Master of Kaidan -
Chapter 290: Suffering Yayuka
Chapter 290: Chapter 290: Suffering Yayuka
In the midst of their humorous exchange, a disquieting noise emanated from the ceiling. Yayuka instinctively wanted to look up, but suddenly felt a chill around her neck and found herself immobilized, choked in a naked stranglehold by her own doppelganger.
"Don’t speak, just repeat what you want to say in your mind!"
The emotionless voice echoed in her ear, causing Yayuka to shiver involuntarily; however, she calmed down and repeated to herself internally,
"What’s going on?"
"There’s a Kaidan sprawled on the ceiling, not sure if it’s a Poisonous Insect Body or a Sky Vault Taster. But for you, they are all the same." Feng Xue’s inorganic voice conveyed a weird terror that made Yayuka shudder uncontrollably.
Nonetheless, she forced herself to stand composedly, slowly walked to the sofa, and leaned on it casually, her gaze sweeping over her head. Then, she caught sight of that eerie figure.
The figure was roughly human-shaped, wrapped only in tattered cloth. Its skin showcased a moldy bluish-black hue. With eyes as large as an adult’s fist, protruding from its sockets like huge mung beans, and its black pupils slightly trembling, just locking eyes with it for a moment sent a chill through her, almost compelling her to scream.
"Ah, the TV shows these days are getting worse and worse!" Yayuka murmured in a slightly mechanical tone, slowly shifting her gaze as if searching for the remote, yet loudly repeating in her mind,
"Can’t we kill it? Like how we killed that one-eyed monk during the day!"
"Are you stupid?" Feng Xue moved off Yayuka and sighed,
"These guys are clearly teaming up for a sweep. It was crowded at school during the day, and suddenly missing one wouldn’t be so easily traced back to you, but now you’re alone at home. If this thing checks things out and then disappears, do you think they will let any mistake be overlooked? Or do you want me to use the Durability Essence and fight hundreds or thousands of Kaidan? Are you misunderstanding your own digestive strength?"
"But that thing is really disgusting to look at!" Yayuka kept complaining inwardly while not forgetting to pick up the remote and start changing channels.
"Disgusting or not, in situations like this, we can only wait for it to leave by itself." Feng Xue sat carelessly next to Yayuka, watching the television together. Yayuka voiced her concern,
"Are you really not going to be seen?"
"Didn’t I tell you? My ability is ’unknowable.’ It’s not just humans; Kaidan can’t see me either."
Feng Xue’s words held true, but not because of any ability. Rather, he simply lacked any "visible" attribute at the moment.
Ultimately, the Poisonous Insect Body is merely a conscious bundle of Inner Strength. Rather than saying Yayuka saw him, it was more accurate to say she "felt" him.
It was like being able to mentally picture what one’s hand was doing even with closed eyes. The Poisonous Insect Body acted like an extension of the host’s limbs. Thus, the Feng Xue in Yayuka’s vision was more a figment formed in her mind. Their conversation was conducted directly through an exchange of thoughts, not through actual sound or vibration.
To see the Poisonous Insect Body, one needed to use the Qi Observation Skill or similar energy vision when it increased its density enough to interfere with reality. Otherwise, even entities possessing a Poisonous Insect Body couldn’t see each other’s body when not meddling with reality.
And like now, just maintaining a state that Yayuka could sense, if observed with the Qi Observation Skill, at most one would think that the Life Essence on Yayuka’s body was denser than usual.
"Is that so?" Yayuka didn’t doubt Feng Xue’s words, she simply tried her best to focus on the TV program, but Feng Xue could occasionally hear her wondering silently, "Has it left?"
"Not yet." Feng Xue looked at the monster clinging to the ceiling and leaned in closer. Logically, before becoming a Kaidan of Hundred Tales, they should all be "nothing," but so far, he had seen few Hundred Tales Kaidan that resembled humans, at best one could say they were "in a rudimentary human form."
"Is it because rituals like Midsummer Night’s Festival create flawed Kaidan, or is it that opting to become a non-human Kaidan results in this appearance?" Feng Xue scratched his head, recalling those stranger Kaidan he had faced when challenging the Babylon Tower, but he soon gave up on that thought, remembering that he wore filters at that time.
"If it’s the former, it’s still manageable, but if it’s the latter, careful selection of non-human Kaidan will be necessary from now on." Feng Xue noted this down in his Kaidan role-playing handbook (metaphor), and continued observing the bizarre creature.
"It hasn’t stretched out its tongue to lick the ceiling, so it probably isn’t a Sky Vault Taster, Essence Qi beetles should count as one of the stronger Bereaved Spirit types, even if not a cadre, it shouldn’t be assigned to this kind of menial work."
As Feng Xue analyzed the type of Kaidan, he slipped back into Yayuka’s body and began to channel her Life Essence, circulating it through specific meridian pathways.
"Gurururu..."
A stomach growl emanated from Yayuka’s flat abdomen once again, her expression turned a bit helpless, but she sighed, got up, grabbed a handful from a box of Calorie Mate on the coffee table, tore open a small packet and began to eat.
Time ticked away by the minute, and Yayuka had already eaten three meal replacement biscuits, yet the Kaidan on the ceiling showed no intent to leave. Meanwhile, Feng Xue was already secretly forming a small orb of light and tossing it at the ceiling monster.
The orb merged quietly into the Kaidan upon contact, the integration was unparalleled in its smoothness, but even with this precision, the chances of the Poisonous Insect Body hatching were slim.
After all, Kaidan are different from humans, whether it’s their protein-like bodies or the energy within them, all of it is encapsulated by "Identity." Compared to humans, whose subtle changes like losing a few strands of hair go unnoticed, Kaidan with a clear countdown of their life who can manage their "Identity" are eerily accurate like Scrooge tracking the number of Gold Coins in his vault. Moreover, the weaker they are, the more meticulously and ruthlessly they manage, pinpointing to the second decimal place if necessary.
Facing such a host, the Poisonous Insect Body would most likely be detected the moment it began to hatch.
However, an unhatched Poisonous Insect Body also had its uses, whether as a remote-controlled bomb or a locator system, it was excellent.
The only drawback...
Well, it might just be a bit expensive.
But...
"To overthrow the tyranny of Hundred Tales, we must endure making Yayuka suffer for now!"
