Chapter 1059: Chapter 711: The 3rd Phone Call (1)
Hearing Mu Lin’s words, several people exchanged glances, and someone had already instinctively stood up.
Mu Lin did not pay attention to them and calmly continued with her breakfast, waiting for the arrival of her grandfather or his instructions.
In fact, the reason Mu Lin stayed here last night and had not left yet included concern for the injury sustained by the old Mr. Xue and, to a lesser extent, as a precaution against those who might come back for more trouble.
Although the chance of this was only a few percent.
In reality, protection had already been temporarily arranged on the evening of the incident, but other matters still needed to be settled. Besides rescuing people, some things did not require Mu Lin’s participation.
After breakfast, Mu Lin went upstairs and instructed Xue Wenjie to rearrange the old man’s room, after all, it was not good for him to stay in a room that had been destroyed.
However, it was because of such a minor matter, at least to Mu Lin, that someone unexpectedly came looking for trouble.
"So, what do you mean?" Mu Lin leaned on the sofa, her icy eyes faintly observing the finely adorned lady standing before her, her eyebrows slightly furrowed.
Or perhaps Mu Lin was still a bit dazed and hadn’t come to her senses.
Suppressing a slight yawn, Mu Lin lazily gazed at the woman who had disrupted her peaceful sleep.
"I’m asking you, if you don’t agree with us accompanying our father, why are you making such a fuss over him?" the woman had been dissatisfied with Mu Lin since last night; from her childhood until now, no one had ever dared to humiliate her like this.
Normally she wouldn’t dare to trouble Mu Lin, but how could she not make good use of such a perfect excuse that had been presented to her?
The woman believed that if they couldn’t even go upstairs to see their father, then Mu Lin’s grand ordering of Xue Wenjie to move Mr. Xue was certainly even more objectionable.
If something happened to their father, who would be responsible?
Furthermore, the woman was utterly convinced that Mu Lin had been targeting her since last night; such an unforgivable grievance.
Although Mu Lin’s status was not to be offended, did her own status not compare to Mu Lin’s? What a joke!
"Alright, Qiaofei, I think Divine Doctor Mu Lin has her own reasons for this matter," a man standing behind the woman intervened, seemingly the husband or a relative of hers.
Even though the man did not fully agree with Mu Lin’s decisions, this was the Xue Family’s home, and in the event of the patriarch’s incident, the person in charge was Xue Wenjie. Since even Xue Wenjie was following the orders of the young girl before them, what could they do?
It was best not to stir up trouble.
The Xue Family was a large clan, with the old Mr. Xue having two sons and two daughters; Xue Wenjie had recently been summoned back by the patriarch, while the second son was still out of town. Unlike Xue Wenjie, who had pursued a military career, Xue Wenzheng was a businessman who usually did not reside in B City, and therefore was absent at the moment; Xue Wenjie had not yet had the chance to notify him.
Hence, the ones who were reluctant to leave the room last night were only the patriarch’s two daughters, their husbands, and their children.
Because Xue Wenjie rarely got the opportunity to return home and it was a rare family reunion at the Xue residence, they certainly did not expect such an incident to occur that evening; everything seemed so coincidental.
As for the person challenging Mu Lin, she was the eldest daughter of the old Mr. Xue, named Xue Qiaofei; it was understandable for children to wish to stay at their ailing father’s bedside, but if their motives were otherwise, that would be much less admirable.
That evening, Mu Lin had seen through the woman’s motives at a glance. Against such people, Mu Lin typically chose to ignore them, as this was a common problem in major families. Unfortunately, she had interfered with Mu Lin’s plans last night.
For such persons, it was of course good if Mr. Xue was well, but if something serious happened, or if he had a brief rally before death, they would certainly want to be there to show their faces. As daughters who had married out of the family, they naturally expected to inherit a considerable portion of the estate; hence, whenever Mr. Xue had any problems, certain individuals would always be the first to rush back home to show their filial piety.
Although Qiaofei’s husband came from a respectable family in B City, it was unfortunate that an average family could hardly sustain her extravagant ways.
This flaw of hers was also what the old Mr. Xue found most distasteful.
