Chapter 321: The Night Court

Aldric let out a long breath, relieved that he was able to tell her the history of his kind while Islinda was befuddled, stunned by the information. However, it was still incomplete and she was quick to question, "Is that all?"

"Of course not, princess. We are just getting started. So far we’ve established that the Unseelie Faerie are referred to as the evil or dark Fae while the Seelie Faerie are goodness personified or the good ones as told in human stories. The four courts are the summer court, winter court, spring court, and autumn court. However, that’s not all. " He revealed to her with anticipation, heightening the climax of the story.

Islinda looked at him in surprise,

"There’s more?"

"Indeed, there are more. To be precise, they are minor courts that are hardly recognized. The Unseelie is made up of the Winter Court, Autumn Court, Night Court, dawn, day, and dusk court while the righteous Faerie, the Seelie is made up of the Summer and spring court. One thing to notice among the minor courts is that they were closely related with similar features and cultures, but their abilities differed. But everything that went wrong started with the Night court.

"The Night court and the dusk court Faerie were the most similar. However, the dusk court was primarily active during transitional periods of dawn and dusk. While the Night Court is active during the night, embracing the darkness and shadows. The night court Faeries govern the night and all that happens during that time. Their leader is the High Lord of the Night Court, a powerful faerie ruler who oversees all of their activities.

"The Faeries from the minor courts were not exactly as powerful as their counterparts from the bigger courts. The Night court was associated with the moon and darkness. Their powers and magic are often related to the power of the night. Night Court Faeries were Dreamweavers, influencing dreams, secrets, and the hidden aspects of the fae world. Unfortunately, the role was not enough for them.

"Their High Lord wanted to be stronger, he desired his court to get much recognition as the bigger Faerie Courts. So he sought ways to make that possible, even if it required going the wrong way. He didn’t care, all he wanted was power. Immense power. So he went down the dark side by going to the demons. Unfortunately, demons were bigger tricksters than the Fae.

"The Night court high lord wanted to be on par with the major courts and demanded the demons make them stronger, which was not exactly hard to do, considering the night court Faeries more aligned with darker aspects of fae magic. No demon could resist such a tantalizing offer and requested a sacrifice. About twenty Night court Fae children were sacrificed to receive the sovereign power he requested.... "

Islinda gasped in horror when she heard about the ritual. She always had a soft spot for children and to think one would sacrifice his own people for his selfish purpose made her stomach turn. The Night Court High Lord was truly a monster.

Eli continued, " Of course, the High Lord was not alone, he and his accomplice got what they wanted, but never did they imagine they would come to be exclusively known as Dark Faeries, members of the Fae who can be at best described as free-spirited and at worst pure evil. The thing about being the best at brokering deals is that it blinds you with confidence you don’t realize your vulnerability.

"They asked for power and received it, however, when the source is corrupted, what else do you expect? Their abilities were heightened and the night court Faeries became skilled in the art of manipulation, both in terms of influencing others’ thoughts and emotions and in deceiving or tricking people for their own gain. Some could read minds and communicate telepathically with others. The power allowed them to extract information or control the thoughts of their victims.

"Most of them possessed a captivating and enchanting aura, able to mesmerize or charm others with their presence. Able to manipulate emotions and sway people to their will. The others could change their physical appearance, either taking on different forms or altering their features. This power lets them masquerade as someone else or blend into their surroundings.

"However, the rarest power was curses and Hexes and the most dreaded necromancy. The night court blessed with the first ability possessed the ability to cast curses or hexes on individuals, bringing misfortune, bad luck, or physical ailments to their victims. While the necromancers have a connection to death and possess the ability to communicate with or control spirits, or even raise the dead to do their bidding.

"All in all, the minor Night Court suddenly became powerful and this change did not go unnoticed by the other courts who then perceived them as threats. Their power was unnatural and destructive. It went against the law of nature and created an imbalance especially if other courts followed their paths.

"They were told to give up the power, but the thing about Supreme power was that it was addictive. Rather than give it up, they craved more. Not to mention that it was in a Fae’s blood to want to be powerful. It was in their nature to rule and they couldn’t change their nature. The Night Court faeries gifted with the power had been at the bottom of the hierarchy and couldn’t give up, nor did they recognize the evil chipping away at their souls.

"The war began and it raged on for centuries. While the other courts mostly fought against them in order to maintain balance in the realm, it turned out that there was another reason to do so. The power inside of the Night Court Faeries drove them mad, till all they were capable of was chaos. There was no longer the concept of good and bad, all they desired was to win and dominate. Thus, they become the necessary evil that needs to be purged away. "
