Chapter 1004: Chapter 670: News (First Update)

Even in the evening, the people inside still couldn’t sleep soundly. The moment Mu Lin and Jing Chen set foot inside, everyone had already awakened, watching the two with wary eyes, yet their bodies couldn’t help but retreat backward.

Fear instantly filled the entire cramped cage; some women almost went mad with terror. Upon seeing Mu Lin and Jing Chen, what repeated in their minds were just four words.

"Don’t kill me, don’t kill me."

Or another phrase: "I don’t want to die; I don’t want to be treated as an experiment."

Staying in such a place can easily shatter one’s mind because you simply don’t know if the next person selected for experimentation will be you.

They had lost count of how many times they had watched people taken away from their side, never to return.

Letting go of Jing Chen, Mu Lin stepped forward, looking at the middle-aged man in front of him who watched cautiously yet without fear in his eyes, and asked, "How long have you been locked up here?"

Upon hearing Mu Lin’s words, the man was startled, looking at Mu Lin incredulously, "You’re from China."

It was possibly unexpected to encounter another Chinese person outside these cages.

Mu Lin nodded, "Doesn’t it look like that?" He curled his lip, "In my experience, people from R Country usually aren’t very remarkable-looking." It was hard to find a good-looking one among the bunch.

"So, are you in cahoots with them?" The man looked at Mu Lin with suspicion. After all, no one else had ever appeared in this place, and being able to appear here without obstruction must mean some connection to those people.

What did they want to do this time?

"Do we look like accomplices to you?" Jing Chen’s voice rose from behind Mu Lin; the man in front surmised that if he dared answer yes, he might be instantly reduced.

The middle-aged man shook his head, "Honestly, not at all." But this place was a research facility, where nothing was impossible! However, the aura of this man and woman gave him a sense of familiarity, like that of... "You’re soldiers, right, soldiers from China?" He spoke with a hint of inquiry.

Mu Lin didn’t feel much; however, Jing Chen, this man gave him the impression of a natural-born soldier. He stood there calmly, his presence impossible to ignore, yet normally, he concealed his aura so well that one couldn’t sense him, much like Jing Chen before he had spoken.

Only China’s Special Forces could achieve such a feat!

Hope flickered in the man’s eyes.

Mu Lin raised his eyebrows, "Oh, that’s quite an insightful look you’ve got." It was impressive he could tell. He glanced back at Jing Chen, who had once again become as inconspicuous as any other passerby.

Hearing Mu Lin’s words, the man chuckled subconsciously, "Actually, over twenty years ago, I also served as a soldier for three years." It had been over twenty years, and he had almost forgotten that feeling. Now, he was just an ordinary person, otherwise, how could he have ended up here, at the mercy of others.

"You’re here to save us, right?" As the middle-aged man uttered these words, over a dozen people behind him immediately fixed their eyes on Mu Lin and Jing Chen with fear in their gaze, now filled with intense hope.

A Chinese soldier’s presence in such a place could only mean rescue, as far as he could imagine.

Though the couple before him felt more like they were strolling through an ordinary supermarket.

"You could say that," Mu Lin replied, and at his words, those huddled in the corners suddenly rushed forward, nearly startling Mu Lin.

"Are you really here to save us? Please, save us, we can’t stay here any longer." They truly couldn’t endure another day.

"Please, save us..."

"Please, we beg you..." Countless pleas swarmed in, creating such a racket that Mu Lin felt overwhelmed, and to get closer to them, the dozen or so people started to argue and shove each other.

In such circumstances, people are selfish.

The chaos before her was like countless ducks quacking incessantly in her ears. Watching a woman on the floor being stepped on, curling up to protect her head, Mu Lin’s expression turned icy in an instant, "Everyone shut up, or I’ll deal with you first."

The indifferent expression, the icy gaze, and the oppressive aura exuding from Mu Lin caused the person before them to immediately shut up, their face even showing fear.

Mu Lin seemed dangerous to them.

But Mu Lin and Jing Chen were their only hope. If they didn’t seize this opportunity now, they would truly be left in despair.

They kept their mouths tightly shut, their hands covering their lips, not daring to make a sound for fear of provoking Mu Lin again.

Mu Lin’s eyes coldly swept towards a man beside the middle-aged man, and her clear, emotionless voice rose, "You, go help her up."

A sneer rose in her heart. Indeed, in matters of life and death, everyone is selfish. This was one of the reasons why Mu Lin had been reluctant to get too close to others in the beginning, settling accounts clearly after every deal, yet she never expected that later on, her life would be filled with so many variables, leading to her becoming the person she was now.

Of course, she couldn’t deny that there were still many simple people around her.

That said, even though Mu Lin had become more compassionate, Mu Lin was still Mu Lin. Her fundamental nature wouldn’t change.

Hearing Mu Lin’s words, the man hurriedly helped the woman off the ground. The people around did not dare to make any rash moves, to avoid offending Mu Lin.

Mu Lin walked up to the man, her gaze sweeping slightly; promptly, he moved aside with a dejected look. Mu Lin looked at the girl, "Stretch out your hand to me," she said indifferently.

The girl looked at Mu Lin with some gratitude and extended her hand, though she didn’t know what Mu Lin intended to do.

Mu Lin frowned, "The other one." She wanted the one that wasn’t injured.

Seeing Mu Lin’s cold face, the girl hastily extended her hand, wincing in pain.

Just now, it seemed her arm had been hurt in a fall, and then it had been stepped on several times; now it was excruciatingly painful.

Mu Lin reached out, pulling the girl’s hand outside the fence. Confused onlookers heard two "clicks", the girl winced in pain. The next moment, she carefully pulled her hand back, only to find it seemed fine now.

"Thank you." Her eyes were filled with gratitude as she looked at Mu Lin; perhaps she was actually a cold person with a warm heart.

With a snort, Mu Lin looked at them, "I warn you, if you continue to make noise and wake those people up, then don’t blame us for not saving you when you die." Her mouth curved into a mocking smile as she threatened.

Everyone immediately pressed their lips together. Some had thought to say that they were there to rescue them, after all, but thinking better of it, they swallowed their words.

She looked at them with detachment.

"I happen to have little patience. So, don’t provoke me, or the consequences will be more than you’d want to bear," Mu Lin warned unapologetically, otherwise these people, if they carelessly caused trouble, it would still end up being their problem.

And another thing... everyone was sleeping so soundly; how could they be so "heartless" to wake them up? At the very least, they should wait until she was done!

Standing behind Mu Lin, Jing Chen’s gaze finally regained its calmness, watching her with tender eyes, he simply stood there quietly, then turned his attention towards the surroundings.

Mu Lin looked at the middle-aged man and asked, "Tell me, has a child, about five or six years old, been here?" About the same age as their precious one at home.

"Yes," the girl answered quickly, spilling everything she knew, "About a month ago, there was indeed a child here, kept with us from the beginning." The child kept crying, annoying many of the people here. Some even cursed the child, but then...

"Where is the child now?" Indeed, the child had been here.

The girl shook her head, "The child was kept with us for about half a month before being taken away. We haven’t seen him since." Maybe he was dead.

On hearing this, Mu Lin’s brow furrowed deeply.

Could it be that he had really been discarded in the pile of chaotic graves behind the mountain?
