprehensively, failing to annihilate Gale’s team in one fell swoop; however, Gale’s team still suffered significant losses.

Gale’s squad was initially probing for an offensive, and the results of the probing were not good—the enemy was numerous and strong!

Two ten-man squads had at least six hit by gunfire; aside from the two killed by the sniper, another four were hit by bullets.

“I’ve been hit!”

Aimer shouted over the radio.

The one most concerned about Aimer, of course, was his comrade.

Alcohol, the leader of the Firestorm Mercenary Corps, yelled, “Fall back!

I’m coming to support you.”

Gao Yang was the overall commander, responsible for issuing orders, but specifics were left to each squad leader.

Faru’s command structure was the most chaotic, and Marshall’s approach brought too much disorder to the unit.

Gao Yang could command directly, but as the overall commander, he needed to control the overall situation, and he certainly couldn’t neglect other teams to focus solely on the Firestorm Mercenary Corps’ individual combat squads.

Faru could command, but his experience was severely lacking, and he couldn’t issue the most appropriate orders based on the situation on the ground.

Peter could also command with enough experience and ability, but his role as a basic trainer, without ever having led this unit as the overall commander in any exercise, limited his synergy with the unit.

Peter knew each person’s capabilities, but having never led them in an exercise was fatal for real combat command.

Faru had discussed this issue with Gao Yang before.

It seemed like Marshall didn’t want the Russians to get too involved with the unit he built.

In fact, Peter couldn’t participate in any real combat with the special forces squad at all.

The actual command of the special forces squad was in the hands of squad leaders like Alcohol and his peers.

Gao Yang had no intention of interfering with the specific commands of the squads, as Alcohol and the others were veterans who knew what to do; they all had the capability to lead a squad in combat.

After Alcohol gave his orders, he immediately charged out, with the current intense suppressive fire, his approach to Aimer was not under too much threat.

Gao Yang felt Alcohol’s move was somewhat inappropriate.

After being a mercenary for so long, the influence on combat style was too strong.

The task of bringing Aimer and other casualties back could have been entirely accomplished by Aimer’s own team members.

However, as a mercenary, one trusts their own comrades the most, and upon seeing a brother injured, the first thought is to personally rescue them.
