Chapter 44: Do Not Know What I Am
The moment Tristan entered the house, Aria ran up to him and said, Did she say anything? Why did she approach me?"
As Aria waited for answers to her question, she caught sight of Tristan’s burnt finger and immediately grabbed it. "Are you alright? How did you get burnt?"
Tristan gently removed his hand from her hold and said, "I’m fine; Layla, on the other hand..."
"What happened to her?"
Tristan looked at Aria as he said, "She was burnt to death."
"What? You burnt her?" Aria asked with a frown.
Tristan held her hand and led her to the couch. He made her to sit beside him and said, "Layla told me a little about herself. She was a wolf who was kidnapped by humans who referred to themselves as hunters. These hunters came infiltrated her pack and took them hostage. They were held at a lab where their venoms were extracted and several painful tests were done on them. According to Layla, she stayed in that place as their test subject until a person she referred to as Master saved her and the rest of the wolves who had been subjected to experiments."
Aria was shocked hearing that. "That’s terrible."
Tristan didn’t reply because he would be lying if he said he felt sympathy for Layla. Her story may be sad, but his heart has already been too hardened for it to start feeling things like pity.
"These masters saved them, and the witch by his side healed them."
"Hold on. Is it the same witch who killed Milton?"
"At first I thought it was Noelle, and even Layla said Noelle was their Master representative, but..."
"But what?"
"The moment Layla told me something she wasn’t supposed to say, her body was engulfed in flames."
"Noelle is a witch, so it is definitely her who has done that, but how did she even know that Layla has told you everything?"
"It isn’t Noelle." Tristan said firmly.
"What?"
Tristan showed his burnt finger to Aria and asked, "Do you know why it hasn’t healed yet?"
Aria shook her head. Even she was surprised that Tristan was still injured. She knew it takes only minutes and sometimes seconds for a werewolf injury to heal, but Tristan’s wound was still looking so fresh with no sign of healing.
"Layla and the rest of the wolves who were saved by this master must have been stamped with an ancient magic. A magic that makes them to kill themselves before they could say the truth, and if they do not have the opportunity to kill themselves, they end up burning to death. It’s a forbidden spell, and Noelle may be an Elder, but I am certain she isn’t capable of this. Noelle is just a forty-seven-year-old witch, but this spell that has been used on Layla and the ferals has no longer been in existence for centuries."
"But Layla told you everything before she was burned."
"Layla didn’t have a choice; she was hypnotized, and by the time she realized it, it was already too late."
"So, Layla is dead?" Aria asked again, as if confirming that she would no longer see the girl who shyly asked her to snap notes. Although it was all her act, still, s... still....a part of Aria felt responsible for the young girl’s death. How did things get to this point? When did she start getting involved in the murder of someone?
"You didn’t kill her." Tristan said. One would think that he was able to hear her thoughts, but the truth is, even though he and Aria had not spent years together, he could sometimes know what she was thinking through her eyes, and he was certain that a part of her was blaming herself for Layla’s death.
"But I feel so guilty. Perhaps after being locked in a lab for years, she truly wanted a friend, and if..."
"Layla wasn’t your friend. The Ferals aren’t your friend. They are too broken, and the only thing joining their broken pieces together is the witch beside the so-called master side. If Layla’s story is accurate, then I bet this master planned everything from the beginning."
"You think he was the one who sent the humans there?"
"I will have it investigated, but the extraction of their venoms sounds weird. Why do the humans want the venoms of a bunch of wolves? It doesn’t make sense."
Aria’s eyes widened in realization as she said, "Do you think that this master was the actual person behind their captivity, and when he had broken their mind and spirit, he came to them as a knight, giving his witch an easy access to their mind?"
Tristan smiled at Aria’s theory and said, "Yes, that is what I think. He has made them his puppet and has ensured that they will never betray him. Now, more than ever, I am actually curious to know who this master is."
"But what does he want with me?" That is the part Aria still doesn’t understand. Why are they after her? She doesn’t have strength or any werewolf skills; she doesn’t even have a wolf, so how could she possibly be of use to them?
Tristan knew he couldn’t tell her the truth, at least not yet. Even he still does not understand how Aria could be their key. Kia said Aria has powers, but even when sitting this close to her, he couldn’t feel any trace of power coming from her. It was best not to tell her anything for now.
"I do not know what they want with you, but I will find out." Tristan said, and a few seconds after saying that, his glowing eyes became back to their original color, making him see nothing but darkness.
"Do you want me to take you to the room?" Aria asked. Whenever Tristan’s eyes go back to not seeing anything, she always ends up feeling sad, and as if he could feel her emotions, he would always tell her that he was alright and he was already used to the darkness, but there are times when she feels as if he was referring to another kind of darkness.
Tristan shook his head and lay down on her lap, saying, "I want to stay like this instead."
Aria was surprised when he placed his head on her lap, but she let out a sigh and started stroking his hair gently.
Tristan closed his eyes, enjoying her touch, but Kia’s words started playing in his head. She said she was able to see what Aria was seeing, and according to her, Aria saw her past self and him together, but if that was true, why hadn’t she asked him anything about it?
"Tristan."
"Yes?"
Aria opened her mouth to say something, but she then said, "Never mind."
Tristan’s voice was laced with drowsiness as he asked, "What is it?" Aria’s gentle strokes through his hair were already weaving a spell of sleepiness around him.
Aria chuckled at his sleepy voice and said, "Let’s talk when you wake up."
Tristan didn’t say anything as he finally gave in to the sleep that was calling him as Aria gently massaged his hair. Unfortunately, he found himself back in a place he wished to never be.
Devin barged into his mother’s chamber and angrily asked, "What have you done?"
His mother, named Henrietta, first dismissed her maids who were attending to her before focusing her gaze on her son.
"What did your beloved mate say that I did this time?"
"You took away her wolf. How could you do this to her? How could you do this to me?" Devin asked, and when Henrietta noticed his watery eyes, she grimaced in disgust and said,.
"I did you a favor, and it’s funny how you think you could have a happy ending with that worthless Omega. Do you think you deserve it?"
"Why did you do it? Was it for her to hate me? Was it so hard to see me happy?"
"Why should you be happy when you have stolen away my happiness? I am this weak only because of you."
"Then you should never have had me! In fact, I am certain you would have gotten rid of me if I weren’t your last hope in forcing Dad to marry you. You were already going to become the Luna of such a strong pack, so why wasn’t that enough for you? You claim I’m a monster, but it is you who have turned me this way. Sometimes I feel like a werewolf, while other times, I do not know what I am."
Henrietta looked away as her son’s spoke and clenched her fist tightly.
Devin looked at his mother coldly and said, "I will never forgive you for this."
"You say it as if I need your forgiveness? You should be the one asking for my forgiveness instead. You should be down on your knees and pleading for me to forgive you for stealing my powers. Do you even know how many years it took for me to acquire those powers? All you just had to do was to be born, taking it all with you. You are my son, and since I am unhappy, it’s only right for a monster like you to be unhappy as well. That happy ending you think you are going to have, it will never happen, Devin, not as long as I’m alive."
