Master of Kaidan -
Chapter 62: The Shattered Landfill Area
Chapter 62: Chapter 62: The Shattered Landfill Area
Feng Xue, having successfully squeezed into a cardboard box, escaped the landfill that interacted with the worlds of Monopoly and Yu-Gi-Oh World and resumed her journey. With the "Identity" provided by Chen Xiyao, she no longer needed to use bricks to replenish her expended energy.
In fact, she was even feeling a bit inflated; during the days she provided food for Chen Xiyao, she had killed quite a few ominous creatures and even developed a sense of "these things really aren’t all that."
Even in the first few days, she entertained the idea: "Why not just fight against Kaidan in the wild normally and only enter the city to collect resources on trash day?"
Until, she encountered a horde of zombies.
To be exact, it was a group of minions led by a terrifying zombie giant which was over five meters tall just at the foot, causing the earth to quake with every step it took.
The giant’s body constantly dripped with putrid, corrupt blood mixed with decaying flesh; when that vile blood hit the ground, it would assimilate nearby Pseudo Artifacts, and within seconds, a ferocious and twisted zombie would emerge.
Like this, it led countless zombies on a constant march, shredding and devouring the weaker ominous creatures without any struggle along the way—even the Fire Dragons flying in the sky were knocked down by the smaller minions the zombie giant casually grabbed, turning them into sustenance for the advancing army.
Faced with such a monster, Feng Xue could only cower in her cardboard box, trembling, praying that the other wouldn’t flatten her with a stomp.
It wasn’t until that moment that Feng Xue profoundly realized that her strength was far from sufficient to live outside the landfill area.
The cardboard box was powerful, but it only served to lower her presence, and sometimes being ignored wasn’t necessarily safe; on the contrary, an insect with no presence on the ground could easily be crushed by an inadvertently falling foot.
Feng Xue watched the giant moving further away and the messy ground, relieved but also once again aware of her own weakness.
She glanced at the cardboard box beside her and suddenly had the thought of throwing the thing away.
Previously, because there were too many zombies, many gazes settled in her direction, rendering her completely immobile in the box; she could only silently wait for the disaster-like monster to pass.
But after pondering for a moment, she ultimately couldn’t bring herself to do it—flawed as it was, it really was quite effective.
With a residual fright, she glanced at the footprints on the ground that were over twenty meters long and pulled out her work badge to examine the map again, only to find that the map had actually updated in real time. A complex mood washed over Feng Xue as she noticed that her original destination, the landfill site, was now nothing but ruins.
At least on the map, the place that was marked as the landfill half an hour ago now had nothing left.
"That giant from just now, did it come from this landfill?" Feng Xue picked up the cardboard box and a strange feeling arose in her heart—
Could that giant be a real person who had died and transformed?
If Chen Xiyao were to die in Infinite City, would she also become such a creature?
Contemplating this, Feng Xue felt a chill and vigorously shook her head to cast those thoughts from her mind, then quickened her pace toward the ruins of the landfill area ahead.
Although it had turned into ruins, it didn’t mean it was without value; the potential legacy left by the deceased Manager might be secondary, but most importantly, there was a garbage dump there!
The dump was, after all, a special resource point for Infinite City, even if the landfill area was damaged, the dump should remain intact. Did this mean that it was a resource point that wouldn’t be scavenged by the Manager in advance?
After rushing for about fifteen minutes, following those huge footprints, Feng Xue arrived at the so-called ruins.
To call it ruins was almost a compliment; what Feng Xue really saw was nothing but a plain of white.
The iconic dome-like high walls had vanished along with the destruction of the landfill area, and the slum-like structures had collapsed as if plowed through.
Looking at the blood-stained scratch marks on the ground and the occasional chunks of flesh, Feng Xue could almost see the small zombies born from the tainted blood storming into the homes, dragging out the residents of the landfill area, and then ripping them to shreds.
Not staying here for long, Feng Xue headed towards the route to the residential area indicated on the map. Based on his experience, almost every gang in the landfill area would set up their base camp near the passage to control access to the residential district.
Although this could be the best opportunity to reach the residential district, Feng Xue did not go straight there because he wasn’t ready to face the current situation of the residential district.
In the end, it was a place that had been dominated by major forces for over a decade. Even if the Manager was not a Kaidan, the bi-monthly Trash Day was enough for them to accumulate substantial wealth and Powerful arms, and these vested interests obviously wouldn’t want too many people sharing the profits.
"If I could become the Manager of this landfill, I could try it. However, I don’t know how long it will take for this landfill to be rebuilt."
Feng Xue came to what used to be the Manager’s base camp, his expression slightly disappointed. This place could be said to be the most severely affected area in the entire landfill, with countless massive footprints layer upon layer turning tens of thousands of square meters into a massive pit. The exaggerated number of footprints made it look as if a giant had danced a tap dance here!
No, perhaps there really was one!
The image of a giant humanoid monster at least two hundred meters tall stomping its feet in a fit of rage suddenly appeared in Feng Xue’s mind, sending a shiver down his spine.
"It looks like my guess was correct after all." Feng Xue shook his head, mourning for the visitor who died in the Real World of Infinite City for a moment, then activated Golden Finger to scan the area which could be referred to as a "sandpit," hoping to find a couple of useful items.
But the result was disappointing. His scan revealed nothing but garbled data, not even a hint of anything useful.
"Has someone beaten me to it? Or... was it devoured by the omen?"
Feng Xue felt that the latter was more likely; after all, given the omen’s indiscriminate nature, not even a Pseudo Artifact could be guaranteed safe from consumption.
With that in mind, he decisively gave up on searching here any further and turned his gaze towards the heart of the landfill area—
The dump.
Today was not Trash Day, and the dump was in a state of complete closure. Perhaps instinctively sensing the Danger here, even the giant omen had not inflicted Destruction upon it.
So Feng Xue dragged his cardboard box, using its internal space expansion (which could probably accommodate two adults crouching), and continued picking through the usable materials from the surrounding rubble, setting up a makeshift shelter here.
Before the next Trash Day arrived, he planned to live here...
