Chapter 350: Chapter 350: Ghost Make Full Use
"I’m telling you, there absolutely had to be some sort of biochemical experiments going on in that casino, maybe it was even a live testing ground for some consortium’s research into anti-aging medicine. All those corpses were the failures of their research, why else would I keep going from young to old!" he exclaimed. "Look at the attitude of the police! This definitely involves some major corporate interests, do you understand?"
In the live-streaming video, Bert the streamer pointed emphatically at his previous casino visit and the autopsy footage, while the barrage of comments from viewers who thought he was just being stubborn filled the screen.
However, those accusing him of being stubborn did not dominate the conversation, as many viewers supported the streamer’s theories about biological research, radiation, and conspiracies. Of course, there were also those who dismissed it all as post-production special effects and labeled them "Mortal World Awakening."
This was not just because the video lacked any images of ghosts but also because various corporations were beginning to manipulate public opinion.
After all, a ghost that could extend life through gambling undoubtedly held more value than those ghosts discarded by the research facilities.
For the top tycoons behind the scenes, Dunn and Bert were obviously in cahoots, planning to profit by hyping up the concept of ghosts.
But they didn’t really care much about such things.
What truly mattered was whether ghosts actually existed.
Were they objectively real entities discovered by a small group looking to cash in?
Or were they merely a hoax, a concept hyped up to scam viewers and wealth?
If it was the latter, then the tycoons would naturally treat it as a guiding light, grabbing a piece of the action for themselves. If the subsequent profits were considerable, they would continue to invest and even snatch the project away or share some profits with the rival parties.
But if it was the former, then the problem was far more serious.
And all the current evidence, whether the ghost samples in the labs that made the researchers lose their hair, the increasing incidents of ghost attacks, or the intelligence brought back by their private armed forces, was enough to prove that ghosts really existed.
So, was this "life-gambling" also real?
Pondering what those bigwigs were thinking, Dunn Simoni pointed to the projection screen, and said gravely to the viewers watching the live stream:
"See? This is typical stubbornness. Why is he so stubborn? Because he thinks he’s well-educated, moves in high society, and has thus formed a belief that ’ghosts are unscientific,’ not knowing that existence itself is the rationale—thinking ghosts are unscientific is, in itself, disbelief in science."
"What is science? Science is ’an orderly system of knowledge based on testable explanations and predictions about formal, organizational aspects of objective things.’ Simply put, it’s a way of thinking that involves induction and summarization. Since ghosts exist, their study is naturally part of science. We should acknowledge their existence rather than crudely labeling it as ’unscientific’..."
Listening to Dunn criticize Bert for being unscientific, while heading towards Sector 33 of No Man’s Land, the live chat exploded with activity.
Glimpsing a few inflammatory and advisory comments, Dunn straightened his clothes earnestly and then stated solemnly:
"Ausikus is my employee and disciple. Although his failure is his own responsibility, for the reputation of Black Thorn Ghost Hunting Agency, I have still decided to take on this assignment."
With that, he stepped out of the elevator into what had looked opulent just a few days earlier, but now resembled a long-abandoned old city, Sector 33 No Man’s Land, already transmitted to the screens of the viewers by Phantom Drones.
However, what most concerned the viewers at this moment was that there seemed to be many more corpses in this lawless area.
"F**k! Weren’t there fewer of those pirated ghost hunting livestreams yesterday?"
"Must’ve been last night, look at them all geared up in tactical equipment, totally private militia."
"It could also be a security company, from their posture, they probably died while trying to escape. Did that gambler leave the casino?"
...
Various comments streamed across the screen. Dunn prodded the body on the ground with his cane, frowning as he spoke:
"Based on the current situation, it seems there have been too many interactions with that gambler ghost lately, causing some kind of stimulation. Although it’s unclear whether it was ’forced out’ or ’drawn out,’ the gambler ghost’s range of activity has now expanded to encompass the entire No Man’s Land."
"Streamer, any idea how far this ghost’s range extends?"
It had to be said, once someone became popular, a lot of things got simpler. Dunn hadn’t even used his secondary account and people were already asking the questions he wanted answers to.
"It’s simple, just as previously mentioned, the formation of ghosts can generally be described with ’cognition’ and ’obsession’—
"For someone with a strong obsession, it leads to an avenging spirit; for an item, a possessing spirit; for a place, an earth-bound spirit.
"While most appear after death, it’s not because only death can produce ghosts. Rather, it’s because obsessions become fixed at death, unchangeable. Conversely, if a person is stubborn enough, firm enough, they could continuously generate ghosts even without dying.
"Like this gambler ghost, it’s likely the result of one or a group of gamblers’ strong obsession, resentment, dissatisfaction, or other emotions coming together, hence it can be considered the earth-bound spirit of the casino, normally appearing only within the casino."
"But this ghost has left the casino now!"
"That’s exactly what I was getting to." Dunn maintained his persona of "seriously talking nonsense," stepped over the drained corpses, walked up to the front of the casino but didn’t enter. Instead, he controlled the drone to fly higher and captured the whole area of No Man’s Land—
"Ghosts inherently lack wisdom, only intelligence, much like a robotic vacuum cleaner operates based on specific logic.
"Normally, robotic vacuums only clean inside the house, but if for some reason they recognize the area outside the door as part of the cleaning zone, they will include that corridor in their cleaning range.
"The same logic applies to ghosts. Normally, this gambler ghost would only gamble with people inside the casino, but if someone who is gambling with him tries to escape, the place they run to also becomes part of the casino for the gambler ghost. In other words, if someone triggers the gambler ghost and escapes from No Man’s Land without finishing their game, then all of Isgray City could become the territory of the gambler ghost."
With that, Dunn suddenly closed his mouth, slowly turned around, and looked at the empty parking lot with a serious expression, stating gravely:
"Since you’re here, come on out."
As Dunn’s words fell, something seemed to trigger. From the void, a dice with tentacles, wrapped in ghostly shadows and sporting twenty-one eyes, began to take shape.
It gazed at Dunn with its largest eye. Though there was no sound, the audience seeing that eye understood the dice’s message—
"Let’s make a bet!"
