Chapter 84: Chapter 84 Opportunity Comes
The increasingly polite knocking came from ahead, and Feng Xue elegantly rose to her feet, casually tossing the blanket on her bed and glancing at the lunch brought by her secretary. Yet, she noticed a slightly odd expression on the secretary’s face.
Without waiting for her to ponder this, the secretary said in "Phonetic Yan Language":
"Today, holiday, you rest, for a while, continue tomorrow."
"Oh?" Feng Xue heard this sentence and deliberately showed a somewhat surprised expression, but still nodded and began to eat her meal.
Undoubtedly, Jeston was not the type of boss who would voluntarily give his employees a holiday. In other words, the only reason he did not let her work on manufacturing Magic Items today was that he must have encountered trouble.
And this trouble was most likely related to the Magic Items.
"Is it those forces trying to get a piece of me that have acted?" Feeling the feedback that had swelled to about twenty portions and then ceased, Feng Xue silently thought.
She didn’t believe that in all of Columbia, only twenty people were qualified to seize benefits from Jeston. The only possible explanation was that those who had received the news had intercepted it, confining the news of Jeston’s mass production of Magic Items within a small circle.
However, those capable of such actions would also have anticipated that others might have received the news too; Jeston, in the coming days, probably would not have the opportunity to pull her into manufacturing Magic Items.
Thinking of this, a slight joy finally surged in Feng Xue’s heart; the final piece of the puzzle was about to be completed!
...
"Knock, knock, knock..."
"Come in." Along with a professional voice, a Prison Guard entered the office, looking at the man busy with documents. The Prison Guard said directly:
"Mr. Smirt, the prisoner you asked to be closely watched has been whispering non-stop since a while ago."
"Oh?" Smirt immediately put down his documents and stood up, asking:
"Do you know what he is saying?"
"I don’t know; the voice is very low, only some syllables can be heard. But we can’t understand their language anyway." The Prison Guard shook his head, adding:
"You told the boss not to let anyone contact them, so I didn’t dare ask."
"I see, I’ll go over now." The secretary picked up her smartphone; currently, the boss was arguing with Mr. Loken, so she had to go herself.
Smirt’s office was not too far from the Prison, but with some hurrying, she also arrived in front of the heavy iron door within ten minutes.
Even though the heavy iron door had not yet opened, Smirt could already hear a succession of ghastly wails from behind it. Although she could not understand exactly what was being said, the voice was undoubtedly filled with madness, pain, and resentment.
The Prison Guard opened the iron door, and the volume of the sound suddenly increased several notches, apparently concerned that Mr. Secretary might misunderstand their management abilities, so he still opened his mouth to explain:
"From the day these guys arrived, there would be occasional screams, initially just one or two. But starting from this morning, the number of those screaming increased, and from this afternoon, they haven’t even stopped."
Smirt wasn’t very surprised by this situation. Being a direct subordinate of Jeston, he was somewhat privy to some information about the "ghosts," including that they would disappear after being imprisoned for a while. He also knew that almost every ghost, before disappearing, would enter a state of hysterical madness; he had heard such things before when delivering meals to Feng Xue, just not as exaggerated as now.
Compared to this meaningless noise, he was only concerned about what exactly the gentleman capable of producing Magic Items was muttering.
But as he approached Feng Xue’s cell, he found the situation was not as he had imagined.
At this moment, Feng Xue looked no different from usual, wrapped in a blanket and sitting on the bed, knees to chest, with a dictionary resting on her lap. However, unlike usual, today he seemed not to be copying word cards.
Yet Feng Xue’s chanting was neither hysterically nor full of resentment. It also did not seem like he was preparing to cast a spell and reciting the preliminary spell.
He just held the Yan-Victoria dictionary, emitting a sound that was not too loud but also not quiet amidst the noisy surroundings, making it hard to hear clearly.
In such a rabid, piercing shrieking environment, Feng Xue’s serenity and leisureliness seemed starkly out of place, like a philosopher mixed among thugs.
"Knock, knock, knock." Under the curious atmosphere created by Feng Xue, Smirt also lightened his movements, tapping gently on the bars, producing a sound soft but at least audible in the noisy environment. After several knocks, Feng Xue finally looked up.
Upon noticing Smirt, he stopped his chanting, leisurely picked up the chain of his shackles, and placed his leg along with the shackle beside the bed. Because of the shackles, he did not wear the high-end leather shoes that came with yesterday’s clothing, but instead wore the prison shoes that came with his prison uniform, making his already wrinkled suit look even more bizarre.
"Is, there, anything?" Still using the fragmented, grammarless form of communication, the secretary nevertheless noticed that the other’s pronunciation seemed a bit more accurate. However, he temporarily set aside this question and went straight to the point of his visit:
"What were you saying in the corner before?"
Feng Xue’s response, however, was unexpected yet seemed reasonable—
"I, am, learning, Victoria language."
At this, Feng Xue turned around, picked up the dictionary that was on the table, pointed to the grammar page in the appendix and then flipped through a few pages randomly, pointing to the phonetics beside the words:
"Phonetics, I understand a bit."
"I see." Smirt looked behind Feng Xue into the cell, not noticing anything unusual, and thus stopped being overly suspicious. As for inspecting, he could do so later when he went to manufacture Magic Items; there was no need to go in and search now, as that was risky and likely to cause dissatisfaction.
Not to mention, although the boss was not very smart, he was a bit suspicious after all, and interacting with him today using translation software was a bit over the line. Further contact might stir up suspicion, which ultimately would not be good.
Having realized this, the secretary no longer spoke much, just nodded her head and said through the translation software:
"If that’s the case, then I will take my leave now, if you have any instructions, let the Prison Guard find me."
...
Watching the secretary leave, Feng Xue dragged her heavy shackles back to the bed, continuing to mutter leaning against the wall.
However, unbeknownst to anyone, during the intervals of his recitation of Victoria language, some unrecognizable syllables would suddenly pop up, and at the junction between his bed and the wall, there was a tiny recess...