Lofty as the sky, before she married, she had nearly scrutinized every scion of the families in B City; yet in the end, nobody knew why she married a man from a family that was, compared to the Xue Family, quite ordinary. That was the man behind her, looking honest and sincere.
Of course, that was only on the surface; Mu Lin could see the desire in that man’s eyes, the covetous desire for power.
If the woman before him had not possessed the identity of the Xue Family’s young mistress, he suspected the man wouldn’t have given her a second glance.
After all, men are—vain creatures; who likes to be outdone by a pampered woman?
"So what?" Mu Lin casually glanced at the man before resting her gaze on the woman, "Are you trying to educate me on how I should behave?" The curve of her lips was mocking, not quite a smile. Looking at Mu Lin like this, Xue Qiaofei clenched her teeth, yet there was a trace of fear in her heart, mixed with a touch of strangeness.
The woman before her was clearly smiling, but she found those eyes reminiscent of the way her father looked when he lectured her, causing palpitations.
She disliked Mu Lin, and even more, she detested her father’s constant praise of her, especially after Mu Lin had put her in an awkward position; the disdain in her heart grew stronger. Her family, the Xue’s, surely were no less than the Jing Family’s daughter-in-law!
Of course, to Mu Lin, this really made no difference.
Taking a deep breath, Xue Qiaofei looked at Mu Lin with raised eyebrows, "I just want an explanation from you..." Yet before she could finish, Mu Lin cut her off, "Why do I owe you that?" Mu Lin’s lips curled with a smile that wasn’t really a smile, "Is it because you’re Elder Xue’s daughter, or is it because you’re the inheritor of the future wealth of the Xue Family?"
Mu Lin’s smile was mild and languid, but her expression became puzzled the next moment as if perplexed, "That’s wrong, though, I recall the Xue Family isn’t quite up to you calling the shots yet."
She wants an explanation from me? Well, it’s unfortunate, but giving explanations is what I like least.
"You!" The woman was grinding her teeth, her sense of reason likely gone. The man behind her quickly pulled her back, and the wife of Xue Wenjie immediately stepped in front of her, saying, "Qiaofei, now is not the time to discuss this. And I believe that if Divine Doctor Mu made such arrangements, there must be a good reason."
"Let’s not forget, it was Divine Doctor Mu who snatched our father back from the jaws of death." The woman reminded with a voice that couldn’t help but rise; previously, Doctor had said that there was nothing he could do for the old man’s injuries. If not for Mu Lin, their father might already be... Hence, no one in the Xue Family had the right to question Mu Lin.
Looking at the person standing in her way, Xue Qiaofei shot her a ferocious glare and glared at Mu Lin too before storming off to sit as far away from Mu Lin as possible.
She knew, she really shouldn’t offend Mu Lin at this time, but she just couldn’t stand her superior air.
Mu Lin thought to herself, when had she ever acted superior? Her demeanor the evening before had already been—politely speaking—quite courteous towards those who interfered with her treatment.
The woman turned and looked at Mu Lin, offering a smile of apology, "Qiaofei has always been quite frank, and sometimes her words aren’t very pleasant, I hope Divine Doctor Mu won’t take it to heart."
Mu Lin gave a faint nod, turned slightly to the side, and closed her eyes to rest.
She couldn’t be bothered to care.
About all that messy stuff, she would stay out of it, but if it came to bother her, then they shouldn’t blame her for making them regret being born.
Actually, Mu Lin felt that she was already quite patient.
She intended to close her eyes and rest a bit, but no more than ten minutes passed before her phone began to ring one call after another.
The first caller was Zhan Zhong, primarily to enquire about Elder Xue’s condition. Hearing from Mu Lin that he was past the critical stage, he immediately sighed with relief.
Then came Jing Chen, who was still busy. His call was mainly to inform Mu Lin that everything was taken care of and to instruct her to stay at home until the matter was settled.
With Mu Lin there, he felt relieved.
And the last call... looking at the note on her phone, Mu Lin’s aura chilled that moment, brimming with a murderous intent.
"I really didn’t expect you to call me at this time."
