Chapter 63: Chapter 63: The Wise Will Never Diminish
Feng Xue had quickly proved that smart people were always in abundance; shortly after she erected her shelter, new opportunists began to arrive in droves near the garbage land, and their numbers were anything but small.
However, it made sense—the destruction of the landfill area was marked on the map on the work badge, meaning anyone with a work badge living nearby could quickly learn about the obliteration of this particular landfill area.
While most people tend to be conservative, the world is never short of adventurers. Feng Xue’s early arrival was simply because she was already on her way when the landfill area collapsed.
Although the wilderness of Infinite City represented danger, having scouting or Concealment tags meant that it wasn’t difficult to detect and avoid instinct-driven omens in advance.
Unless it was facing opponents completely beyond her power, like the previous giant encounter, moving just outside of the city was not very challenging in reality.
Of course, Feng Xue was saying this now. Twenty days earlier, she wouldn’t have had the confidence to say such things.
Moreover, since the outer wall of this landfill area was gone, it could potentially be discovered by passing omens at any time. Those who dared to arrive at such a time must possess some kind of Absolute Skill.
However, these people seemed to understand this. They didn’t start fighting upon seeing others but instead picked spots and began to build their own temporary living arrangements, a behavior that struck Feng Xue as very strange.
She had erected a shelter only because she had crossed worlds not long ago and still had the living habits of a human. Yet, these people didn’t seem the type to build anything that would obstruct their view for the sake of a little comfort.
Indeed, as Feng Xue had expected, while every new arrival built a house, not a single one actually lived in it, which made their actions increasingly bizarre—
They weren’t satisfied with just constructing one house; upon finishing one, they immediately started another, and though these haphazard stone and mud structures barely qualified as pigsties, they tirelessly repeated the process.
It was almost like they were preparing for some kind of Ritual.
Feng Xue’s first reaction was to call Old Li for information, but she dismissed the thought as soon as it arose. Old Li knew she had found an "outsider," and inquiring about the landfill destruction now would make it easy to pinpoint her location. As the saying goes, one must always be wary. If possible, Feng Xue never wanted to meet Old Li again.
Since nobody was actually living inside the houses, Feng Xue had no choice but to endure the cold wind outside, despite having a shelter. Luckily, she still had a cardboard box that offered a smidgen of nonexistent warmth and a sense of safety.
This situation lasted for three long days, during which Feng Xue worked alongside these people, muddling through as a bricklayer, even beginning to wonder if they were trying to earn a "bricklayer" tag by doing all this. Then, Junk Day arrived.
Thick, dark clouds gathered in the sky, accompanied by bursts of thunder, signaling the familiar black vortex she had seen several times before.
Only this time, without the dome of the landfill to protect them, the huge commotion inevitably startled the surrounding omens. Among them were the somewhat normal-looking Fire Dragons and big-mouthed birds, as well as grotesquely twisted, weird figures composed entirely of rotten flesh.
But regardless of their appearance, those omens with the power of flight, just like moths to a flame, all swarmed towards that massive vortex in the sky, as if it contained some Secret Treasure that could compel all creatures to submission.
Just when Feng Xue began to doubt whether the black hole was indeed the passage to the Otherworld she initially thought it was, half of a Giant Dragon Corpse plummeted from the sky; it was the one that had been flying at the front.
Its body had been neatly sliced in half; the cut was as smooth as a Bright Mirror, and Feng Xue doubted that even the Mana-infused Holy Mother with 3 buffs could achieve such a clean cut.
Instead of being cut, it was as if it had simply vanished.
This thought crossed Feng Xue’s mind, but faster than her thoughts was the rain-like falling of omen corpses—all missing parts of their bodies. At that moment, Feng Xue finally saw clearly that the disappearing parts were, unsurprisingly, those that had first made contact with the vortex.
Had the parts that entered the vortex vanished? Or were they disintegrated?
Such ideas arose in Feng Xue’s mind, yet she kept her eyes on the Scavengers around her; unlike her, a newbie, they clearly had anticipated this and showed not the slightest hint of panic. It wasn’t until after the flying omens had all fallen that some Scavengers began to ready their Weapons.
"Are they preparing for the possible appearance of ground omens? So, are these houses actually meant to be shelters?" Feng Xue speculated, only to quickly dismiss her own thought—if they were intended as shelters, there would be no need for hollow structures; walls or even maze-like configurations would be far more effective.
Regardless, Feng Xue quickly drew her Holy Mother, a dismemberment tool, and prepared for Combat, mimicking the more experienced individuals’ actions. At that moment, as expected, the rain of garbage composed of refuse from the World poured from the central black vortex in the clouds.
"Refrigerators, televisions, cars... They all seem rather old-fashioned, from a type of modern world?" Feng Xue couldn’t help but feel disappointed as she watched the "junk" plummet from the sky, unable to deduce anything special about the World linked to this landfill area.
However, such details were of little consequence. Unlike other Scavengers racing for True Objects or fantastical items, Feng Xue’s sole reason for staying was the cost-free nature of the garbage; in other words, she didn’t have to worry about affordability. Anything that caught her eye could be bundled up and taken home, especially with so few competitors!
Indeed, although there were now several hundred to eight hundred Scavengers around the landfill, it was a sparse crowd compared to the usual hundreds of thousands who showed up on a typical junk day. Even with an even distribution, each person could rummage through thousands of square meters of space without restriction.
"About time to move." Feng Xue watched as some were already impatiently heading towards the entrance. Taking her cardboard box, she also began to move slowly—
Aside from its Concealment properties, the box’s expanded space guaranteed a massive volume of nearly two cubic meters. Its nature as a fantastical object also made it incredibly durable, making it much more useful than most carts!
"I think I synthesized a bottle of Powerful glue for fantastical items before. Later on, I’ll see if I can find four wheels to stick on the box..."
