Chapter 239

The sound of feet echoing against the palace grounds could be heard from afar. Several people made their way along the palace halls, running as though their lives depended on it.

All had heard, that the king had made a new decree and more importantly, they were interested in knowing about it.

*Minutes earlier*

In one of the chambers in the palace, a man dressed in a loosed shirt and fitted trousers stood with a red scroll in his hands while his eyes remained fixed on it.

In front of him was Evans who had his back hunched a bit as he awaited the words from the man.

"My Lord?"

"Yes. I see. I would carry it out immediately."

"And the ring?" Evans questioned. "Right here with me." He peeled his gaze from the scroll and looked up at Evans. "However, there is something I need to clarify."

"Go on."

"Does his majesty wish to hold a ceremony or?"

"None. He just wants it done as soon as possible and for it to be read to his people," Evans explained.

"Okay. So shall it be." He closed the scroll and sighed. "Although, I would need to make a special request to his majesty. Where is he?"

"Still in the Queen’s chambers. Although within the hour, he should be back in his chambers."

"Got it. I shall wait for him and visit him in his chambers soon."

"Alright. I would confer your wishes to his majesty," Evans lowered his head and walked back, before exiting the chambers and leaving it to him.

Minutes later, he made his way as he had said to Vidor’s chambers to look for him. On getting there, he met Evans waiting on him outside.

"Evans."

"Lord Baron, I will announce you. Just a second." He smiled at the Lord and walked closer to Vidor’s door. "Your majesty, Lord Baron is here."

"Let him in."

"Yes, your majesty." He moved back and bowed his head slightly. "His majesty awaits."

"Thank you." The big doors pulled open, ushering Lord Baron in before closing up again.

Once inside the King’s chambers, he lowered his head and paid his respect. "Greetings, Your majesty."

"Baron." Vidor dropped the pen in his hand and rose to his feet. He did not say much and walked away from his desk to stand before his minister.

"I heard you had something to say before carrying out the order?"

"Yes. If I may, your majesty," he lowered his head, even more, when he felt the domineering imposing aura that accompanied Vidor.

"Rise and speak freely."

"Thank you, your grace." He lifted his head and straightened his back but kept his gaze lowered out of respect. "I got our decree and I would ask personally, do you wish to hold a ceremony?"

"No. Ceremonies would take time," Vidor responded with ease.

"I see." He narrowed his gaze at him but Vidor did not utter a word and walked off to his mini dining area. Picking up a cup, he poured wine into it and offered it to Baron.

"Come, drink with me and ease your worries."

"Thank you, your grace but I am okay. I must tend to your decree as soon as possible. I am afraid, I cannot accept this offer today." A small smile spread across Vidor’s lips and he shook his head.

"Your loss. This is one of the best-brewed wines." Baron smiled at him but his no remained no. "Fine, go ahead." He withdrew his hand and brought the cup to his lips. "I am all ears," he mentioned and took a sip of his wine.

"I believe for a decree like this, an occasion should be held to announce it to the people properly."

"I know but I am trying to reduce eyes from prying."

"If I am honest with you, the decree has already brought that unwanted attention, your majesty."

"So what do you propose?" Vidor asked and walked over to where he stood.

The stern gaze in his eyes told Baron he was not kidding one bit and wanted the beat and suitable arrangement while making it less stressful at the same time.

"You present the ring and also, it would not be a big ceremony. It would be before the people at the 17th hour of the day. Have your people gather, while we make a little preparation and you officially announce your decree," Baron advised.

He took a minute to ponder on the words of his minister and after some careful thinking, he knew it was for the best.

"The former had an elaborate ceremony that lasted days with drinking and partying. This time, I find it not good that it is not the same and more importantly, people would feel the value you place now is minimal."

"I understand your point of view. Fine then. As much as I wanted it to be a calm affair, I guess the palace would buzz a bit."

"Your majesty, this changes everything and confers on her a title that would give her more power. As much as it seems delicate, I believe there was a reason," Baron stated rather boldly.

"Yes. However, what do you think? Am I too rash with this decision?"

"No, your grace. It was either now or later. In the end, it was still going to happen. Whether you choose to delay it or not does change much. However, it is better if the position is not vacant else, greedy people would fight for it. I trust your decision."

"Well spoken. It is for this reason I had you placed in this position. You think outside the box and you always see the greater picture."

"You flatter me, your majesty," Lord Baron responded with a warm smile. "I am doing what is required of me, without being prejudiced. Also, it would pacify the heart and bitterness of the people in the long run. Considering not many were happy with your earlier decree."

"I see. In that case, have it your way." He brought his cup back o his lips and gulped all the wine in there. "To a brighter future, Baron."

"To a better, Etheria," Baron responded with a bow. "I shall take my leave." Vidor nodded his approval and watched as one of his loyal ministers left.

"Etheria." He let out an exasperated sigh and tsked.
